local freedom to express yourself
Curmudgeon replied to Mark Arram's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You could express yourself in your cellar or garden shed with the all the other mid-life crises blokes ? just sayin' personally I think that this http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/nov/24/middle-class-dub-reggie-sly kind of answers your question as to why you're not wanted to play "middle class dub" (shudders) -
Help please: bed guard or bed bumper?
Curmudgeon replied to arworld's topic in The Family Room Discussion
you know I think these are one of those child things that can go in the 'not really needed' pile you can put a spare mattress or a duvet on the floor if you want (I seem to recall we did this) but they learn very quickly how not to fall out - it's amazing -
I exclusively breastfed to 6 months - and beyond mainly because I had no issues, pain (beyond first few days) or need to return immediately to work and it was easier than faffing with bottles and sterilising. If any of these factors had affected me I would have had no qualms (or minimal ones) swapping to formula. There can be no judgement in how you choose to feed your children - the people I judge are those who don't bother with their children not those who agonise over every decision. I think, in the main, if you love your children and want to do your best for them - then that's good enough!

Can highly recommend the East Dulwich Youth Theatre - Thursday evenings at the Constitution Club on East Dulwich Grove Helen does amazing work with the children - it's very collaborative, like drama workshops and there's always an end of term production that is guided drama (eg no learning lines, prompted and slightly casual) She chooses brilliant storylines to work with - last time it was Tristan and Isolde and a journey into the Greek underworld - with the children sharing characters as the story progressed

Yes you are right I would be extremely surprised to hear this judging by the huge number of coaches - where do you get this information from?

Supply Teachers at Kingsdale School
Curmudgeon replied to P1971's topic in The Family Room Discussion
May I cordially suggest that you contact your daughter's school and discuss this with the head of year / headteacher if it concerns you. A child's education is a partnership between school and home and I'm sure if you have concerns your child's school will be happy to talk to you about it. -
Free school in South London - Steiner
Curmudgeon replied to dontpanic's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Also read any of the myriad 'Steiner survivor support forums'; read up on Anthroposophy and decide for yourself whether this is what you want - but please look beyond the initial liberal and extremely appealing 'ideals' that do fit well with ED bunting-cupcakery and truly investigate this approach to education. -

Free school in South London - Steiner
Curmudgeon replied to dontpanic's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Many of us do not want Steiner philosophy anywhere near our children so actually I think it would cause far more problems for the area! -
oh what a shame, I quite like the idea of being a freelance parent when I feel like it

oh and I forgot this salient point - parents don't like being bombarded with marketing messages
-
1. safeguarding children is paramount 2. parents don't like being bombarded with marketing messages from sales people / worthy causes 3. using the word 'charity' does not make you above reproach and the information would have to be investigated by any conscientious school down to charity registration and no impropriety with the funds. 4. parents don't like being bombarded with marketing messages

Charter School admissions change
Curmudgeon replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Whilst I'm delighted for those families to the North who have no doubt secured places at Charter I have to say that I am not aware of any child in my area receiving an offer from Charter - despite the fact that every preceeding year has seen Charter offered to these roads as first allocation - this has had a huge impact on a number of families and I am still unclear why the information provided before we made choices, back in October, did not include the slightest hint of an appeal / issue with 'safest walking distance' I do wonder how those to the South (true leafy Dulwich) fared - but I know that we to the East in East Dulwich have been detrimentally affected by this. -

oh FGS There is nothing to be made public - the exams were awarded - the investigation is finished - end of subject, surely! As Carbonara rightly says JCQ regulations insist on confidentiality - this moves away from FOI to individual right to privacy I expect as it impacts on individual teachers and their careers. It is unusual in the extreme that any exam board investigation is in the public arena anyway and it certainly wouldn't have reached the press / forum from the school or exam bodies. This is probably why confidentiality is so very important - the continuing suspicion and speculation affects the reputation of the school and the students. So, whilst I don't wish to stifle debate I think it behoves us all to stop discussing the subject now as we know that the exam results were awarded. The comment made on the murky admissions process is apt though - it's an awful opaque system and should be addressed, possibly on another thread though?
