  1. There has always been a uniform policy but it has always been lightly policed. Fuschia, your son may not have been at the school under the previous Head when the uniform policy was first introduced (I was), and it was the case that shoes should be black, polo shirts and jumpers should be logo (we had a choice of colour initially). I have managed to hand down many polo shirts to my younger child and to other children. With correct washing, they come up a treat and I have only had to throw away a handful over the last 7 years. In the grand scheme of things, is this worth getting hot under the collar about before you have more information and have had a chat to relevant staff? Wonderwoman, there are children at the school with fatal nut allergies and the policy around birthday cake has been shifting gradually over the years so I'm not surprised with the latest change. Lactose/dairy intolerance is not fatal and can be much more easily managed (been managing for 40 years myself to date).
  2. It's a tough one. I absolutely believe in the right to strike but I also have to earn money. Perhaps there is some other way that parents and teachers can unite in action that doesn't alienate parents who would find it difficult to take time off work to support teacher action.
  3. Forms were for a bank account not for lunch money card but glad you've got it sorted. Feedback fromm son is that queues are long for lunch and some kids miss out because cant get to front before end of lunch. We're going to stay packed lunch I think. Encouraging son to take up issue with school council. Hope the boys are enjoying themselves! They seemed happy this afternoon when I saw them!
  4. Used the word 'rumour' because I have not had it validated but was told by a local resident. My intention was to put it out there for others who live nearby to find put more information from local authorities ....so shoot me down but perhaps those concerned should ask questions.
  5. Heard rumour of asbestos in the building.
  6. Husband laughed when I said I liked it but it's still a favourite (thankfully no more children to inflict it on) - Ptolemy. Used to like Jude but feel it has been tarnished a little by Jude Law (I'm not a fan of his), but this is one of my oldest's sons middle names. Also like: Jago Mylo (not allowed in our house as I'm Australian and said before, this is a chocolate malt drink) Zander Oisin (pronounced OH-sheen) Raef Raphael We've ended up with 2 Old Testament names and are often asked if we are Jewish or Christian (neither).
  7. Although not previously very strict on uniform (this may change) it is expected that boys wear grey school trousers/shorts and black school shoes (there are many that are trainer alike if that's your preference) along with school logo polo shirt and jumber. I hope your son enjoys Yr 4. Kids and parents are very friendly there so you should both feel very welcome.
  8. When I was a teenager in Australia, library books were often returned to the shelves by secondary school students doing community support activities. As for libraries in Tower Hamlets, wasn't there a lot of investment from the LDDC (London Docklands Development Corporation) and othe ring-fenced Government monies to the libraries and other community services?
  9. If going to Camber I would suggest you check out the local weather report before leaving London. We once drove all the way there to find that the wind was too strong to even sit on the beach (couldn't even get the wind break up), visibility was low and the kids couldn't open their eyes.
  10. Glad I've found this thread. I was pretty sure the Freeview advert was filmed in ED but this now confirms it for me. It was beginning to bug me as no one else in my house agreed!
  11. How dreadful! My thoughts for all concerned.
  12. So wouldn't worry at this age! Correct when she says it by repeating what she has said correctly but without it being obvious that you are correcting or pointing out her mistake. Making an issue out of it could have the opposite affect!
  13. Definitely a Buba Sling. Worked brilliantly up to 2 years with my monster baby. A friend used one well after 3 for her youngest.

This recipe has me salivating! Can't wait to try it. We often have smoked mackerel in Kedgeree. The recipie is my own version; shredded smoked mackerel cooked peas boiled eggs cooked rice (we always steam) spring onion powered cumin powered turmeric powered ginger powered corriander bit of dry chillie lemon juice Kids have recently gone off it which is a big shame as its one of my favourites - big dollop of lime pickle on the side!
  15. Just came across this article http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/lifestyle/a/-/health/14207771 about nut allergy and breastfeeding. Interesting but I do wish they wouldn't call peanuts 'nuts'! They are legumes!! My brother is allergic to legumes but not to nuts, my friend's son is allergic to nuts not to legumes (ie., can eat peanuts). Lazy journalism?
  16. I know someone near there has a had a generator for a few days so maybe this is part of a bigger problem or it has had to be switched off to fix the problem.
  17. I'm with you! I've asked before but was told that they wouldn't do it (sorry paraphrasing, no offence to Admin!).
  18. EmmaCC, I completely relate to what you are saying and think the kids were a bit out of order. I also remember feeling similarly to you when my kids were young (here comes the....) but the Goose Green playground was definitely designed for a mixed age group and older kids are the group the basketball rings were designed for. My oldest son and I occasionally shoot hoops there and I have to say that there have been occasions when very young children have run under our legs etc and have stopped us from playing because of concern for their safety. As I said, I completely empathise with your post and have no intention of challenging you (certainly not after the fear you put into the pre-teens :-)) but we owe it to all young people to deal with them in a calm but direct way. Back on topic of mother rage, I once confronted a guy yelling at me from his car as I'd gone through a busy intersection and was just outside of the box (marked on the road). I got out of my car (all 9 +1 week pregnant with what turned out to be an over 10lb baby) and *loudly* asked him If he got off on speaking that way to pregnant ladies!
  19. There's a bus strike this Thursday, 5 July?
  20. I think there is one near here but very obvious reasons they do not 'advertise' their location. I seem to remember that there was a poster on here whose daughter worked for a refuge but I cannot remember her name. I used to give things to my midwife who would take them to the refuge. You might be able to try one of the local midwife teams. Kings PICU used to be interested in prem clothes. You could also try the Women's Aid website who have details of local domestic violence organisations who you might be able to deliver clothes to.
  21. Very well done to the child and well done to Heber who I think handled it well. My only very little criticism is that when I phoned the office (mum of Yr6 who walks home on own) they could not tell me whether this was a general 'South London' warning after two near abductions in Kingston or a new incident. As I say, well done to the school - played right I think.
  22. It's been 3 years since I did this but I don't actually remember anyone taking their child (but did take younger siblings - babe in arms). It's not exactly an situation where you can care for your child and speak to teachers at the same time and I don't think there is a cr?che, unless this has changed. If you have the option then I would suggest you go without your child.
  23. I think you'd be surprised about the amount of flexibility but of course it depends on the sector and your salary expectations. I work in the IT sector but for a charity. Salary is a bit below market but I work 24 hrs in three days in the office and 6hours at home between school run one day a week. I've been working part time for 10 years now so have great time management. It takes a lot of planning and I've worked my schedule into implementation etc. There are a hell of of a lot part time, high level professionals in the charity sector and as we are all committed to the cause, flexibility alongside achieving goals is actually well respected.
  24. Have you tried the organisation Missing People? Here is a link to the FAQs about working with the media. I'm afraid I don't have time to read it at the moment but I'm sure there is some useful information to help Patrick's friends and family.
  25. My thoughts are with all of Patrick's friends and family. Someone mentinoned BBC/ITV, have you also tried radio, LBC, Radio 5 Live, Capital, and also, Sky TV?
