  1. Best-Before is a recommendation only from the manufacturer as to when the food is (obviously) going to be at it's best - it is not a requirement to cease selling or consuming it after that date - though any sensible shop will not do so, and EHO's assume individuals use good judgement at home. Use-By is a legal requirement where shops are concerned. Consumers are advised to use their best judgement when eating or drinking items that are past the Use-By date, and show careful consideration; meat, eggs and vegetables are hardier than fish, and manufacturers often place extremely cautious Use-By dates on food as they are aware many people will consume it after that time. The relevant legal details... https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/69316/pb132629-food-date-labelling-110915.pdf
  2. Oh wow. I mean, just...wow. Even by forum standards that's a pretty sanctimonious post. As I said, you asked a question, didn't like the answers you got, ignored or twisted other posts to suit your position, and then finally make that comment about Syria. Really? Childish. Don't start something like this if you aren't prepared for people to disagree with you. It makes you look silly, which I somehow suspect you're not. Anyway, I'm done with this. Think what you like.
  3. Didn't say you over reacted in the store. I'm saying you're over reacting in general, by thinking that...oh I can't be bothered. You're not worth it. Wait till Waitrose take over the old police station, maybe they'll treat you the way you expect.
  4. I used capitals because you plainly didn't read my first post properly, so I wanted get your attention. I've never worked for them, hardly even shop there. But you asked if others thought you've over reacted, and almost everyone has said they think you did. So it seems to me you don't like the answers you got. Nothing wrong with returning product for a refund, but yes, people seem to think you're making too much of this.
  5. Right - PAY ATTENTION Buddug... " Find eggs past display by date by 5 days (and you mustn't mess with eggs)" DISPLAY-BY DATE AND USE-BY DATE ARE NOT THE SAME THING. Do you understand that? A Use-By date is legally required, as part of Environmental Health legislation. The Display-By date is the shops own choice. It's them deciding when to keep stock on the shelf till. As you can see, Sainsbury's operate a SIX DAY GAP between the two. Now, that they've left them on the shelf past their own removal date is a problem for them. BUT... It does NOT mean they have broken any laws or put any customers at risk. Because they haven't. So stop implying that they have.
  6. They weren't selling out of date eggs. The use-by date is tomorrow - therefore the eggs were not legally out of date, and you are incorrect in stating that they were. The display-by date is for the supermarket - it is not an indicator of when the eggs will suddenly become diseased. Egg use by dates are always massively on the cautious side anyway - sellers are aware that many people will keep them for several days before consuming them, therefore they leave a lot of leeway. The same is true of meat and veg (not of fish, of course). Yes, massive over reaction by you. 'Mounting inconvenience'? 'Petrol costs'? These are your issues, not the shops. That said, it sounds like the second manager should get a refresher course in how to deal with awkward customers. And may I recommend SMBS for avocado? They usually check them at the till before ringing them up.
  7. They do. They tend to target places like Chinese and Indian restaurants because they think there's a higher liklehood of illegal workers in them. Whether they're right or not is a different conversation.
  8. > > this place is crap. Crap name & food. boring. > unoriginal. overpriced. no imagination. smells of > oil. when is a restaurant or new bar ever going to > open with some imagination. And your high quality suggestions would be...? Would love to know how you could do better! (I wait with baited breath)
  9. "Seems some people on here clearly have very high standards and are used to the finest Italian ice cream..." There's a lot of places selling really good ice cream in London these days. Maybe that's why people have high standards - because it's easier to find really good stuff. Nothing wrong with that. Personally I don't rate Oddono's - but that's just my view. Each to their own. Ice Cream Union are excellent, Gelupo on Archer St, as stated above, is unbeatable - though the prices reflect that. There's a new place in Borough Market called 3Bis. Again, great quality, price is ridiculous. You get what you pay for. Oddono's use bulk production methods - that will screw with quality when it's compared to the top end stuff. Also "ingredients of sorbet (dairy intolerance) and it had emulsifiers, trans fatty acids and other crap in" - that's another indicator of using large scale/low quality production. If it had any other emulsifier than xanthan or carob gum then it's bad, and there should be NO trans fatty acids in proper sorbet. Good sorbet is fruit, water, sugar and one of the gums to hold it. Nothing else.
  10. I'm sorry...you're going accuse others of making personal comments, without noticing how guilty you've been? Of course you are. See you later troll boy, don't hurry back.
  11. As I said, conversation over. No debate possible with someone like you.
  12. No one likes a show off... :-) Look, I'm not impressed by that statement - if you can't see how you've been rude then that conversation is over - and I think you're pretty aggresive frankly, but hey - it's your problem if you want to be like that. I just think you make yourself look bad. I think it's a shame when you have good points.

Fair enough that he's standing up for it, but he descends into insults and condescension of the type he accuses others of and then says "who, me?". Takes some big brass ones to be that arrogant and hypocritical.
  14. Wow. That's some serious work Mel's doing there. Moving the whole kitchen will require a massive change to the place. I worked there very briefly many years ago, and have to say that's a good plan. Mel must be doing well if he can afford this. Good luck to him. Glad one of ED's longest running independents is doing well enough to justify this. That kitchen was always a nightmare to work in!
  15. UDT - you may well be right (on this issue at least) but my God you're pretty unpleasant with it.
  16. And it's gypo, not jippo. If you're going to be incredibly insulting at least spell it right. Have you considered talking to them, rather than venting on here? Might have a better result, just saying.
  17. That's unusual in my experience. Been with them all my life, and I've never known it be like that. Hope things aren't changing there. I've usually been able to get seen within a day or two, sometimes even with a specific doctor.
  18. Once again Fox you're being obtuse and you know it. Pubs like those being described certainly did exist, and you know full well that one up side to the legislation of recent years surrounding H+S and so on has been to makes to make pubs safer. The era you describe was one of the landlord answering to no one, which can make for problems. HOWEVER...I agree that the corporatisation of the pub industry has overall been very bad. Hey, when you're right you're right. The big chains took away the soul of many places, and the tenanted side of things? Don't get me started on how evil the pubcos can be *coughEnterpriseInnsareabunchofevilwankerscough*. That's why I left that industry. But I'm not sure changing the old opening times in itself a bad thing. The continent has later hours and nowhere near the late night drinking issues we do (I generalise, but the point is mostly accurate). Perhaps that speaks to more of a cultural issue. FWIW I don't think TGE should have those hours. LL causes enough issues.
  19. "I do think that Admin is possibly being overly cautious by adhering to the instructions meted out by one or two businesses. But then I don't know the possible ramifications either. We supposedly live in a world of free speech. If someone on a forum writes something that's untrue then surely it's that person who could be sued for libel. Am I wrong?" This whole thing piqued my interest, and from what I can gather BOTH the poster and forum are liable. Most likely the rules governing the rest of the media would apply. If someone doesn't like what a journalist writes thru can sue both the journalist and the paper, and do so quite easily in the UK, where our appallingly relaxed laws allow for the worst kind of 'libel tourism' - but that's another matter, although it's no doubt a factor in Admins mind. However, I also think it's worrying that businesses are able to be 'blocked' from any discussion, good or bad, if they want. In a recent case the involvement of the police merits the action (as it should), but if they weren't called in, there would be less grounds to cease all discussion. I've lost track of how many businesses get trashed to one extent or another on here. I hope they recognise the value of community interaction and the benefits it can bring (as some have) and don't play hard (as others have). I also hope Admin knows where to draw the line on this, otherwise there will be nothing left if any business can delete negative feedback placed in the public domain by spitting their dummy.

"William Rose sre actually very good value butchers and well worth the queue" You see, the other stuff could be true but this one is just too far fetched!
