  1. Thanks, Charliebrown, and other positive posters. We work incredibly hard to produce our wares for this and other markets, so it's pretty disheartening when people write the whole market off in such a dismissive fashion. It's a bit quiet at the moment, but this market isn't dying - and we are very grateful to all of our lovely regular customers who are so supportive and positive about what we're doing. May the market go from strength to strength.
  2. The Licensing Committee meets this Tuesday from 7pm at the Town Hall. Northcross Road is the last item on the agenda.

  5. Our beef and ale stew and dumplings is certainly catching on in East Dulwich, Huguenot. It flies out from our stall on North Cross Road on Saturdays. Pop along to Mother's Dumplings to have a try!
  6. Thanks for the tip, Tarot. Will get the dumpling researchers onto it forthwith.

  8. To trade on North Cross Road, you have to apply to Southwark Street Trading for a temporary licence. They grant licences on the basis of pitches available, commodities offered, etc. Not sure if there's a waiting list for Saturdays at the moment. If you get a licence, you then trade as regularly as you wish, paying only for those days. You have to provide your own stall. The pitch fees go to Southwark Council. Hope that answers a few of your questions, Tarot.
  9. Hi It's ?18 for weekdays. ?24 for Saturdays.
  10. We saw a kingfisher in Peckham Rye Park a couple of years ago, darting back and forth up the brook and finally settling on a tree for a good ten minutes. We just stood and stared, spellbound, while passersby walked on oblivious. Wonderful to see one so close to home! 14. Hi As a food vendor on North Cross Road market, I would just like to explain the measures we put in place to ensure the food is safe. All food vendors should be registered with the Food Safety Team - and are then subject to inspection of both their kitchen facilities and their stall conditions and practices. They should also have a level 2 food hygiene certificate which ensures that they are aware of all the precautions that need to be taken to ensure that food is safe. We are required to fill out records of cooking, cooling and reheating times, core temperatures and refrigeration and freezer temperatures. Food kept at the stall therefore needs to be kept either in a fridge or a coolbox, with a temperature below 8 degrees. Small amounts of cold food should be put on display at any one time, and topped up with food from the coolbox/fridge. Hot food needs to be kept at a minimum temperature of 68 degrees - so hot food vendors should have a food thermometer to hand. The last thing we would want to do is put our customers at risk of food poisoning, so we take extreme in care in adhering to the rules in keeping food out of the 'danger zone'. Obviously, we can't speak for other traders, but I did just want to reassure our customers that our food is perfectly safe! Mother's Dumplings
  15. I don't think the market will extend to weekdays any time soon. I trade on a Friday and it's pretty lonely! Though Southwark did make a concerted effort to extend the market to Fridays in the summer with a fair number of new stalls, they have all dropped off as a result of trade being pretty slow... These things clearly take time to build, and traders simply won't come out if business isn't brisk enough (although we're persevering with Fridays...)
