  1. The best way to bust a hipster businesses cool is to turn up in smart pinstripes for coffee with a copy of the FT. This is known as the "false 3rd wave" maneuver and will have them scuttling off to Catford in no time.
  2. I've hung up my festival hat (proverbial, not one of those horrible jester Claypole numbers). First was Glastonbury 2000 and after that giddy high they've all been pretty crap since if I'm honest. Worst was Coachella in California which is policed by undercover DEA and beer Nazis. Worst in UK is clearly the mainstream powerhouse V which is mostly full of daytripping stockbrokers and people who still buy CD's in Tescos. Liked Benicassim tho when its started. I'm also off the gear which I guess makes me boring. I can live with that.

A bitter sweet victory through eh?
  4. I forgot to add - advertise it on this forum. It works brilliantly for prospective tenants and landlords alike. But don't forget to donate something if you're quids in.
  5. See here: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,963741,966076#msg-966076 I personally would not pay an agent for lettings. Fix everything before you go, buy decent boiler and land lord insurance and take out anything that a tenant could break. Find a good handyman and give him a small retainer before you go. You'll still save. Where are you off to if you don't mind me asking?

It always really pains me to see England stuffed like that.

No need quids. Wales 20 England 3
  8. Comedians who aren't funny anymore, whether due to the passage of time, fashion or general enlightenment is possibly a better take? Step forward Lenny Henry, Steve Martin and Jim Davidson.

    David Bowie...

Stevie Ray Vaughan plays the amazingly soulful but brief Albert King style blues licks on Let's Dance. He was asked to join Bowies touring band at that time but turned it down to forge his own career. I love that connection - both are amongst the greats.

Scotland v Wales will be a belter. I expect the taffs to beat us by 6-8 points though.
  12. He's probably just expressing the annoyance shared by millions that the building trade is full of shysters and cowboys. If you've been done over it does feel like that. A good architect reduces the risk of that but won't eliminate it entirely. thats why "Can anyone recommend a good but decent value builder" is most requested on here. Hens teeth.
  13. Our architects quote (you mean for the whole project right?) was close - they tend to factor in all of the extras that a builder wont include in their quote. Examples: Party Wall fees, specialist structural engineering and extras of your choice (new kitchen etc). If you are suggesting that an "architectural technician" ie someone who is not a qualified architect OR a builder are more likely to misprice jobs I don't think that would be fair. Building is not an exact science so some variation is always the case.
  14. Who was the bloke who used to sign off all his threads with "Hugs..." I feel we need him back. And we all need to head down the Draft House with "The Fox" for a medium rare hamburger. ;-)

So I cooked Jeremy's chilli verde on Saturday. He didn't quote measurements on quantity so I ended up with excess sauce and mixed that with some steak mince, onions and beans to make a beef version to go alongside the pork shoulder. With loads of fresh coriander blended in it tasted great - very Mexican. Kind of like what you expect Gus Fring to be cooking up at home in Breaking Bad.
  16. Anyone know of any caff that does proper chips ( as opposed to synthetic frozen bag of long thin potato paste)?
  17. Good topic. I see that "Johnnies" has now taken over the Lane Cafe on Lordship. Not sure if its the same owner/offering but it's reference to a US diner style thing on the signage reminded me of what happens when Cafes get gentrified. Clapham had loads a long time ago but their nappy valley mainfare Northcote Road is now full of offerings with names like "Crumpet" and previously, "Boiled Egg and Soldiers". All offering organic sausage and free range eggs with a 30-40% uplift in price to reflect that.
  18. Basically a good shishhhh Huguenot.
  19. Some have gone deep on a supposed subtext of white middle class vs black street culture integration. I just see two dad's hugging each other.
  20. I've always liked them. They nail the awkwardness of going out to buy middle class lavender before getting the fried-chicken with phone-disco bus back through the South London ghetto nicely.
  21. You mean....gasp....you cant buy radiccio in East Dulwich?
  22. This thread started off with some recipes that require 3 hours prep, overnight resting and 1 hrs cooking. I'm guessing a lot of us don't have that much time so I'm always up for new quick simple recipes that I can make in 30 mins when I get in late most nights. So many of those quick cookbooks are total bollocks because their time starts after all the prep and in reality I cant be ar$ed after 14 hrs in the office. And another thing.....I've always admired David Carnell for happily admitting that he screwed up making Raymond Blanc's Coq Au Vin. Recipes that are in reality impossible to make or which you've screwed up would be a decent cookw@nk thread? And finally....if you've tired of trying to choose which versiuon of spag bol to make then this little read is great: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Perfect-Essential-Recipes-Every-Repertoire/dp/1905490836 Whilst it looks like twee bollocks the author has distilled all of the best features of each to give 68 staple recipes from mash to roast chicken and poached eggs and for some reason I keep going back to it.

Along with some homemade "dad" cocktails. (altho not a Dad you know what I mean)
  24. Ok....so there are now three possible routes for this thread: 1. General agreement that more positivity is needed with endorsements of good local pest controllers 2. A FULL ON animal rights debate led by a local vegetarian (yes I know humane traps are available) 3. Something about awards for local businesses, Surma and the like. As you were...
  25. TED you wally, give them a break and perhaps go and do something more interesting in the real world FFS? Didn't you know that K&O Pest Control is the most loved pest control company in all of SE22 and Colin is champion mouse trapper? They've been recommended consistently on here for years and offer a customer focussed service needed that is also very good value. I know because I've been one. Who would run a business round here and openly engage with the forum when there are so many massive bell-ends waiting to question or lay the boot in? Some positivity would be great.
