I don't actually understand what help that > map is If you look at the map closely there are lines with dots which shows the routes that are included in the safe walking route. You are right that Charter does not have a catchment and to be fair the map does not mention catchment in the blurb.
  2. Just noticed that Charter has put its safe-walking distance map on its website.
  3. Southwark Gymnastics are based at Brunswick school in Camberwell. There is also a gym club at Alleyns (though heard that its much more expensive)
  4. Agree with gwod that aspirational heroines can be 2d. I've just bought my newly 11 year old Anne Frank's Diary. Not fictional obviously but a really good read. Anne is a teenager dealing with ordinary teenage issues including puberty and boys but living in a scary dangerous world. In spite of the topic the book is not depressing. Would really recommend.
  5. Actually, there are a lot of feisty, clever, brave girls from the classics too - Anne of Green Gables, Jo from Little Women, the heroines of Secret Garden and Railway Children, Arietty from Borrowers...
  6. Yes, it seems that they've been up their old tricks again.
  7. According to a Guardian article, the situation is "the departure of at least 40 teachers over this academic year, including 15 from science alone. The school started the year with 125 teaching staff". http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2012/jul/02/speed-read-academies-teachers-meals That is pretty massive - a third of teachers leaving in one year! I will try and get this confirmed when I visit the school with my Y6 child. Renata, is this something that you can look into?
  8. millymol said "With year 6 parents currently trying to choose schools for next year it seems unfair to withhold this information from them." Totally agree. Its essential information. There is a thread on mumsnet on the topic http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/1573637-Kingsdale It appears that there has been a huge staff turnover last year.
  9. Don't forget Prendagast, that's your way and we loved it (a few yrs ago I must admit)
  10. Thanks Renata for asking. That is really bizarre! How can the staff not know the results? Presumably the students have been told? Agree with Ann that the first set of results are provisional and should be taken with a pinch of salt. But essential info for the upcoming open days.
  11. We got married at the Chelsea Town Hall on the Kings Road. Great location!
  12. Thanks DenmotherSmith. Have to yet visit Kingsdale but the results on their website seems to be last year's. Renata, if you are reading this, do you know their results?
  13. Not sure if a map on website is a crucial deciding factor when choosing to put it on list. Surely given the school's popularity, anyone within several miles radius would be putting it down on the off chance?

Regardless of the grammar you should read the pieces as if true, its something we as parents should be concerned about.
  15. (One of the findings is that the natural children of highly educated parents appear to enjoy a fourfold greater benefit to their own attainment than children adopted into those families - an odd outcome if "it's what parents 'do'") Hmmm? I see your point, but 'adoption' covers a whole gamut of situations from babies adopted at near birth to children of various ages adopted later in life (with associated problems leading from neglect/institutionalisation and other social/emotional problems). It would be more meaningful if 'adopted' children were not just lumped into one category and the result was more nuanced.
  16. Are there any more results published now? eg Kingsdale, Sydenham Girls, Harris Girls?
  17. Definitely would not throw them in at the deep end come secondary - they will have enough on their plate without adding venturing solo into London streets. My yr5 child has been walking the best part of the journey on her own since easter. My main worry are the road crossings particularly as there are so many parked cars (remember Green X code man who said to find a stretch of road clear of parked cars? Impossible in 2012).
  18. My daughters used to love to going to Arty Party holiday clubs - http://artyparty.co.uk/. Not that local but we thought worth travelling for. The artworks they came back with still adorn our house now!
  19. Both my daughters learned to swim using Polly Otter swimsuits with polystyrene inserts. Brilliant and much better than arm bands.
  20. We had our reception in the pump house in Battersea Park. It's a hidden gem (so hidden that one of our guest never found it (!) and if you are lucky as we were, you get some lovely art on the walls to decorate your party!
  21. Just back from Mersea Island - Essex coast is really underrated, lovely countryside on the Essex/Suffolk borders too.
  22. Would second melbourne groover, south bank is very buzzy. Some great outdoor installations and roof gardens near Festival Hall too not to mention pop up cafe's if weather is good. Near the London Eye too.
  23. I keep absolutely everything that looks vaguely official. Quite interesting to look back on eg how much you used earn? if you're interested in such things.
  24. Immunisation is not all about you and your child, its about the community and those children out there who are weak and cannot be immunised (childreen on chemo and those with HIV), they need protection and the best protection we can give them is preventing outbreaks by immunising the healthy children. Use whatever scheduling you want but immunise them before they start mixing actively with other children and becoming a danger. Totally agree
