  1. Goodness, the developer's consultant has skewed the evidence! Talk about partial and disingenuous - he's got it nailed. I have found the notes from other people here extremely useful in considering my own submission (thank you, MarkT and Zak) so, in case it helps anyone else who is also struggling to make coherent sense of what I believe to be misleading representations and interpretations in the appeal documents, I have attached my own contribution to the debate. The window for submissions closes on 17th Jan., which is Sunday, but you can upload comments to the online portal at https://acp.planninginspectorate.gov.uk/ViewCase.aspx?caseid=3135088 (make sure you get the right reference number, APP/A5840/W/15/3135088). Even if you copy sections that you agree with out of the other comments, it's worth doing because lots of objections will strengthen the case for rigorous review.
  2. Well, the Kickstarter page has closed and by midday, 108 backers had pledged ?13,605 to help bring this project to life. Watch out for more news - it's bound to make the Peckham Peculiar, if not the Standard though any of you who backed it will probably get updates via e-mail anyway. Well done all.
  3. Something's definitely happening, sjsl, because the donations have jumped another ?1k since you posted - you've started a chain reaction! Still another grand to go in the next 12 hours, but all of us forum-ites together, we can do it!
  4. Well, this is really getting close now.... I just looked at the Kickstarter site and in the last 24 hours, the pledges have jumped to ?10k - one final push and it could get there. (With absolutely no good reason, I've started to take this personally, now!) So, tell your friends, get the word out and though the person with the idea and drive to start the project doesn't even know any of us, we could make the difference - we could help introduce Shakespeare to a new generation that can relate to stories told by people they can identify with. Angel wings all round!
  5. There was an interview with the film's main man on London Live and it can be seen again here: http://www.londonlive.co.uk/news/2015-12-08/peckham-gets-the-shakespeare-treatment I just checked the Kickstarter site and the project has got 60 backers so far, but it's still ?6k short and only 8 days left. If anyone reading this knows someone who might be interested in getting their name on the credits, do point them in the direction of the site. And Zak, you are right, he seems to have a part in Jericho.
  6. Could well be. If you want to see him in action, then ED/Peckham borderers may recognise something of the dilemma he describes in his poem 'Middle Class', which he can be seen performing here:http://youtu.be/fsHPNWDPzzE
  7. I've just pledged some money on Kickstarter for a film project I'd really like to see the result of! It's got the double attraction of being done by someone local who is becoming well known as an actor (if you went to the National/ED Picture House to see Man & Superman, you'll have seen him) and is being filmed not far away. Seeing as how I was motivated enough to offer support, I thought others might feel the same so here's a bit of the website pitch: "The film is 15min in real time and is set in an estate in Peckham where I grew up. It captures estate life and different people's stories. The twist is every single word spoken is Shakespeare. I have gone through THE complete WORKS of Shakespeare and woven together a story using only his words. Given that it's the 400th year of his death in 2016 I thought now was the time." Here's a link to the kickstarter page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2132164114/the-works-short-film/description (The way it works is if he doesn't get all the backing he needs, no-one's pledge is redeemed) What's more, if it gets fully funded, I'll be a Christmas Angel!

    Lady, but no Van

Help, everyone, please - she is not sleeping in the same spot tonight, so the Streetlink outreach team won't be able to locate her.....keep your eyes out and let them know on 0300 5000914, file ref: WD209116

Dead right! Always difficult to know what to do for the best when encountering rough sleepers close up. To be a rough sleeper in the first place means there must have been some sort of traumatic event or downward spiral in the person's life and most of us are just not equipped to offer the sort of support that is any use. We dutifully donate to Thamesreach and do volunteerng but when it comes to actually taking the initiative, it's always a risk that you'll get into more than you bargained for. Still, can't just walk on by........

    Lady, but no Van

A combination of being late already and not wanting to rush up and alarm her meant that we didn't speak to her either time, though it has been reported to us third-hand that she is Dutch and has 'lost everything' - though I'm not sure about the veracity of either of those observations. There has also been a report that an ambulance and police car were at East Dulwich train station earlier this evening, but it's not at all clear that this was anything to do with this lady.
  12. Yesterday evening around 8.45pm, just off Grove Vale, a lady who looked as if she was not used to rough sleeping was bedding down. She was standing on Grove Vale itself this morning, cardboard and blankets in hand, appearing to be a bit bewildered. We have notified the StreetLink team (file ref: WD209116) but they generally go out at night when people have settled in to a sheltered niche so, if anyone sees this lady, could you maybe take a moment to call StreetLink on 0300 500 0914, give the reference and update them on her whereabouts? Thank you.

  14. Nope, no Gary Stefan but Joe Johnston's wearing the C - and Warren Rost, suited and booted, is the Coach. (if you're of an era to remember Gary, you may also be interested/sad to hear that Joe's grandfather, Alex, died last week) There is still a great sense of family about the team and now the Zamboni works, the ice is frozen and the spectators are warm it's deffo worth a visit. Invicta on Saturday, 5.30 face-off. Eat 'em raw.
  15. Oh, the Redskins are back - and then some! On a bit of a surge at the moment with a few victories against some better-resourced teams, including their arch-nemeses, those bad boys from Invicta. Attendances seem to be well up, which is good news for everyone - more of an atmosphere and more income to balance the books. There seems to still be a healthy plexi-banging tradition kept up, so even though it's all new, old times aren't far away. Worth a visit one weekend. Check here for fixtures: http://streatham-redskins.co.uk/fixtures.
  16. First visit to Aneto today - this place understands what you mean when you ask for caffe macchiato. Hurrah! And frangipane that melts on the tongue. If you've not been there yet, make the time = you'll be glad you did.
  17. Carrie, you are absolutely correct in your analysis. There was nothing other than altruism at the heart of the decision to pay to secure the ring. A wedding band is probably the single most significant piece of jewellery and it was made clear that the intention of the "finder" was to sell that ring for cash. The handing over of money was a deliberate strategy to allow the ring to be given to the police so that the person who lost it would stnd more chance of having it returned to them. That it turned out to be a fake was only a post hoc revelation. A Grove Vale trader was also present at the time (it occurred outside their premises) and felt - and still feels - that with the evidence available at the time, it was the right action to take. The ring was subsequently taken to a Lordship Lane jeweller, who was unable to confirm whether it was or wasn't gold without giving it the proverbial acid test - that's an indicator of the standard of production of these items. It saddens me that an intention to raise awareness has produced less than pleasant responses. I'm glad to be with someone who gives the benefit of the doubt rather than someone who sneers and walks on by.
  18. Beware all..... You're walking along, minding your own business, when someone coming in the opposite direction suddenly finds a large gold wedding band on the pavement between you. They look at it and then hold it out towards you, indicating the stamps on the inside of the band that have the appearance of hallmarks, as if seeking your engagement (no pun intended...). Because you are a caring and responsible person, you are naturally perturbed at the thought that some poor person has lost their wedding ring. Maybe you suggest they take it to the police. They indicate that they will keep the ring but that if you want to hand it in, you must give them money in order to secure it. What do you do? My partner, concerned that if he didn't secure the ring it would find its way to a pawnshop, handed over ?10 to a man who had "found" such a ring. And then, discovered it was a bit of plumbing brass, shined up to look the part until he got a closer look. That was a few months ago, on Grove Vale. This morning, to my surprise, a woman walking along Grove Vale towards me found an identical wedding ring on the pavement. What are the odds?! Anyway, she wasn't very happy when I pointed out that it was a bit of brass and suggested that she was working a number. She pocketed the ring, stamped off muttering, crossed the road to the bus shelter outside the Blackbird and phoned up her oppo, with whom she had a lengthy conversation before breaking off and shouting and gesticulating at me because I had the temerity to observe her movements. She then walked off towards the Lane before suddenly dashing across the road and legging it up Oglander/Copleston Road. The police tell me that this is a very well known scam, mostly practiced in the West End by Romanian/Albanians working in pairs. Well, it's in East Dulwich now and I'm the second mark in one household. I bet there will be a few more people targeted out there before the end of the day. Just make sure it's not you or anyone you know.

  20. The Tree Council have some useful information downloads: http://www.treecouncil.org.uk/images/Community_Action_Programme/drought_and_tree_care.pdf (watering trees in a drought) and, at the opposite end of the weather spectrum.... http://www.treecouncil.org.uk/press-and-news/item/download/242 (caring for young trees in unsettled weather)
  21. I did wonder if anyone else had concerns about the increased potential for rubbish build-up in the wildlife area behind the new platform shelters, arising from the gap at the back. This morning, waiting for the late running 9.31 to London Bridge, I had plenty of opportunity to observe the stack of undistributed Metro newspapers, dumped in the corner next to the top of the path, being agitated by the wind and threatening to blow through. These and anything else dropped on the floor will be able to make a seamless habitat transition and become lodged amongst the brambles, awaiting archaeological discovery some time in the next century. Surely some bins wouldn't be too much to expect?

  23. Skies over ED can be both uplifting and armageddon-like, sometimes both at the same time, depending on what sort of a day I've had. I've looked out many times and marvelled before reaching for the camera. How many pictures of the sky does a person need, though? (lots, apparently......) Not the same night, but here's one of mine from a few months ago.
  24. James Barber wrote: "Camberwell councillors had no streets wanting controlled parking. They could'nt [sic] vote for controlled parking on a different community council area - that would set a really awkward precendent [sic]." A point of accuracy which may help Cllr Barber to understand the process as it has been administered elsewhere. At the Camberwell Community Council meeting on 10th January, before the councillors present expressed their view about the appropriate recommendation, Veronica Ward particularly asked whether they were being asked to make a recommendation with reference to the South Camberwell area alone or whether, having heard the evidence from the officers on the whole of the CPZ area consultation, they should be considering the proposed CPZ area in its entirely. She was clearly instructed that the recommendation that the Community Council were being asked to make should refer to the whole of the proposed CPZ area. Thus, not so much a "really awkward prececent" but actually guidance to the sitting councillors. On this basis, Cllr Barber therefore appears either mistaken or misguided in his assumption that he must make reference only to the results of the consultation that arise from roads within the Dulwich Community Council boundary. It is difficult to see why so much debate has arisen from the apparently clear outcome of the consultation. The report tells us that prior to the consultation, there were "44 requests from residents in the study area for a CPZ. This is where a resident has either made either a complaint or a general enquiry to the council, either directly to officers or via their elected members to request resident parking controls or a consultation." Of those who made their views known from streets within the proposed zone, there were a total of 84 responses in favour of a CPZ. So, despite ample opportunity for the lobby to gather momentum, the net gain in support has been just 40 additional people. It would seem logical to expect that if there was a strong movement in support of this form of parking controls, more than 40 people across the proposed zone would have taken the opportunity to tick the relevant boxes. Finally, I note that there are challenges issued on this forum to those who resist the call for a controlled parking zone to offer an alternative solution. It is difficult to understand why it should be seen as the responsibility of the general public to develop solutions when what the consultation has set out to do is to canvass opinion on a specific response to a perceived problem. If the outcome of the consultation is that a significant majority of those responding do not believe the proposals to be in the best interests of the wider community, then surely councillors would reject them and instruct the paid officers, not the members of the public, to research and propose alternatives.

Goodness me, did someone run along the railings with a stick and rattle the tiger's cage? Sorry to disappoint, dear heart, but I think you've confused me with someone who has an iPad or lives on Derwent Grove. Innocent on both counts. But no matter, for as you say, more seats were filled later in the meeting - sadly, some by folk who had timed their arrival based on the information on the Agenda which indicated that the CPZ item would be taken at 8.55 when, in fact, it was brought forward at the discretion of the Chair. Packed would, I think, be a slightly overheated description of attendance since there remained vacant seats over in the section furthest away from the door, which is where I was seated. Still, one thing we have seen is that it's not the number of bodies in the room but the coherence and unity of voice that will be important on 24th Jan., either way.
