Dulwich Pubs in the 60s/70s - Lost East Dulwich
ben replied to ben's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
OK - how about expanding the thread to Lost ED - Sean's Co-op and Kennedy's Sausage Shop, wasn't there a Woolworths at some point on LL and I'm assuming that Barcelona had been a pub at some point? It's a bit of a Robert Elmsy type thread but it might be interesting? -

Anyone know where the Samuel Jones Sports club was? The Quo History Part 1 The Spectres 1962 - In the Second Year at Sedgehill Comprehensive School, Beckenham, Francis Rossi teams up with fellow orchestra member, Alan Lancaster and another friend, Alan Key. With two guitars and an organ plugged into one Vox AC30 amp that had been bought for Lancaster as a Christmas present, they start to practise, Alan is soon replaced by Jess Jaworski on organ and Barry Smith joins the band on the drums. Originally called The Scorpions, the band change their name to The Spectres and play their first gig at the Samuel Jones Sports Club in Dulwich, South London. 1963 - While the Spectres rehearse at the nearby Air Cadets base in Dulwich, they meet John Coghlan, then drumming in a band called The Cadets. John soon replaces Barry on the drums and the band start to write their own material. -
Anyone know if any of the ED pubs played host to any pop groups in the 60s / 70s - a nascent Rolling Stones or an early incarnation of Pink Floyd? There must have been musical life here at some point.

Yum Dear Polly, A small ciabatta from the Cheese Block, a little Serrano ham from G&B, some Beaufort Cheese from EDD and a tomato from Sainsburys! I was going to eat it in the garden but it had started raining by the time I'd assembled it all. Not tried the G&B Scotch eggs but I noticed a nice little tartlet thing that I may try tomorrow.

Just nipped out to gather a few items for a spot of lunch and the following observations were made on my journey from the Crystal Palace Road end of LL down to the roundabout and back again Noticed seven 4 wheel buggies, one 3 wheel buggy, 4 pregnant ladies, 5 drivers on their mobiles while driving, shop signage at Somerfield being taken down, launderette next to the Magdala getting a new lick of paint. The shopkeepers in G&B, Healthmatters and the Cheese Block were all very friendly. Weather was mild with a hint of rain.

In a perverse way that's why I like it, the staff are so at odds with good customer service and the opposite of many other shops that it amuses me that they still survive selling what is a fairly small range of stationery. I shall continue to purchase my ream of paper there every 2 months or so -

I'd vote for Plough DIY or Dulwich DIY - both are extremely helpful Have to mention Ralon stationers in dispatches - such an odd shopping experience but always very courteous -

Walks in and dabs a little 3 in 1 oil on the squeaky hinges Plugs in a Dyson and gives the place a good hoover -I'm sure that the Dyson can handle the cheesecake, even the Dutch variety Runs a damp cloth over the skirting boards. Collects 3 large bin bags full of empty Starbucks cups Gives the windows a good polish Tidy the various Sunday Times Style supplements into a pile and places them on the coffee table next to the Bumper book of facts Puts cleaning materials away and walks out with bags of rubbish Heads off to deal with the Music Room
