  1. Wow, sorry to hear this, hope you're not too shaken. What a nasty piece of work this guy is, I hope he gets what's coming to him.
  2. paella - 'meaty rice pudding'.
  3. The left needs to move away from a narrow focus on identity politics. Walter Benn Michaels makes some good points here: https://www.thenation.com/article/what-is-the-left-without-identity-politics/
  4. It's difficult to see what this march might achieve. Demonstrations tend to work best when they have a very clear and specific demand. The problem with too many of these marches, is that they're extremely diffuse and tend to be focused on broad principles rather than a set of specific actionable demands. They also seem to encompass many different agendas. The stated objectives are "to protect and stand up for fundamental values that have recently come under attack namely human rights, equality, dignity, safety and health." But where is the 'how', I'm not sure marching does it (except in the very literal sense that one is standing). I support all those ideals, but then many who voted for Trump would say they do to, that's the problem.
  5. Thought this was a measured and well written 'piece' on the response to May's speech and specifically her declaration that we will be leaving the single market http://stephentall.org/2017/01/18/what-vote-leave-said-about-uk-membership-of-the-single-market/
  6. 4 years does seem pretty unreasonable for such a project to still be going on. Have you spoken to the owner - what's he say?
  7. I think it's possible (albiet rather unlikely) that there could be a change of mood in the country on Brexit. After all, it was a very narrow victory for Leave, so it wouldn't take a huge shift in sentiment for the 'brexiters' to find themselves in the minority. In time, as inflation increases and people find the cost of living going up faster than earnings, it's easy to see a scenario where recriminations lead to calls for a rethink. Like I say, i think it's probably unlikely, but not impossible. If there is one thing that 2016 taught us, it's that the seemingly far fetched can happen.
  8. Brie can be renamed 'big dairy lee'
  9. Great Britain can be renamed little Britain and the United Kingdom, the disunitited tax hvaen
  10. This is interesting: https://www.theguardian.com/education/2017/jan/19/grammar-schools-lose-top-spots-after-league-table-shakeup It would be even more interesting to see how independent schools performed on the same measure (how much schools advance their pupils? grades)
  11. Personally, I think inequality matters. Of course there will be disparities in wealth in a system of incentives and positional competition, that is indeed inevitable (in fact essential). But there is a point where the gap can become too large, such that it is counter productive, inefficient and potentially destructive to the system.
  12. Loz - you're talking about an extreme and unrepresentative sample. When people say it's more difficult for those from the poorest backgrounds to get to the top', that's generally true. I doubt Rendel literally meant 'the top 10 richest people in the world'. But you know that of course. To suggest that as long as a small number of people in the top 10 list come from 'humble beginnings', then everyone should 'be happy' is mischievously reductive.
  13. [deleted - posted twice for some reason].
  14. Come on Loz - looking at the top 10 richest people in the world? It's a tiny and extreme sample. It tells you almost nothing about social mobility generally.
  15. The phrase 'tory scum' is used almost exclusively on this forum, by those complaining about the use of the term 'tory scum'.
  16. ???? The most notable thing about this thread, is the unironic, vitriolic, political tribalism, of those railing against vitriolic, political tribalism.
  17. UK has a very high level of income inequality compared to other developed countries, but of course it's good news if the gap is reducing. As noted above though, it's not a straight forward picture and of course wealth and income are not the same thing (and if one looks at assets the picture is very different). I also saw today, Oxfam suggesting that the World's eight richest people have same wealth as the poorest 50%.
  18. So have you got a link to the researc?
  19. pop9770 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Questions > How much slower do speeds need to go if at all or > should they go up on roads like this? I think 20 is fine - but not when you have speed bumps. Then it is a case of 20 down to about 5, back up to 20, down to about 5 etc. This just leads to huge frustration, which also IMO, often leads to people flooring it when they do get an opportunity. 20 mph, actually enforced by either average speed cameras, or (sharp intake of breath) real traffic police. > Is it just a few speeders the same ones who speed > on every road how to stop them? Yes. They're often the ones in big vehicles that barely notice speed bumps, or commercial ones that don't care about the damage to the company van and consider bumps sport. The lack of any real enforcement (cameras / police) means they drive with impunity. > What are the accident figures? see http://www.crashmap.co.uk/ > What other speed reducing options are there? Chicane / priority to one direction, average speed cameras, real people stopping dangerous drivers (not just a machine measuring speed) > Buses speed everywhere why are they not > electronically restricted to set speed limits many > are driven my maniacs? Good question. Even better one - why are not all vehicles electronically limited in order to restrict their speed to the road they're on (hardly beyond the ability of current technology). Why does anyone need a car capable of 130 mph and 0-6 in a few seconds when they only drive it on public roads?
  20. Oh and some pretty hardcore pruning in the spring in order to encourage new growth.
  21. .
  22. I had similar problem. Found that regularly feeding it with some liquid fertiliser helped it revive.
  23. I meant their 'metro' services, which I think was the original plan http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/transport/12113029/TfL-to-take-control-of-Londons-suburban-rail-services.html .
  24. The street lights in ED are ridiculously bright. They were upgraded a few years back and now everywhere if floodlit. It's not great for birds. light pollution isn't taken that seriously unfortunately. If you walk around Dulwich Village and surrounding streets, it's lovely at night - their streets largely still have the old, yellow lamps... it actually feels like nighttime.
