  5. Dark Chapter reading with Winnie M Li Review Bookshop Thursday, 29th June 19:00 ?5 includes glass of wine and ?4 voucher towards purchase Inspired by her own real-life experience of a violent crime and its aftermath, DARK CHAPTER has been listed by Stylist Magazine among their 'Top 10 Debut Novels of 2017.? The book has received extensive media attention, including The Mail on Sunday, BBC World News, BBC Radio Ulster, RTE Radio One, The Pool, and The Metro. In writing the book, Winnie used crime fiction as a means of exploring the same issue that is also the focus of her academic and activist work: narratives around sexual assault. In this exclusive session, Winnie will be in conversation with her friend (and Peckham resident) Anne Bowers, who flew with her to Belfast for the trial against her perpetrator and has been important part of the journey towards hope, renewal, and impact. 'Brave, raw, and strikingly original, it is a story that will resonate for many years.' - The Daily Mail 'An important and moving book about rape and the long process of recovery.' - Stylist ?Not only highly readable, but also incredibly important? It is also deeply courageous.? ? Wasafiri Magazine http://www.reviewbookshop.co.uk/events-diary/dark-chapter-reading-with-winnie-m-li--8th-june.html
  6. I've not made the decision yet; my husband very keen - he's studying to be an educational psychologist and doing his dissertation on how Ed Physcs might work with children at home and / or support children to remain in school / return to school etc. He's rather steeped in the world at the moment and keen. I'm asking questions to gather more information and insight to inform the decision. I suppose the same question could be asked about school - ie why send your child to school without thinking about / testing other approaches just because society uses schools as places to locate children ... Also I don't see home ed as 1:1 education - lots of groups that teach and learn together. It's much more about much more flexibility, responsiveness, permission to follow the child -- one of the things that research is finding is that the school environment tends to have a specific power dynamic between the adult and the child - ie the adult is dominant and the child is subordinate and this has an impact on a child's creativity, independence etc. and I'm really not convinced that the only approach to a "amazing childhood with life enriching experiences and friendships" can only come from school... But as I say at the moment I'm exploring ... hope that answers the question Anne
  7. My husband is keen to home educate our son. We've got a year or so before the decision about school - and of course it's not a one off decision. I would love to talk to other people who have considered this / done it etc. Anne

  14. Had a great experience with Dave (07932505589) to get a wall replastered; he even ended up having to do less than he originally thought he might and charged me less as result. Room was very clean and tidy when done, wall looks GREAT and feel confident this is the end of our damp problems. Was very clear about how long it would take and how long before we should go back to sleep in the room as it is the toddler's bedroom so wanted to be totally free of fumes Happy to give a reference Anne Bowers

  16. Guys I have to say I have had the opposite experience from Handy Heroes. They've done a few jobs for us - building cupboard doors, painting and hanging internal doors etc. Each time there has been some error on their side, usually when they say something will be done verbally and then it doesn't make it into the spec. Our latest issue (altercation?) has been because they said they would fix our sticking doors for free and then came round so late in the year that the weather meant the doors were ok. They also said they would fix the cupboard doors and are now claiming they only said that because they felt under pressure because I was frustated about the other work. It's sadly untrue and now we have wonky internal doors and cupboard doors that we will have to have someone else into fix. I have to say I would not only not use them but I would not recommend them (and am warning people from my experience)
