binary_star Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > You're officially over your white guilt??? > Yes thanks Binary-Star, your links are informative. It seems the link you led me to is largely critical of the concept of "white", or as I prefer to call it, collective guilt. That was actually refreshing because I have never subscribed to the idea. Judith Katz, the author of White Awareness: Handbook for Anti-Racism Training, is highly critical of what she calls self-indulgent white guilt fixations. Her concerns about white guilt led her to move from black-white group encounters to all-white groups in her anti-racism training. She also avoided using non-white people to reeducate whites, she said, because she found that this led whites to focus on getting acceptance and forgiveness rather than changing their own actions or beliefs. Commentator Sunny Hundal, writing for The Guardian, states that it is "reductionist" to assign political opinions to a collective guilt such as "white guilt" and that few people on the left actually hold the views being ascribed to them by the conservative writers who expound on the concept of "white guilt" and its implications.[8] Hundal concludes: Not much annoys me more than the stereotype that to be liberal is to be full of guilt. To be socially liberal, in my view, is to be more mindful of compassion and empathy for others. You might be surprised to know that I don't hold Germans born post 1930 responsible for the holocaust, or expect them to feel guilt over events that occurred whilst they were children or not even born. Likewise I don't hold Rwandan Hutus or Burundian Tutsis responsible for the genocides that occurred in their respective countries, when they weren't even alive. I certainly don't expect them to embrace the concept of "black" guilt, if there is such a phrase. I certainly hope not. The slave trade is a stain on the history of Europe. Everyone in this country is taught that in schools and 99.9% of people would recognise it as such, that is what is important. However, don?t be surprised if people don?t feel guilty about it and by the same token, don?t assume that means they are blas? about the siginficance of it. -

Edit to say this is in response to Huguenot.... Yes I am slightly messing about but I am 100% interested in an answer. I guess my reference to liars reflects my (and who knows, possibly a lot of other peoples) lack of faith in the integrity of politicians and the political system at large. Yes, marking your candidate choice in order of preference, that's easy. BUT the counting process afterwards still remains a mystery for a lot of people, maybe even most people. I think the YES campaign have slightly messed up here by not explaining it as well as they could have done, instead focussing on why FPTP is "bad". "In the first round the candidate with the least amount of votes is eliminated." I assume here you mean: the candidate with the least amount of 1st choice votes? I'm not being obtuse here, I genuinely don't (didn't) know how the counting works, but your explanation makes sense. My fear is this hasn't been communicated properly to enough people. Yes, it's a well known fact that Cameron was elected leader of the Tories through AV, and yes it makes his championing the NO vote look mighty lame.

Whilst ticking various candidates in order of preference is of course very easy to grasp, what I feel hasn't been explained is how all the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc choices manifest into results. E.G: if Liar X gets 27% of 2nd choice votes, is he or she more popular than Liar Y who got 54% of 3rd choice votes, assuming that both Liars had an equal amount of 1st choice votes?

My thoughts exactly Bob, but a lot funnier!

He's definitely not dead, everyone knows you don't take the Bins out on a bank holiday.

Just to put these conspiracy theories to bed, this is what really happened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiDyrkU0WAQ&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_305892

His body was carted off to Afghanistan (a landlocked country) before then being dumped at sea. So I'm assuming it was largely intact and not blown to shit. I just think it was a dumb move because it just fuels the fire for future theories.

However I think burying him at sea could prove costly in terms of future conspiracy theories. ie He's still alive and being kept prisoner in the States. When they've caught other big name targets in the past, they've made a point of parading the bodies....

Royal Wedding Street Parties (Lounged)

You haven't lived until you've pogoed to Brothers in Arms. Graywallpaper - if you will insist on continuing with this tedious act at least try to make it more convincing and a lot funnier. Epic fail. -
Nero, you don't come across well at all. I live on the stretch of road in question. The relatives hosting the wake were good enough to come round and knock on everyone's doors and explain what would be happening laters. They were still obviously upset by their loss, and they caused no disturbance whatsoever. I was in all night and didn't hear a peep, forgot the whole thing was happening. I thought the fact that so many people rallied together and came round to be very positive. I hope they gave her a good send off.

It's interesting that a thread about the housing market has turned into a thread about LL Carpets. Seems like there are some strong opinions out there. They fitted our carpets and bathroom floor recently and they certainly didn't cover themselves in glory. The wrong carpet turned up from the warehouse, skirting boards were damaged by the fitter and our bathroom floor was a joke from start to finish and took over a month to fit 4 sqm of rubber flooring. To be fair they knocked some money off but we won't be rushing back there. It's a shame because I want to see local businesses succeed and they have a good shop with some inspiring products in there. Communication within the company seems poor and some of their fitters aren't up to the job, especially the one who spilled screed all over our bathroom floor and mopped it up with our hand towel, which then went missing. I also used Meaby & Co a couple of years back and wasn't very impresssed. Expensive and didn't show much initiative when the paperwork from Southwark, signing off building regs on my flat could not be tracked down. I nearly lost my sale because of this but luckily I contacted my previous solicitor used when buying the property. They still had a copy of the missing paperwork and I was able to rescue my sale. Why it didn't occur to Ian Smith to do this I don't know. He wanted to issue a letter of indemnity, at more expense to me of course. Looking back, it's obvious I was pushed towards Meaby by an estate agent from Haart, who was probably on a cushy backhander no doubt.

Virgin is supposed to have really poor customer service too. Generally only becomes a decent deal when you sign up for tv, phone too. Who's your mobile provider? I'm with o2 for my mobile, I also use their broadband and it's been great. Also cheap because I'm already a customer. Orange do something similar....

Sound system / loud party / jump up on Tyrell Rd
Willard replied to Willard's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yeah, did all that. It wasn't the first time they'd visited there that night so they were laughing at them basically. It finally ended just before 5. I'm just glad that I live on a different road, about 100m away. With windows shut (double glazed) I could still hear every word the guy was shouting down the mic. Imagine the poor guys living next door. Part of me almost admires the sheer brazenness of it all. I mean if you're going to throw a party, and all that. The other 98% of me just thinks: what selfish tossers.
