Appeal for local support: Aquarius Festival 2013
Brian Tee replied to Brian Tee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's getting closer. Let's keep this support for live music alive and well in East Dulwich!! Show your support to your neighbours. It costs nothing, is non-intrusive, and is helping to fund an amazing day of live music on 31st August. If you play music, sign up. If you love to see live music, sign up. All addresses that do sign up will be sent a free entry coupon for the Festival itself. -
If you love your music live, why not sign up for a board in support of Aquarius festival? We'd happily accomodate a bit of live drumming at the Festival. Local volunteers required to simply allow an estate agent board advertising the Festival to be put up outside their home for the month of August. Just go to the thread, also in this section, to read more and sign up! http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1115032

Thanks to you all for your support!! Spread the word!! The more the merrier, and the happier our sponsors will be! Let's flood the streets with Aquarius Festival boards! Cut off date for your support will have to be something like late July, just so we give the winning bidder time to produce all of the boards. Great to see such a supportive local spirit - keeping it live!!! -

Thanks to everyone showing support so far. The festival is such a great community event, I would love to see more people stepping up. What harm will a board outside your house that advertises the festival do? None at all. What good will it do? Bring substantial funding from a local estate agent into the festival. More funding = a better event for everyone!!! It's a chance for the gentlefolk of East Dulwich to really show how much they support live music. The more, the better. Simple as that. -

That was not the Festival, but a kind of 'benefit' gig. All of those bands, plus another 4 or so will be performing on Festival day, which is on August 31st. So can you jump in and have a board, or not? It is non-intrusive, costs you absolutely nothing, and will help with funding. ED Community Crowd-sourcing support for Aquarius Festival
Brian Tee replied to Brian Tee's topic in The Lounge
I'm in! -
Not an appeal for money, just an appeal for local support. As a part of this year's fund raising prpogramme, apart from grants from Southwark's Community Awards fund and (hopefully) the Arts Council), we are trying to encourage local estate agents to support the Festival with funding. The obvious pay-off for the 'bidding' estate agent would be the erection of their branded boards advertising the festival, posted around the area. Many of the Golf Clubs members will be volunteering to support this activity, as a way of supporting the Festival, which will be in its 4th year this year. I am reaching out to the East Dulwich community for any residents who would like to join us in supportin the festival by having a board erected for the month of August. Obviously, privacy is essential, so please PM me with your address details if you would like to help. Also, reply to theis thread with the simple response, 'I'm in' to keep the thread lively and near the top of the Lounge listings. I know that East Dulwich is packed with musicians, music lovers, and supporters of the arts, and we wasnt to keep the Aquarius Festival running and improving year on year, so the additional funding is essential for our ongoing development. At the end of the day your involvement will cost you nothing, will help to contribute significantly to a local Community festival (on Saturday August 31st), and the estate agent will get a major splash of local promotion as a reward for their investment. The more that volunteer, the greater the potential backing. So if you have the space in front of your home, please join the Aquarius Festival throng! Thanks!! Brian

Hi everyone! As many of you know, this is the 4th year that we've held a live music festival at Aquarius Golf club, one of the coolest locations in London. As those of you who attend the festival know, it costs next to nothing for adults to get in and enjoy 20 or so live performances on 2 stages. I have attached a running order for this year's event, which just demonstrates what a feast of music of all genres we are providing, for the local community to enjoy, in a safe, secure and quite stunning environment. This is a simple call for help that involves no additional cost or intrusion. As a part of our fund-raisng for Aquarius Festival this year, we have approached a number of estate agents in East Dulwich. We have secured a quite wonderful offer of support from one of them, and wish to reward them for their incredible support with a show of support from the local community, by displaying boards outside your homes for a few weeks ahead of the festival, to show your support for the day, and for local live music. The boards would go up at the beginning of August, and the festival is at the end of August, on Saturday 31st. Are there any Aquarius Festival (or live music) fans out there who would volunteer to have a board outside their house for just a month? The greater the response to this, the better, as we'll be promoting the festival collectively, across the area. At the end of the day your support will be entirely free, and non-intrusive, but would also be helping to raise the funds and awareness that we need to keep Aquarius Festival running as the Biggest Little Festival in London. For security/privacy sake, if you are able to join in the fun, please PM me with your address, so I can pass it on to the 'winning' estate agent. But also, if you're in, please leave the message 'I'm in' on this thread. That will keep it fizzing at the top of this area on the forum. I know East Dulwich is full of music lovers and live music supporters, as well as many of the amazing artists that we bring to the community at Aquarius Festival, and I really hope you will all show your support by joining in this cause. Thank you, in anticipation of your ongoing support!! Peace & Love Brian

Every year I make a hamper for my Ma & Pa with a visit to Greens (Wines & Spirits) Lordship Lane Deli (all kinds of stuff) and also Franklins Deli in case there's anything really interesting. Usually my finished hamper is around a quarter of the price of a commercial/pre-pack, and the shopping adventure is a bit of a hoot, too, involving often thoughtful selection of small but quite costly items that you would only ever buy at this time of year. Now my folks are in their 80's, this actually gives them a buzz on Christmas day opening up a box of mystery delicacies. If it weren't for Lordship Lane, this would never have become such a fun holiday ritual, which I can firmly recommend to anyone stuck for a gift for their parents. Get Vocal & Shop Local!!

The bottles of pee again/ Action/ Investigation
Brian Tee replied to Nathan_worlingham's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I had no idea there was a section for witches!!! Interestingly, here's another excerpt from the internet's vast library of Witch Bottle information. Modern-Witch-Bottles Very generally speaking, the modern day Witch-bottles are very similar to historical Witch-bottles in their basic structure, even though their intended purpose has changed. The most common purpose for constructing a Witch-bottle today is capturing negative energies targeted at the constructor of the bottle, her family or her home. Even though some bottles are "mirroring" in nature, they aren't normally built to cause agony to the sender of negative energy/caster of curses. Some Witch-bottles are intended to change negative energy into positive one and then release it into the surrounding area. This kind of bottles could be classified as "guard and protect"-bottles. If the bottles are of the latter variety, we're looking at a (very) local resident. I blame Harry Potter! Chillaxed Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Ha ha. The bottles of pee again/ Action/ Investigation
Brian Tee replied to Nathan_worlingham's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A little time on my hands has revealed an interesting potential avenue: Witch Bottles. Commonly used in the 16th and 17th Century as a spell to attract and trap negative energy. The bottles are usually used by people who are frightened of or feel threatened by the 'black arts'. Usually they also contain symbolic body waste, like hair, navel fluff and fingernails. Not sure if anyone's had a close enough look to see if that kind of thing is in there. The sheer volume of the 'Witch Bottles of East Dulwich' as I now like to think of them, could be indicative of an individual or group who are somehow playing with dark forces, or involve someone who believes his wife to be a witch, and is resorting to the old craft. Here is an excerpt from an Old Bailey record from 1682, which documents a husband, believing his wife to be a victim of witchcraft, being advised to: "take a quart of your Wive's urine, the paring of her Nails, some of her Hair, and such like, and boyl them well in a Pipkin." The Witches of Dulwich are at it again!! -
peckham park (elm trees cut down)
Brian Tee replied to tim hill's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There are notoces on a number of trees in the park that are being cut down, including one on the Forest Hill Road entrance opposite the boys school. I suppose the amount of water was affecting the tree. -
I seem to recall when a dog was unfortunately killed by a car on Marmora Road that the idea of blocking roads in and around Scutari Road was raised. The fear was that it would simply force traffic to use Mundania/Shelbury/Dovedale as an alternative. The routing in Honor Oak Park is a definite example of how this can be done well, so there is a great local example to be considered.

Re: Freeview - How Many Channels in East Dulwich
Brian Tee replied to the-e-dealer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If you get yourself a freeview HD box, (I bought mine from Amazon, massively discounted for just ?40.00 or so) you can also get BBC HD (2 channels), plus ITV & Channel 4 in HD. Makes sense, if you have a 1080p or 720p TV. You may need a 'proper' digital aerial to support the signal though. Another local option is to go for a BT Infinity 2 broadband account, and get the BT Vision package, which includes countless additional free on demand TV channels, including the best of american (HBO, ABC, National Geographic, Comedy Central) plus free HD movies. I know they do an introductory deal, but since switching from Sky many years ago, I cannot believe the value and variety that BT Vision brings for just ?14.00 per month (compared with ?50.00++ for Sky). I really have nothing to do with BT, but have been super impressed with the entire Broadband/TV package, with outrageous download & upload speeds, and would heartily recommend it over Sky, unless you are an avid sports viewer. If you want live HD, you still need the HD Freeview box. -
Renata Hamvas Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Keep me posted as to what you think once all the > works are complete Brian. Will do Renata. I would also like to say that I don't endorse Fred's rather rude and graceless comments. The Council does have an enormous workload, relating to all manner of services and responsibilities that often go unrecognised. We only raise the flags and voice of complaint when we feel individually affected in a negative way. So let's not 'put some stick where it belongs', but instead monitor the effects and outcomes of this work, and let the Council know whether it can be considered a success. I expect, on Scutari Rd, that will be a very long wait, unless there is an actual accident. Time will tell.

I have to say that I am astonished (and somewhat pleased) that my original 'rant' has produced such a lively and meaningful debate. Now the humps and raised junctions are in, and, so far, there has been no noticeable difference in the volume or speed of the traffic that uses Scutari Road to avoid the traffic lights at the Colyton/Forest Hill Junction. I also have to say that I find the new bumps quite acceptable, despite having a very stiff-sprung car with low ground clearance, for which speed cushions are far more of a hazard to sump plug/low bodywork. So we will have to wait and see what happens as the bumps are installed into Marmora Road, and also see how the revised traffic management at the Colyton/Forest Hill junction affects use of this cut-through. I do recall Councillor Renata's visit and questions relating to the Colyton/Forest Hill junction, and can therefore vouch for her keen involvement in getting the more concerningly hazardous Forest Hill Road sorted out. There is now a traffic monitor on Forest Hill Road in place, opposite the Co-op, which I assume is measuring the volume and speed of traffic. I'm afraid I do still hold the view that the installation of the speed bumps on Scutari(and the even more ridiculous additional recent bump, that means there are now 3 within the space of just 80 yards!!) is a needless waste of a huge amount of Council money that could have been better spent on more urgent traffic management schemes in the area. What's done is now done, and we can only wait and see what the outcomes (if any) are.

I have noticed at the bottom of Barry Road (the most inviting 'drag run' in East Dulwich for hooligan motorists) a couple of blue signs asking drivers to drive with respect to the residential nature of the road. There are a couple of junction humps at the top of Barry Road, and we know it is crossed by small kids attending the many schools (Goodrich, Heber), yet there are no other measures in place. I quite prefer this, or even simple speed signs, to remind motorists that they are in a 20mph restricted area, than the speed humps that cause additional noise and more erratic driving than a smooth clearway. I have to also say that Renata's post included the following: 'There was a consultation during the last half of August as it whether the speed cushions (there prior to the resurfacing)should be replaced by humps and raised tables be put at the junctions.' This does not suggest that additional humps would be put in on the lower part of Scutari Road (where everyone lives) which was where humps were previously opposed by the residents, which is what has happened - hence my original outrage. I would also like to ask how many responses to the consultation were received, as it is more than likely just a handful. 7 responses would give a 14%/86% spread. Such a low response from a larger population would, in any statistical study, be considered worthless, and disregarded. It may seem like a 'rat run' to newer residents, but believe me this is nothing compared to the chaos that we endured when the major works were carried out at the Reservoir behind Homestall Road, and we had heavy lorries and traffic avoiding the building congestion all using the road. The humps and raised junctions are all now in place, so I suppose we will have to do as Renata suggests, and just see how much difference they make. If there is an accident now that they are installed, will that be considered good enough reason to remove them?
