offering to do shopping trips for elderly/people unable to go
EDmummy replied to zeban's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
@pugwash, we have something almost similar in Oz. Volunteer members of a State Emergency Service, who offer all sorts of help to people in isolated situations (usually during periods of high fire alert, other types of weather influenced situations). A local ED task force could offer all sorts of fantastic support to isolated people locally. My neighbour and I look out for our immediate older and infirmed neighbours but I would definitely be interested in helping more where I can. -
Bcg - does it make babies unwell after
EDmummy replied to reren's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This website has some info baby jabs -
Why are you dry frying the only food she will eat? When you are this age, calories are calories especially when there are so many other high calorie, good fat foods that she is allergic to. I am afraid I am in the camp that getting anything down her is better than nothing. Eating habits of all children change and develop over many, many years. A baby that will only eat one or two foods now is highly unlikely to maintain that as a child or young person (children that do often have some other underlying issues). I am also with Ole on the weighing. Weighing is important in the first few months of a child's life but at 10 half months you will be able to tell if your child is "failing to thrive". As a mother of a very, very, very fussy baby, I am now a mother of a incredibly tall, super strong 9 year old.

I mainly agree with the other posters but if your baby is still having problems with reflux (if also showing signs of irritability and difficulties with sleep) then I would push the GP for further investigations and/or medication that will ease the symptoms. God forbid should some other underlying condition be missed. There is always a possibility and I have seen it first hand! Weight gain and eating, or the lack of, can become such a preoccupation with little ones but it is always reassuring that causes have been ruled out and you can get on and enjoy the wonderful little girl you have. I spent at least two years incredibly concerned about my very underweight child who is now an incredibly strapping, healthy, very tall 9 year old. Don't be afraid to give your child healthy high fat foods. Babies need good fats (natural long chain fatty acids) in their diet as it aids brain development. It is also interesting to ask you parent's about your own early development and to include in your consideration whether you are of slight stature etc., as these are all factors that the 'wonderful' red books cannot take into consideration. Most importantly, forget any long term attitudes you might have to certain foods (not implying that you have any but just a general note of caution) and let your daughter experience as many foods with a variety of textures as possible. I wish you and your daughter well.

any advice about local schools appreciated
EDmummy replied to kindaha's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Two kids in Heber. Love it but do think there needs to be a total rethink on summer born, Jan intake children. Going into a class of 30, nearly a year younger than anyone else can be damaging to a child's self esteem and levels of attainment. Now, don't get me started on the ridiculousness of class size of 30 in the first place.... -
Whats size is the East Dulwich Swimming Pool?
EDmummy replied to james84's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think the max depth is 1.45, rising to 1.40 at the end 'deep' end. At least that is what the markings indicate. -
Half Moon Montessori... do they make an effort?

Perbhaps it was just for variety as other posters say. How about a little fun maybe. -
So, with well over 50% of my street containing residents 70yrs plus, the rest of the residents would need to clear their path? I have no problem doing it for my immediate neighbours, next door and across the road (all bar one over 60) but I am not sure I could do half of the rest of the street on a daily basis. Not sure what I am complaining about really, no one from the Council cleared our street last winter (even though a request was placed because of the demographics) and the predominantly older residents of my street were housebound. I did shopping for the ones I knew and can only hope the rest had relatives or friends who could also help.

East Dulwich GPs compared to others in Southwark
EDmummy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
And we are going to let these people commission services! Perhaps they should spend their efforts on providing a good and effective service to patients first. I have a great deal of concern if commissioning of oncology services were left to a GP who might only see 4 cancer patients in a single year. Let alone those with rarer cancers! -
We tried the aqueous calamine cream with our second child and found that there was no benefit in keeping the pustules moist and in fact made them worse (he was very severely affected with most of them on his scalp, ears, face and neck. Definitely Piriton, bi-carb and, for us, the normal calamine plus lots and lots of distraction.

Great idea and no problem doing it but my street has quite a lot of older people living on it. Would they be expected to clear up? If they don't then how will it work with half the street clear and the rest not? Already we have kind residents ignoring fallen fruit littering the front of their house and the road for the entire late summer/autumn and the stench is horrific. The residents (two young couples) have not cleared up and neither have the council. I would definitely prefer the council to save money on these types of services rather than on essential social services but there are definitely some holes in the idea.

Been thinking of you and Twin II, Fuschia. How did you get on?
-
And please correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't you also be in the catchment area for Heber School? If you have the money and can afford a standard 3 bed in ED then that may suit you more, remembering to check school catchment, then look at that but if it is not as simple then I would say, go for it. We live in a 2/3 bed with downstairs extension (bigger than a half house) and have happily bought up our children here for the last 9 yrs ....although we know we will need to extend if we stay, our kids are in a great school and fit into our odd house incredibly well. Good luck zv2010, ED is a great place to live.

Oh gosh, poor you. You are having a terrible time. I would certainly be tempted to go to A&E but it may be possible for your GP to provide the support you need. If you can't get an appointment, have you tried asking the receptionist to have one of the duty GPs call you at home to discuss the issues? I know my GPs, Forest Hill Road, are very good at offering telephone advice like this. If your daughter is struggling to maintain oxygen levels then they must be able to provide you with some sort of support (advice or equipment). Have the doctors actually diagnosed asthma? Does your house contain any potential allergen that may be excacerbating her briefing problems or do they think it is only viral? If there is a possibility t may be triggered by allergens, have you noted details of when she suffers most, eg., in a certain room, touching pets, eating certain foods? There is an A&E paedatric nurse who posts on here, can't remember her name. Perhaps she can offer you advice. Best wishes to both of you.

Yes, sillywoman. There have been cases where cameras are concealed in the ceilings of shops.

What a terrible thing! Which ATM did he use, the new one, the one to the right of the door or the one at the end of the building? Just wondering if one of them is more susceptible than the others.

Making 3 year old's party go with a swing
EDmummy replied to edanna's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Glad it went well, edanna. We also love Simon! Haven't had him for a few years so good to hear he is still brilliant. -
Been eating there a occasionally for years and both kids and adults have loved it. Never eaten pizza though as my oldest has said "why eat pizza at a place that does not specialise in it" (his cue for suggesting Pizza Express) so, they eat all the other yummy stuff on the menu (they love the prawns, pasta, bruschetta and gnocci).

Apologies Buggie, if I have given the wrong advice. I thought what the OP was looking for was after care advice which she forgot to ask or wasn't given when treated. It was also the advice given to me by a Paeds A&E nurse and also a ward nurse when my children had been separately treated at Kings. Perhaps after care has changed over the last few years.

Would you consider getting private physio whilst waiting for appointment and in such pain (know exactly how it feels being a fellow sufferer). The private physio who works out of the office upstairs at DMC is a magician. After suffering with severe back problems since my teen years (congenital deformity in my spine) he is the only one who can get me walking again when my back goes into spasm. You can usually get an appointment within a day or two to see him and he does evening and Saturday appointments. Even if it is a one off because of cost, I am sure it will be money well spent. Good luck. My thoughts are with you!
-
Poor you and your young son. Horrific thing to go through! I could be wrong here but I think you can ring Kings and speak to the Paeds A&E unit who saw your son to ask for the advice you didn't get when you were there. You will also certainly be able to speak to the ward he was on overnight and they may even offer to have a quick look at him on the ward. Please don't feel bad. These things happen and it looks like you did everything you could do. Young skin heals very well and I would think it unlikely that there will be any long term scars.

Breastfeeding: Snacking 7 week old?
EDmummy replied to radnrach's topic in The Family Room Discussion
PLEASE don't worry what your friend says about her baby and PLEASE don't worry about your baby over eating. A well fed baby has no connection to an overweight child or adolescent. This type of thinking can be very dangerous for your child's development. -
I have never been to St Francis park but whilst of a bus down Dog Kennel Hill today I glanced at the park this afternoon happened to see a rat the size of a small terrier run across the path. Eeeeew! These rats must be managed as they are a major heath risk!

If you think it is patronising take that up with the BUPA health information website where that information was taken from.
