  1. Shop next to Moxons is going to be a cracking new pasta venue, same setup as on Redchurch st in Shoreditch.
  2. Hi, I need to erect some scaffolding in front of my mid terrace house to paint first floor windows. Anyone got an idea of what price to expect and who comes recommended? Many thanks, C
  3. RPS fireplace are the only ones to consider, had them in to our house to fit a refurbished fireplace. Very fair value and very professional.
  4. Hi, I've got a John Lewis fridge freezer that's leaking, checked the leak and can't figure it out. Can anyone recomend someone who repairs fridges etc? Cheers, C
  5. The Gardens is great however like many other surgeries, the receptionists can be pretty terse.
  6. I can't believe the response this post has got. If you're the only person that's burgled in a 20 mile radius, you'll still feel unsafe. Let's use this forum as an opportunity to talk about what to do about it and provide support not write in upper case and make people feel worse than they do already. Great post on CCTV and alarms, maybe get the police to review the safety of your home, they often do that for free and would be enough to put someone off.
  7. John did a great job on a burst pipe on my rental property, very prompt and was half the price of the agents's plumber! Keep up the great work John! C
  8. Interest rates are at a 300 year low for a reason, our economy and banks are f'd. Any rise in rates risks more defaults and more banks going under... Hence they'll doubtful be any rise in rates and hence no bubble burst. Over the next 5 years rates will have to rise slowly as economies become stronger again with a gentle fall in housing prices.it's a fact that house prices, even in London, have to eventuallly reflect average earnings, so they just have to fall, but not overnight. It's tough if your in the market to buy as there seems to be a demand gap between one bed flats and houses, so it's the 2nd rung on the ladder that's a real issue.
  9. Here here! I can't bare the crapness of products sold at the Co-Op and those flaming queues!
  10. I very much doubt that a majority of people will do their 'weekly' shop at M&S, the stores, range and price really aren't designed for that, these stores are aimed at top up shoppers. The ready meal and loaf of bread on the way back from the station etc.
  11. RESULT! Parking aside this is a massive asset to Lordship Lane and works well with existing retailers. M&S majors on convienience food, so will only really affect Co-Op and nearby Sainsbury's Local and Tesco Metro, not affecting Moxons and the like. Not only that but it will potentially boost footfall. This is very good news. BTW, assuming this is a Simply Food, the average basket size will be no more than a Co-Op shop so I wonder how much more parking will be required. Deliveries will be no more disruptive than the Co-Op,who often do there's late at night to avoid traffic and congestion.
  12. If you're on Vodafone, buy a Sure Signal box, it connects to b/band and boosts signal in your home. It's the only way to get good signal in London. From work with Vodafone, my understanding is that all telcos are at near max capacity in London. Each (small) mast can handle 20 calls at once and they often cover a small radius.
  13. A very healthy, although unfortunate, debate indeed. Worth making a distinction between inter gang related violence and violent mugging/assualt. Often an individual can commit both acts but yesterday seems to be the former? I'm a mancunian exile, in Moss Side / Whalley Range, it's all a similar story, while gangs jossle for control and respect it will always spill on to the streets. Yesterday was no big deal in the greater context but still disturbing for those of us who see ED as a safer Sarf London borough. Like in Moss Side, the met police let these guys fight between themselves, their gang heirachy will naturally sort itself out while the police focus on people higher up the chain who instigate the turf war. Unfortuantely the turf has got bigger and more visible (Barry Road / Lordship Lane). One big gangster arrest often sorts it out for a few years before it comes back again. Gooch gang leader arrested My personal view is that we're reaching a critical tension between a rise in gang violence and growing discontentment among the working/middle classes, when is the tipping point? Sorry But I have little pity for the boys that got stabbed, boys or not, they know what they're getting into... they've seen the stories and campaigns in newspapers and on TV.
  14. some useful comments here, especially the salad cream, what is that about? I assume no one French works there?! A few ideas: currently there's too much going on, no conistent style or theme e.g. chrome chairs, plastic ceiling (hence the refit I suppose!) take a leaf out of London's greatest food offering... Le Fromagerie off Marylebone High Street, wooden tables (a mix of communual and cafe style), stone floors, neutral / earthy paint, simplify/edit the menu (fewer and better). http://www.lafromagerie.co.uk/ Pick a theme and stick with it, if French choose rustic and simple, it's easier to do, tastes better (can be cheaper) and difficult to get wrong. Booze will never be an 'issue' if it has a food/cafe focus. I think Franklins has a good idea of theme on its Deli, a bit bare but the feel is right. Worth paying a few places a visit, London is packed with great cafes, esp Shoreditch, Chelsea and Soho. Some more ideas for inspiration from across the UK and NYC... http://www.barbakan-deli.co.uk/ http://www.deandeluca.com/ http://www.busaba.com/ http://www.thebreakfastclubsoho.com/ http://www.degustibus.co.uk/ http://www.petershamnurseries.com/
  15. Sorry RosieH, I understand JS is up the road... This is for those that want a convienient local shop (those without a car) open after normal hours in the week 6-10pm and for a reasonable price. Tesco Local isn't central, Budgens is Budgens and the local Butchers and Fishmongers are accessible for working people only on a Saturday... oh and another queue debate! :)
  16. wise words. After a previous stint in Putney I suffered similiar frustrations with Somerfield. Long queues and over priced, as well as a pants product range. I just don't think Somerfield 'gets' East Dulwich. When can we get a Sainsbury's Local, M&S or even heaven forbid Waitrose wher ethey tailor their offer to the local populus!? yours in food snobery.
  17. Christ snorky, that's a remarkably upbeat tone. Your social life must be intense?
  18. A lot of chat about energy efficiency measures to Victorian houses... Yes you are right, they are quite inefficient, an average house has the equivilant of 38 bricks missing with a lack of draught proofing and insulation! There is plenty you can be doing though, from a ?30 energy meter that measures your savings in real time to draft proofing your front door (?10) as well as loft/roof/wall insulation (?300). I found some really good websites while making a few improvements last year... http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/What-can-I-do-today/Energy-saving-grants-and-offers/Search-for-grants-and-offers http://www.ethicalsuperstore.com/category/electronics-and-appliances/home-energy-meters/ http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?fh_eds=%3f&fh_reffacet=categories&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3c%7b9372016%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9372050%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9372234%7d&fh_refview=summary&fh_refpath=facet_159016185
  19. just found out that it's ?1,200 per year but 2 x membership fee as a joining fee! I remember now that golf is quite expensive, but looking at the website an incredible course for london!
  20. From seeing the attitude (smile!) of the people paid to pick up the litter, I'm not surprised. Why is it people can't do a job with a smile on their face, it's as if they're doing someone an ungodly favour! Anyhow besides my social gripe, an awesome event, makes me proud to live in such a great part of London, a real community! Shame we can't have them more often? Great start to a great summer!
  21. just got done last night too! she was a tall black lady mid 30s, from "28 Tyrrell Road" (just up the road), she asked for ?6 for her electricity after giving a sob story etc... I gave in. At the end of the day we get done either the way, the thought of being taken for a mug or by feeling guilty for not helping someone in need. If you have given her some money, I'm sure you'll be handed some fate when you need it! (she was very convincing though)
  22. From an experience in Putney a few years back if you don't deadlock your front door, you're asking for trouble. They can often look like quite 'respectable people', so not to raise suspicion, normally they'll ring the door bell, if there's no one in they'll push the door to see if the door is deadlocked... if not they can jam it open with one of their many tools. When they're in they start at the top flat and can make as much noise as they want... thankfully we were insured but would have preferred to have caught them in the act! PS - sometimes even a fake alarm box outside is enough to put them off.
  23. Foxtons are scum. A few of my friends worked for them and if you've seen whistle blower you'll know the bullying tactics they use to artificially inflate prices - if there's any risk the housing market beyong interest rates its crooks like this! Apart from the fact that the offices will make ED look even more swanky I'd consider lobbying them out as they'll try and run the oagents out of business such is their approach. Foxtons please go back to the hole you came from.
