Some stats behind the hype re academy chains like Harris
EDmummy replied to Fuschia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Do any of the posters so far have experience of sending their child to a Harris school? I'm no apologist but after having my son at Harris Boys East Dulwich I've seen nothing but care and support given to my child. I'm given many opportunities to talk to teachers and senior management team and am listened to. I certainly don't agree with any dishonest practice but I think it's important for people to hear about the positives as well. -
Teenagers- how is yours today?
EDmummy replied to womanofdulwich's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I reel at the amount of food they can eat! Obviously not at meal times. Eats like a bird when I put food on the table but soon as my back is turned can neck half the fridge! Given up trying to count how many calories he's having. His younger, sporty brother (8) eats even more! -

What a difference a day makes! Homework completed to high standard and no moaning, helping his brother clean up toys and even got a cuddle. Strange creatures. -

My 13 year old's first words this morning were rude and arrogant and it's been downhill since then. The strop he had at Westfield was spectacular! -
Gosh, didn't think robbers travelled so far from their own patch. Sounds more like someone under some police relocation scheme got done in by his old gang.

Hi Mucky72, have you ever been to Dulwich/East Dulwich? I would highly recommend you visit the area and get a feel for the distances to your husband's place of work. Getting from somewhere 3-5 miles away to Kings is a very diferent proposition than it may be in Wales. Traffic is much, much heavier and everywhere takes twice as long to get to. Most schools you have mentioned are good. And, if you find an area you like, it's likely to contain like-minded parents who support their local school (whatever the Ofsted report says - see Heber). You also have an very large choice of private schools in the Dulwich area which I'm not sure you are considering. Good luck.

advice about optometrists for children?
EDmummy replied to DKHfamily's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Gosh, I'm really surprised about Paine and Hunter as they have always been brilliant with my two (who both had/have eye conditions). Diagnosis of No. 1 took a little longer than I would have liked (not a common condition and not a lot of obvious symptoms in 4 year old) but no.2 was much quicker due to more family history. Of course they were both immediately referred to ophthalmologist but subsequent check ups (now for over 9 years) have always been brilliant. Would definitely recommend avoiding weekends if possible as they are always a little pushed for time. -
2s and 3s were an absolute dream compare to early teen! Trying to patiently wait for the next golden moment

Wood has it's own quirks and I would think it would be difficult to predict exactly how long it would take to transform it before you started working with it. My advice would be to be patient and look forward to the artist creating something interesting out of what was a horrid old stump.

Truly offended by Rose's comment. I worked near them when they were in Vauxhsll, now that was rough! Goes to confirm my opinion of them - arrogant!

Wow, that's steep for a UK trip. My son's going for 9 days to Andorra for ?200 more. But, just goes to prove my usual argument to my husband that UK holidays cost more than hols in Europe.

Crawthew Road closing for 18 months

Oh my,I have major house envy. Love modern design and the plans look amazing. On the flip side my thoughts go out to the poor neighbours during the build phase. -

Better be quick! Starts on Monday. Surely a planning application for the basement swimming pool (in ED?! It's not Mayfair) was considered quite some time ago if work is starting in 4 days. -
Has anyone got any recommendations for a cleaning company to do a deep clean after builders? I'm looking for a company that will wash walls, move furniture and clean carpet, dust books on shelves - the whole lot AND not cost a small fortune

I'd suggest just ignoring it completely. I've got one who has always been shy finally finding his confidence at almost 13, the other has been super confident from birth. Same family situation, different levels of confidence.

I would definitely look at booking flights early and then using Holiday Lettings or AirBnB and compare against a package hol. Self catering is v important to us and most of the main package companies don't give us this and enough rooms in the same apartment. Good luck! Stressful now, lots of fun next summer :-)

With those age ranges I'd really get a list of everyone's likes and wants before you start looking for a destination. I know my own children of similar age were less interested in our usual type of holiday and more interested in a bit more of local action (water parks etc). Of course, your kids may not be as annoying as mine :-)

Just a thought but I wondered if there appeared to be a drop in progress from KS1to KS2 because a proportion of able students leave the school at the end of year 3 to go into private education or move outside London to take advantage of Grammar schools at secondary. I know of at least 4 cases myself from one year group.

I agree, pretty blatant politicking. In particular, much criticism of senior management and Govenors plays right into the hands of Gove's academy policies. I'm no apologist and can see room for improvement in the school but I've only seen positive steps taken since the school's last inspection including new appointments in the senior management team. saturdaysmiler Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I can't believe it!! Financial Advisor/Mortgage broker recommendations?
EDmummy replied to Lochie's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We use L&C mortgages (one of the Guardian recommended companies) who offer all services and have great customer services. Now used them for the third time and not disappointed. -
Three year old coughing up foul green liquid

Combination of neurofen and paracetamol and agree if that doesn't work over 24-48 hours (depending on age of course - younger they are, less able to deal with temp) then GP/A&E. -
Both ours learnt by riding on the grass, no stabilisers. Oldest took forever to learn, youngest 2 goes. Persistence is the key and its much softer falling off on grass than tarmac. Keep at it.

Anyone else having a nightmare in the mornings
EDmummy replied to susyp's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Been doing it with my two for over 7 years - I get up much earlier than they do, make lunches, uniforms ready, me bathed. Then wake them up - hubby takes over the giving them breakfast whilst I get make-up on and dressed. Then kids go straight from breakfast table to clothes. If we've got some time left over we use it to read a few pages of a reading book with the younger one, chat about the day with the older. I'm not saying there isn't occassional shouting but that only usually happens if the television is involved! With the afterschool behaviour, I work the back-end of the week Wed-Fri. Even at the beginning of the week we let them completely chill when they get back from school or clubs and take on the chin any bad behaviour that may be the result of tiredness. The main thing is to lower your expectations at the end of the day - I know very few adults who are still perky and ready to go at the end of the day - why should we have that expectation for our children. On your days off, why not have a really fun mummy thing ie., sweetie shop on a Friday; building dens together and playing tea; baking. Good luck. It's not easy and you may try a few different ways to find out what works for you. -
?3k won't get you far either way.
