Just seen this - are we at chain tipping point locally?
nxjen replied to Louisa's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It was a second hand shop that always had a large number of buggies on the forecourt. Agree with post that Cheese Block predated ED Deli. There was though another delicatessen a few doors up, possibly where Headnizm is now. -
Crown House, anyone know what the plan is for new use.

Thank EDP, the remark about Grade II listing baffled me -
You read it here: the demolished wing of Dulwich Hospital

Is there a strategic, coherent proposal for the site? The LibDems are working hard to ensure part of the land is used for a new secondary school but as KK has posted above, the land doesn't belong to them or the Council. Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate the need for a new school and am supportive of the site being used for one IF there is sufficient land left over after the medical facility is built and the health needs of East Dulwich have been met. -

Nothing to do with eating chicken or class, more a desire for an accurate description of what East Dulwich was like before, well, let's call it gentrification.

House prices go up, the neighbourhood goes down

Houses in East Dulwich are much better maintained now than when I moved here 30 years ago. There has been a cultural shift in that time, houseowners are more aware of their homes as a capital asset, and invest in them more. Comparing ED to DV is a bit of a red herring. -

I find the original post very peculiar, its whimsy and exaggeration seem more appropriate for a creative writing assignment than as an accurate description of the houses in East Dulwich. To describe ED as a slum reflects a very sheltered life! -
and there's Nunhead Cemetery and One Tree Hill

It's very strange that such hostility should be shown towards these proposals which, as far as I can see, may result in parts of the park being unusable for very short periods of time at very infrequent intervals. And good luck with your idea that not only should the "flood meadow" be located on the open fields south of the south circular which may be owned by Dulwich Estate but that they should also pay for the works. Thank you Siouzie14 for giving context and background information to the consultation.

Why so many great hardware shops in ED?
nxjen replied to eucalyptus's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Lots of old houses needing constant maintenance -
Jah Lush Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Check your guttering. Usually helps. Totally agree. A recent leak through the ceiling of our house was a result of a defective gutter installation which Russell Perring fixed quickly and inexpensively. I'm shocked at such an uncharitable attitude, and I doubt anyone running one of the few charity shops already in East Dulwich would in fact sign any such petition. Thankfully any petition would have little chance of success. Who would it be addressed to?

For those, like me, who didn't have a clue what a Mary Portas Charity shop is: "Mary Portas charity shops were first regarded as a crux of the High Street ? in 2009 she embarked upon revitalising Save the Children charity shops with gusto, creating a ?different? sort of charity shop in the form of ?Mary?s Living and Giving Shop? (be warned of hyperbole!) Portas seemingly disregarded what many see as the beauty of the charity shop ? its uniqueness. The stores became diluted and clinical, less individual and more like any other retailer. ?Living and Giving? shops can be found today in suburban gentrified neighbourhoods, with inflated prices where profit is paramount. So what ? as long as they are operating for charity? Isn?t modernising a positive step to remain competitive? There is definitely an argument for the cause here, as surely more profit equates to a greater benefit for the parent charity and the greater good? On the flipside however, by locating in affluent areas, potential customers who could actively benefit from affordable second-hand goods at a local level are excluded. People who really need access to cheap second-hand items are thus priced out of the market by the organisations which are arguably supposed to be there to help them." Northcross greengrocers may be closed/redeveloped

"This discussion is entirely missing the point" EDF has form on this re planning issues - see the endless M&S v Iceland thread where many thought the planning application would be decided by showing support for their favoured store like it was some great X Factor vote. -
Oh my, such pain. Am also glad I don't have to endure them any more or come up with a believable excuse why I couldn't attend.

I'm unable to see on the planning application anything to do with change of use and no it's not down to the council to decide whether the street needs another estate agent more than it does a greengrocer. As has been stated on the thread already the application will be granted or refused on what the proposed building alterations are. -

Is it known if they will have to vacate permanently or just while the works are being carried out? -

Whether Pretty's remain or not is governed by their lease, or lack of. I would though be very sorry to see them go. When I moved here 30 years ago there was a greengrocer there which Chris later took over and successfully turned into the popular business it is today. The previous incarnation was really old fashioned: on requesting some parsley one time, the reaction was if I'd asked for something really quite shocking!
