Exactly this. This is a suburban railway, primarily serving those commuting in, or through town, from outside the city. Southeast London needs some tube lines, or some proper 'metro' services. Perhaps if TFL take over we'll get the latter at least. This part of London is woefully underprovided for compared to the rest of the Captial.

  6. If you want to upset him, why not speak loudly in Spanish and keep trying to pay at the bar with Euros.
  7. Not really the point though. Just because some people prefer the restrictions, this shouldn't be the way they're implemented.. Just by the inaction / incompetence of national rail. If a road is to be closed it should be done as part of a delineate decision, taken thoughtfully and in consultation with the public.
  8. Has anyone got any news on this? Is that it this bridge?

  14. If you buy a ticket and plan around it, then the train company should liable for your losses as a result of any cancellations. Not just the pro-rata cost of a season ticket. If you need to get a cab, in order to make an appointment, then they should pick up the cost. Trains would soon start running on time, if there were real and serious costs imposed. Personally, I think the trains should be bought back into public ownership, properly funded and run with the dual aims of providing good value for the taxpayer and a reliable service for commuters.
  15. This is one of the most ridiculous threads I've read in a long while.

If you start down this route of reasoning, you quickly get to the 'I shouldn't pay for X, I don't use it' argument. in the end it leads to everyone just paying for the things they need, i.e. it undermines the whole idea of universal, public services. Start means testing everything and you undermine support for the system, services suffer and the less affluent end up being a lot worse off.
