  1. Hi Jenn Might be worth posting on the Penge Tourist Board fb group as it has nearly 8000 members.

I suspect that was just a postal address - they probably spent all their time in Ramsgate, Dover, or some other part of Kent, where they were more likely to find allies. Nobody admitted to ever seeing them in SE20.
  3. My son went to St Olave's - we live in Penge - and boys travelled there from West Dulwich.

  5. A lot of former ED residents now live in Penge. It's well served for pubs and transport but could do with more choice on the restaurant front. A non-Italian/pizza/Indian option would make a killing.
  6. Alex pub's kitchen has been up and running for a while now and the food has proved very popular. Surprised that somebody took offence in the Nurseries. The owner and staff are amongst the nicest people I have ever met. I suspect it sells more coffee and cake than plants but is terrifically popular. I popped in on Sunday and the queue to be served was about 10 people long so I gave up.
  7. Note it's mainly a takeaway with a tiny seating area (10 people max). Lovely people run it and really great food but it's very small.
  8. I do live nearby. The conservation area with the 5 cute roads of cottages are there plus the almshouses. You've also got the Alex pub and Nurseries for beer/food and cake/coffee/plants on your doorstep. In general terms, everywhere that side of the High Street is good, the other side can be hot and miss.
  9. You lucked out, KidKruger. That's the best takeaway/restaurant in Penge imho

  11. The service from Penge East is pretty good compared to some lines. Not many cancellations, though there are often delays of a few minutes. The trains can get crowded though as more people have moved away from zones 1 and 2 but work centrally. Penge East is often the last station where you can still get a seat.

New bars opening including a brewery taproom, a thriving theatre and a vibrant street art scene.

The 4 an hour Southeastern service to Victoria is unlikely to be cut.

  15. My son went to St Olave's and we had a similar choice a few years ago. His best friend chose Wilson's. Both are exceptional so from an academic point of view there's little to choose between them. My son is a big football fan and St Olave's is a rugby school, which was a shame as he didn't get to play till the sixth form. Wilson's does have football throughout the years. It appeared that the homework piled on Wilson's boys was far greater than St Olave's and we always got the impression that at St Olave's they expect the boys to be very driven. Those that aren't, like my son, and just drift along didn't seem to be pushed as hard as I might have expected. My son is now 21 and came out with a very decent set of marks and has made many friends who he's kept in touch with. Bullying is pretty unheard of there. Ultimately the choice of school for us came down to the journey. We live in Penge. St Olave's is 20 mins by train then 15 mins walk from Orpington. The journey to Wilson's was longer and involved either a tram or train followed by a bus, then a 10 minute walk. Good luck with either.
  16. Penge has also got a taproom in the local brewery (Southeys). Open Fridays and Saturdays. Oh and the Alex pub is reopening in a couple of weeks or so, with craft beer and a restaurant. It needs less takeaways and more restaurants but even that has improved a tad with Chez Yves (French) and Serbet (Turkish) opening in the last few months.
  17. Otta Have you considered walking to Clock House? - 12 mins from there to Lewisham on train
  18. Hi bermygirl13, I'm the chair of the Penge Tourist Board, a local community group. We not only have the Facebook page, with nearly 5000 members, but also a Twitter page (2000 followers) and a website. We also organise socials - next one is for Halloween and a trick or treat trail down the High Street. I'm interested in your thoughts on a forum similar to this one. We don't cover that so are interested in publicising it should you create one.
  19. I'd take anything published on their site with a pinch of salt. Standing room only? Not enough chairs? Third were new? Third of what? Three? How was event advertised? As a BNP event with a set agenda? Or a specific event related to something of major interest to locals that an individual member had organised without any reference to BNP? The UKIP leadership election may throw up future opportunities for the BNP, if UKIP move away from dog whistle politics but till then BNP are nobodies.
  20. I live in Bromley borough but in Penge, one of the three Labour wards (the other two are also in its northern London corner - CP and Clock House). Bromley council is awful. The most Thatcherite council in London, it always cuts its costs so every year we see local community assets sold off and services cut. Meanwhile it buys properties outside the borough to earn money off their income which it then uses to buy more assets outside the borough... It has long forgotten what a council is for.

LK are no more and their previous pubs have been split between two new companies. A new brewer (Southey Brewing Co) have taken over the Penge site and include the former LK head brewer plus a couple of bars. LK are being rebranded and in theory are still interested in the Alex site, potentially as a basement location for their brewing ops. In reality that could take some time and also as Steve, LK's supremo, does not live in Penge any more, I'd imagine there's questions whether he can be bothered setting up a brewery there that he can't oversee regularly. As for South Norwood - I agree it looks the pick of the bunch for value. Croydon Council are offering free rents to some businesses to improve the shops and Antic are moving in.
  22. Southeastern are finally improving the night time service at the end of the month. Quarter hourly from Charing Cross to Ladywell until 11pm.

  24. My son went to Alexandra Infants many moons ago. Has been Outstanding for years. Plenty of excellent or outstanding infants and juniors now around Penge these days though.
  25. Yes. Quarter hourly all day till midnight instead of half hourly after 9pm.
