  5. Never mind the wine, what about the ale? There's one in the Actress called "Beaver". Avoid it like the plague, tastes disgusting, and no it's not served in a furry cup.

I did some filming at a couple of free schools recently: the Toby Young one in Hammersmith and one near Stockwell. I was really impressed by what I saw. The kids were mega disciplined, the teachers said they seemed to actually like having stricter boundaries where there is an absolute zero tolerance of any disruption in class. The teachers seemed really passionate about the schools. The curriculum offered things like Latin and other languages kids wouldn't get to learn otherwise. But what impressed me the most was that there is no selection process: if you fall within the catchment area and you apply, you're in. Explain to me how that is divisive, especially when the catchment areas are inner city areas like Hammersmith and Stockwell. The one in Stockwell is planning to open a boarding school for it's kids down in Sussex. All the kids we interviewed said they'd be up for going to it as they have hardly, if ever been to the countryside and wanted to experience life outside of a city. It kind of does my head in to think about the philosophical and moral gymnastics that some left wing/liberal minded people have to perform in order to object to these schools.
  7. Sounds like a massive over reaction to me. Final destination falls into the dark comedy horror genre, although the plane crash scene at the beginning is pretty vivid. It is only a 15 too, not an 18. Showing that film to a 13 year old might raise an eyebrow but its hardly shocking - hence I think your banter was totally fair enough, especially given the fact you mention you often joke together on FB. I watched much worse than that at a younger age (all be it without my parents knowing). It's not as if he was going to watch The Human Centipede, so it's hard to understand how he took your banter so seriously. Ask his Mrs why he spat his dummy out, if there's any thing you need to be made aware of. And then send her a link to this page. And then report them to social services.
  8. I'm due to upgrade my phone and I'm thinking of joining three to get a good deal on an iPhone which I can tether. I'm currently with O2 which I find a bit pants around ED, especially in my house where it drops calls quite a lot. Anyone here on three and how do you find it? Ta, W
  9. Small brown bins should be fine as they get emptied weekly. If you have the occasional garden waste too you can collect paper bags from the library. Or ask a neighbour with a large brown bin...
  10. Might be down to the unseasonably warm weather...Punters might be having barbecues or going to pubs with big beer gardens. The LL pubs aren't exactly blessed in terms of outdoor space.

  12. I'm not worked up or in favour of advertising hoardings. The "weeping Jesus" sign off from my previous post was meant as tongue in cheek, but fair enough you can't always judge tone on a forum. What I am in favour of is the right of a business to subsidise it's building costs by putting up an advert on it's scaffolding, providing it doesn't interfere with the quality of life of individuals or other businesses. For the record, I don't drink in the Bishop and I don't know the owner. As DJKQ has pointed out, a temporary hoarding is not physically detrimental to a building. A temporary hoarding is also not detrimental to the look of temporary scaffolding. Saying you don't think it will look nice isn't going to cut the mustard with the council. If it's not doing any harm, and it saves someone a few quid, and it creates work for a design team, creates work for the company that prints it, creates work for the guy who puts it up, good luck to them. Some people are arguing that we are bombarded with advertising left, right and centre. Let's not forget that this website supports itself with advertsing. No one seems to be complaining about that.

Thank you Karter and Jeremy, can't believe how worked up people are getting over some scaffolding. Weeping Jesus...

  15. How do you know it was definitely not a firework? This time of year is when fireworks go on sale. When lived down the road in Camberwell kids would be letting off bangers from mid September to mid November....
  16. James, I find most of your posts helpful and insightful, but this has to be the biggest load of bol$$%ks I've ever read on here. How many windows do you think the owners would like to block out with a permanent hoarding? There's plenty to chose from: http://dulwichonview.org.uk/assets/uploads/2010/07/19899621_3a48ebc9d5-400x300.jpg
  17. Sue, it will be up as long as the scaffolding is up, ie as short a time as possible as scaffolding is not cheap. How about a nice Abercrombie ad campaign for you? Possible Billboard?
  18. Loz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Nimbys are people that want the facility, but not > in their 'back yard'. I don't want it, nor would > I wish that hideous thing on anyone. No, Nimbys are people who don't want the facility, especially NOT in their 'back yard', ie neighbourhood, community. People getting all hot under the collar about temporary advertising on temporary scaffolding? Pretty sad in my book. You need to have some sort of safety mesh over the scaffold anyway because its on the main road, who gives a f**k what colour it is or what's written on it. It's temporary, while the scaffold is there. Get some perspective people.
  19. Temporary measure. Hides ugly scaffolding during refurb. What's the problem nimby's?

  21. Interesting that East Dulwich station is called Lordship lane station. Would be great if you have more of it...

  23. I thought it was great (especially the lip syncing fish!) I love simple ideas that are just done really well. Good marriage of song and visuals. Shot on the 7D by any chance?
