  1. How would I know that there had been a power surge and of what duration?
  2. I do care about the shops on my local High Street. Obviously this makes me some kind of freak.
  3. I don't think anyone in SE22 is in the catchment for this school nowadays.
  4. Has she moved to East Dulwich then?
  5. I'm surprised to hear that no regulations or bylaws are being broken. If I recall correctly there was a similar issue with Dulwich Van Hire using the roads nearby to park their vehicles when they sold their yard (next to Barrys Food Store, now a terrace of houses). They had to stop in the end, but I can't remember how that came about. There was a long thread on the forum about it.
  6. If you mean the VW campervan business I agree with you Lynne!
  7. Salted caramel. Gnome hats. False eyelashes. Everyone having a dog.
  8. I honestly hate them all.
  9. We have had excellent advice and help from Massimo, who can be contacted via the Winkworth office on Lordship Lane. I think I am correct in saying that he is independent of Winkworth, just rents space from them (but don't quote me).
  10. I have always drummed it into my children that the green man is not a green light to cross. You must always take care and assume that a driver or cyclist has not seen the red light, every single time. Did neither of you get the number plate?
  11. What is the point of a ?3,000 scholarship?
  12. I hope your friend makes a good recovery a fish. I know I should know better but as a cyclist I feel a deep sense of shame and embarrassment when I see other cyclists defending the indefensible practice of cycling on the pavement. It has been said eleventy million times already but if you feel unsafe cycling on the road (and I wouldn't tackle the Elephant & Castle roundabouts or Vauxhall Cross) then get off and push! If you don't feel unsafe on the road then get off the jeffing pavement.
  13. If the number on free school meals at Charter is in line with the national average then that is not the same as being in line with the London average, or the SE London average, I wouldn't have thought?
  14. Which are the best streets to live in for primary catchments in ED these days - does anyone get a choice of more than 2? I imagine there is a point in or around the DKH Estate where you are in catchment for St John's & St Clements, DKH and Goose Green. But do any other streets overlap any more?
  15. It really annoys me when you (collective) aren't allowed to state a preference for living in ED x number of years ago! Why can't I say that? its absolutely true. I used to really love living here, now not so much. I was never interested in living in a boho place with a buzz (too old when I moved here and I'd already done my 10 years in Dalston), but ED at the time had attractive affordable housing, some reasonable places on the High Street ... ok, Spaghetti Western and The Cheese Block ... and a friendly atmosphere. Whereas now it is like Clapham with fewer chain stores (but not for much longer).
  16. I am definitely missing the point - if grammar schools are not about bright kids then what are they about? And, duchessofdulwich, yes, some children do get a grammar place without tutoring but they are a tiny minority. Most children in grammar schools today have been tutored or been to private prep.
  17. It was widely reported last year that the Kent grammars are going to work towards tutor proofing their tests. Quite right too. The grammar "system" in this country at the moment is absurd.
  18. I really like the new hairdressers, The Galleon, on the corner of Dunstans Road and Forest Hill Road. I have never had my hair cut at GM. I had an appointment booked there once, many moons ago when they first opened, for 10am. At 10.30, when my stylist was still attending to someone else, I upped and left and never went back.
  19. Gutted :( best cafe in ED by miles.
  20. Omg at the shed! Am speechless. Just ... words fail ...
  21. There is another thread on this, started yesterday.
  22. Which are the best roads in Sydenham and where do boys age 11+ go to school (state)? Apart from Forest Hill Boys.

    Foie Gras

I gave that original fois gras thread a swerve at the time but have read it now ... quite an education. Ugly stuff.
  24. You posted yesterday so its possibly too late, but the book I have most enjoyed in the past couple of years is the Keith Richards autobiography, Life. You didn't express a preference for fiction or non-fiction. I highly recommend, a rollicking good read.
  25. There is a small shallow pool at the National Sports Stadium (Crystal Palace) which is undisturbed by Saturday am swim lessons. Or, what about Peckham Pulse?
