  1. wilson - I'm not sure about drafting, but I agree that it would be good to see apprenticeships coming back into popularity, and I think prisoners should be occupied with work, rather than staring at the walls of their cells for most of the day. I would like to see prisoners' time divided between learning trades they can use outside prison (or formal academic study if they want to), and working in a productive way that benefits the economy outside the prison where they are kept. I also think the closure of so many youth clubs has not helped the situation. I think a lot of the kids (and young people have indeed had a huge part to play in the recent destruction and violence) have a lot more potential than they are given credit for, but when they engage in this kind of behaviour, they cannot be surprised that they are mistrusted and dismissed by others. But if they feel they have nothing to lose (by engaging in criminal activity), nothing they have worked for and built, it is much harder to make them feel they have anything invested in the communities they live in. If young people are not willing to engage with learning in a school environment, I would like to see a sensible system where they could learn and earn in apprenticeships and build a future for themselves.
  2. A 24hr service would be good too! Many's the time I've had to take a long trudge home from Brixton after a night out, due to lack of any other viable option.
  3. Good route but hardly any of them! More buses please. Every 10 minutes would be lovely. (Unrealistic?)
  4. Yeah, they replaced it with the Dangerous Dogs Act didn't they? It would be nice if they could effectively implement something pre-emptive like a licencing system, without it being prohibitively expensive for good dog owners. That's been one of the criticisms levelled at the idea - that it'd just be a hefty tax on dog owners.
  5. I wholeheartedly agree and have thought this for years. It's too easy to get a dog for the wrong reasons, and either not care for it properly, or disregard the comfort and safety of others. I think it would be sensible to expect people to prove they know what they're doing when they take responsibility for an animal that they are going to take out in public on a daily basis. Dogs would benefit enormously from there being some regulation of how they can be owned and treated, and it might go some way to reducing the current situation where certain breeds are merely owned as status symbols and/or weapons. I know the RSPCA supports the idea of something like this, though other charities take a more negative view of it. petersen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I > really am starting to think that should have to > get a dog licence before being allowed a dog, and > that ownership should maybe be regulated. 6. It was reet good. That's all I have to say about that. Reet good.
  7. "cruel cats"? What an absurd thing to post - and quite irrelevant to this discussion. We are talking about a dog owner taking responsibility for the dogs he walks through local public streets. We are not debating the natural instincts of animals (or assigning morals to them); their natural behaviour isn't in question, nor is anyone blaming the dogs.
  8. Very sad - he sounds lovely, I'm so sorry to hear about this. Hope you find out what happened.
  9. Good on your housemate for diving in and trying to help - even small dogs can be scary when they're in attack mode, and these dogs were obviously in that state, so that in itself is pretty courageous. I hope the guy can be identified and reported to the police. If he doesn't know how to control his pets and stop them maiming another animal, (i.e. walk them on a lead, with a muzzle if need be) he shouldn't be a pet owner, and those dogs need and deserve a responsible owner who will train and supervise them properly so they don't get into trouble! I would be very sad if this incident led to any harm coming to the dogs, as it isn't their fault, but this can't be allowed to happen, to another animal or indeed to a person. Poor cat. I'm glad you and your housemate were there to help it and give the poor wee thing some comfort. 10. I think you should be able to tell from looking at a painting, though, whether it's an original or a print. maxxi Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Okay I could be totally wrong, and I apologise to > said art student in advance if I am, but there > used to be a scam - back in the early 1980s - > where a van would take a handful of young people > to a different area every night/weekend, armed > with convincing looking prints etc. that cost only > a couple of quid, and claiming to be art students > trying to 'get by'. 11. Not the same cat as this one, is it? http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/file.php?28,file=27341 http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?28,679281 He/she has a white nose and bib, and his back legs are white. I've seen him around Copleston Rd.
  12. They're okay but I don't really understand the pets surcharge. I had to pay ?1.50 extra yesterday for the inclusion of a hamster in a cage - it's not like any debris was left in the car!
  13. I didn't because I suppose I thought the police would think I was wasting their time over a potted plant, but if you think I should, I will!
  14. Where in ED are you? I'm on Copleston Road, and the same happened to me a week or two ago, large pot of carrots I was growing stolen from our top step, either on a Saturday or Sunday.
  15. The Peckham Rye guy is great, he charges absolute pennies and always does a really decent job. Friendly chap too. Merrifields is okay as a second option (and I can't comment on the bespoke shoes as I've never had any) but I have been disappointed with repairs from there before (had new heel tips attached which then fell off after less than a week) so I usually favour the one in Rye Lane Market. mrsw Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I know it's not ED, but there's an excellent shoe > repairer who's very reasonable in the market on > Rye Lane in Peckham.
  16. Copleston Road looks beautiful at the moment with its trees & blossom. I hope it won't be subjected to this. :(
  17. ...and that everyone wants to wave their expensive smart phones around in the street! Good news about the countdown boards - they're always welcome.
  18. Oh... d'you mean the curious little alleyway right at the end of Ivanhoe Road that comes out at the top of Choumert? I've only been through there once (middle of the day, before I knew my way around the area) - very pretty, if a bit perplexing!
  19. I use it quite a lot as Hoopers (on Ivanhoe) is my local. Personally never had or seen any problems. There's also 2 bus stops (1 for each direction) on the bridge if that's at all useful.
  20. I think there are some sensible and human ideas in this post. I would also like to see some of this kind of attitude being employed in schools with the more difficult kids. My mother runs the library at a school with a high number of quite troubled pupils, and finds her library being something of a sanctuary for kids avoiding other problems, and we were discussing something like this recently. Make them engage in something productive and/or creative, whether it's extra-curricular learning, gardening, or helping in the community. It might start as a form of detention for bad behaviour (a damn sight more instructive than the pointless and demeaning task of writing lines), but if rewards are implemented quite soon into the process, they could begin to see it not just as something they're being made to do, but something they can gain from, and it could become something they take pride in. It could be steered toward work placements/work experience/apprenticeships, or connect them to part time jobs (age dependent of course) to put money in their pockets. It would need the support of their parents and some teachers/folks in the community willing to get involved, but it might help. 21. Despite my knee-jerk reaction of 'Oooh yes please' I think actually the folks speaking against it are right. LL has character & is the heart of the area and the beginnings of an array of chain stores could only weaken that. Sainsburys has everything anyone needs grocerywise (and is hardly shabby) and I would not like to see places like the farm shop and William Rose forced out of business by another big name on Lordship Lane.
  22. A lady popped into our shop yesterday on Bellenden Rd to ask if we'd had a purse handed in! I'm off work today but if you can hold onto it til tmw I can PM you her number...
  23. It would be VERY nice to have a Boots or Superdrug. No more having to traipse over to Rye Lane or get a bus to Camberwell...
  24. Following this I went with what I know (decent customer service and uk call centres) and got an iPhone 4 on Orange. It's actually fine! Some dodgy reception on the first day but perfect since then, including inside my flat. I got a 10% linerental discount after threatening to go with another network so now I'm on ?31.50 a month, and using our contents insurance to cover the phone instead of the pricy cover that Orange offer.
