Dulwich Baths - refurbishment timetable
EDmummy replied to EDmummy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I am bursting with anticipation ....perhaps not as much as I was when I first started this thread a year ago! -
second baby early/late - one very unscientific research
EDmummy replied to millsa's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I am also strictly 28 day cycle, mother had all her children almost dead on due date and both mine were over 9lbs. It was the 10lb baby that was about 16 days late. Definitely don't think there is much of a science to it although I was part of a study on length of cervix - were they looking at an indicator for this? -
Loved mine (with the matching footstool). It went to a lovely home (see Fuschia's comments). Ours was one the high quality ones from John Lewis and was worth every penny.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
EDmummy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
@Fuschia, would this include set up and close down costs for the member of staff? I would think it would take up to an hour to set up at the start of day. -

applying for schools in the ryedale 'black hole'
EDmummy replied to ryedalema's topic in The Family Room Discussion
There is no point in registering early as this does not give you an advantage when it comes to schools (at least for Reception). It could be that this year was a blip, who knows. Other than move next door to your preferred school, it is kind of out of your hands. Just put the school you most favour on your application, in descending order and separate applications for surrounding boroughs if you live near a border. Equally, streets that may have struggled in 2010 to get into their preferred school may not struggle in 2011 or 2012. Successive governments have lead us to believe that there is an element of choice but this is just not the case in areas like ED. I hope it all turns out the way you would wish! -
Most famous person I've seen in ED so far....

He often turns up for 'community' events (last saw him a Heber School Summer Fair). He also campaigns on various local issues on LL. Quite sweet really. Didn't know he was a celeb outside this parish until I saw him in the Evening Standard. My son has castigated me for not getting Helen Ledrer's autograph when I see her. He is a big Dr Who fan. -
Hasn't it been beautifully quiet in the morning since they shut down the 2nd runway at Heathrow for repairs.

Newborn hearing screening - does it make sense?
EDmummy replied to Sanne Panne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
With No. 2 turned up for appointed time, waited 5 mins and had test. All in, took about 20 mins plus 10 min bus ride to Kings (special care babe so tested in that dept). Coming from a family where there has been hearing loss and also babe in special care meant I was probably more up for it. Sanne, you will make the choice best for your family. All the best. -
Newborn hearing screening - does it make sense?
EDmummy replied to Sanne Panne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Can it do any harm to go? Your child's hearing will be checked again when it is older but not in such a sophisticated manner (more like the doctor standing behind him/her and whispering) so I would say there is nothing to lose by going. Just because your child is reacting "normally" does not necessarily rule out all types of hearing loss (low pitch loss etc). -
Blue sweatshirt, available from school. White polo shirt with school emblem, available from school. Don't have girls so don't know about dresses but they are blue and white checked summer dresses that a lot of the girls wear. Some girls also wear grey pinafore/sleeveless type dresses. Otherwise, grey skirt or trousers. Black shoes. There is also a school zip up jacket. Some kids wear them, but not all. On quantity - how much do you want to wash! Depending on how messy you daughter is at meal times, then 2-3 sweatshirts. Remember Reception kids also play with a lot of messy play as well. How many polo shirts you get depend on whether your daughter will be wearing dresses and what type of dress. The school office may be open a week or so before school starts. Try giving them a ring. I do know some of the office staff are not term time only. Otherwise, don't sweat. You can always get stuff in the first week. Hope your daughter enjoys Heber. (Edited to make sense!)

No such thing as perfect parents...no such thing as perfect children. Life is not perfect. The bad experience today may turn into the learning experience tomorrow. I used to beat myself up about my struggle with parenting but then realised it was the same for everyone. We are bombarded with images of perfection constantly. They are either lies or fairy tales. OP, enjoy the good times and ride the bad times and it will get easier. With regard to baby SBs diet. Give him what he will eat with little samples of new foods and he may develop new tastes. There are plenty of goods that my mother used to force down my throat as a child that I still don't like, some I have only liked in adult life. You will know if he fails to thrive or becomes seriously under nourished.

Strange Dairy Allergy?
EDmummy replied to Dulwich Born And Bred's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Had the same with baby no. 1. I gave him soya formula when I needed to go back to work and anything and everything else that was a source of calcium. He outgrew the allergy by the time he was about 6. I am lactose intolerant (from about 6yrs old) so I was concerned initially that he had that but as Fuschia says it is unlikely at that age and would have trouble with breast milk. There are plenty of websites which can advise you on high calcium, zero milk diets for infants. Doctors are not dieticians so you may ask to see one as a follow up to seeing the specialist if they do not suggest that automatically. -
Bellybands - are they any good?
EDmummy replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My husband used one when he had a bad back (lifting heavy child way too much) and found a great deal of support. -
A goose has just flown down my street!!
EDmummy replied to Loulou's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Used to get a pair of geese flying over our house every morning honking loudly. Haven't heard them this year. Think they fly between Peckham Rye Park pond and Dulwich Park lake. I love the noise they make. -
All mine enjoyed it (47, 9 & almost 5) but EDdaddy thought it was a bit dark for a U rated film. Still think the first was the best.

Mr. Martin Palmer... (we have a letter addressed to you )

Know that one well. Asked my primary school teacher what it meant. He didn't tell me but did blush a lot. -
Any ideas for a good beach to drive to?
EDmummy replied to Fuschia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I love Camber Sands. Large white sands, shallow paddling water BUT conditions can be variable. The area can get very windy so it always worth checking out the local wind direction etc. A friend recently recommended Botany Bay on the Kent coast. Never been there but she goes frequently with her two. The down side of getting to the coast for day trips when you live in London is the length of the drive and the number of other people who have had the same idea as you (heavy traffic). No way around it other than moving or immigrating! -
Pregnant woman smoking down Lordship lane!
EDmummy replied to Ligaturiosity's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Purely from a point of accuracy - where did HH say the father in question was African? Did I miss this? When I read it I thought of many countries where this type of behaviour is not question, only some of which are in Africa. I will not comment on the original OP because I think she may have had enough of other people's views by now. -
Harris Academy (new boys school for East Dulwich)
EDmummy replied to macroban's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I am a little ambivalent about whether my boys go to a mixed or single sex school as what I want for them most is a high achieving school, reasonably close to home, where all of us feel comfortable. If that is single sex or not doesn't really bother me. Certainly one of my children would probably be OK with a single sex school, the other is too young to tell yet (5 yrs old and still many friends of both sexes). Sadly, I have not yet done any research into Harris ethos to comment whether this might be the right choice for us but it may be the right choice for others. With regard to the abolishing private education, there will always be those who believe that what everyone else has is not good enough for them so if private education were abolished they would just find another way for attaining exclusivity that only money can buy. Wish I could buy private education for my kids but not going to cry over it and instead use my energies to make them as well rounded as possible. -

@toast why wouldn't local people send their boys to a single sex school? Are you a parent of boys? -
BCG timing - does age make a difference in scarring?
EDmummy replied to Sanne Panne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think it is probably a skin type thing. People tend to scar differently. I had my BCG when I was 32 and although the scar was prominent for the first year, 10 years on it can be hardly seen. Neither of my two were offered BCG and I have not requested. Does make me slightly worried.
