If this was a builder or taxi driver it is hardly front page headlines. Maybe a small section of a local newspaper. So 1. RSPCA taken action 2. Police may take action 3. Club will take action, but would have been sensible to suspend him straight away Main discussion point is why he did it, and why on earth it was filmed and put on social media Even in terms of animal cruelty it wasn't that high up the list, there are far worse stories on animal neglect. Cut the casual racism

Isn't that the lyrics of a Steve Miller Band song? Or was it Killing Joke (for the old punks around us, who would hate MOR/AOR stuff like Steve Miller).

Welcome to the Lounge all, some in particular! You'll find this the place to go for broader debate.

Was planning to start a thread since I saw a recent article in the Grauniad about maxing your broadband. My PC is old and may get 20megs (which is fine) rather than twice that on other devices in the house, still falling a little short of the 50 that BT say you should get. Getting fibre optic made things so much better, than the Talk Talk deal I had before, and couldn't have worked remotely on this. Work gave me a 4G box at that earlier time, but 4G on T-mobile aint great. https://www.theguardian.com/money/2022/jan/24/how-to-speed-up-your-broadband-internet

From my limited take some hard line anti vaxers don't need a lot of excuses, they've had a go at Gove because he is (allegedly) a sociopath, RM because he is a toff stuck in another age (it's not good that they targeted his kid, but please don't make him a mini me) and Starmer, because, umm, he's a bit wet.

Told you so (as I said in the 80s and 90s when were busily privitising our utilities). Well it is all Thatcher's fault. And Major And certainly Blair And Brown And Cameron And now Johnson May gets off as she didn't really do a lot beyond the disastrous path to a hard Brexit. And bad dad dancing.

'Cyclists now have a higher power over vehicles' What total bolloxs. Perhaps HMG should actually try to inform the masses what this is all about, rather than expecting the Sun to do it. Funnily enough in another life we used to Sun to get nice succinct messages over to the consumers, as it has a lot of influence. Like the chilled TfL vid, this sort of thing can make me a little embarrassed about my behaviour. Sometimes I am angry, sometimes I try to politely tell people to cycle, drive or walk better, sometimes I am just chilled. At my worst I have very gently ridden into people who walk straight across me, perhaps not great behaviour. And even worse after shouting, and doing an emergency and got no response shouted I'll run you over next time. Anyway a handful of times, and something not proud of despite a smile on my face as I type. I'd prefer to say for every bad experience I have a dozen good experiences. Well chilled out as after posting a Norma Waterson track on EDF it's gone to some chillaxed Norther Soul on Youtube. Not that this is relevant to the thread. And you can comment on chillax on my thread on new words that have got into our language. -
There is a serious issue about size of property, and poor insulation. Many in my area have or are extending their properties, both to increase living space and increase value. With poor return on cash investments property has been seen to be one way of protecting your savings. I'm sure I started a thread on this some time ago - half the country don't have enough living space, half (subjectively) too much. Few from my observations put the money into better insulation, either due to cost, low return on investment, and the practicalities. I started a thread on the governments green strategy but sadly didn't capture much interest.

It all about sharing road space. For some reason many, mainly motorists, some of which could be described as entitled, don't get it. The Highway Code has, in my lifetime, always given equal priority to road users. Sadly because some with metal boxes think otherwise, it has to be revised from time to time. Governments have also often given lip service to this. Wouldn't it be lovely if more motorists got points for hassling other road users. Most road users to share happily with others. Too many don't. PM me if you want a safe driving lesson, a safe cycling lesson, and if you have a motorbike I can also give you a lesson on that. Not yet branched into scooters, but should expand into safe pedestrianising. -
A Judas Priest song played backwards always works for me, or from the 'Shining' red rum, red rum, RED RUM, RED RUM When we were young some kids were into motorbikes and would try to make the sound of them (more like flatulence)

Actually thinking back on what I said, this PM acts very differently to others. I have an idea make it happen. Now perhaps in a business at the cutting edge this is the way to get things done. But in government there has be some due process, accountability, record keeping etc. I expect some of what is done doesn't go through the normal channels. Or the PM would "like something", and suddenly that becomes the collective vision, rather than a proper analysis of the options, impacts, reputation and the like. Only hearsay I hasten to add. No eyewitness account.

The stuff on moving rescued animals out of Kabul is interesting. I would expect that these decisions were made by the Foreign Secretary, or junior ministers/official under his/her authority. Or perhaps at ministerial committee (ie COBR), or Cabinet. But not PM in isolation. But no smoke without fire. The fact that I use COBR (Cabinet Office Briefing Room) rather than COBRA (a snake/British beer pretending to be Indian) shows that I know more than the average journalist about process in government. And Indian 'style' beers.

In deed, always informative and amusing, and wrote for many people as well as performing.

I've had some involvement in Covid response, not at the seat of power and not a significant role. No state secrets. And it certainly isn't a secret that government have done considerable research into the attitudes of the public, comparisons with overseas etc, to help guide the level of response, voluntary vs compulsory etc. This showed that the public generally supported measures, most would wear face coverings, social distance etc. A shame they didn't survey their own ministers and political appointees.

I worked in an office for many years. Each birthday was different, some would bring in cake and leave it in the tea point (no office party), some would go down the pub (in the old days lunch time, later years after work), some wouldn't tell a soul, some would take the day off. Very very rarely any sort of gathering in the office, maybe a big birthday. Yes in the great scheme of things it is relatively trivial, but still stupid under the circumstances. In one respect it is a shame that Partygate has distracted us from other failings on the PM, not sure how much Dom is orchestrating this, and if so why the drip drip feed. Fascinating article on Dom, and the PM, in the Grauniad. Worth a read. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/feb/06/inside-the-mind-of-dominic-cummings-brexit-boris-johnson-conservatives

In honour of Paul Carrick, who appeared on a repeat of Pointless on Friday. Not going to do Mike and the Mechanics - Ace played locally and there is a poster up which includes one of their gigs at the Newlands/Ivy -
Planning to transfer some ISAs into this organisation - bit freaked out with the on line application that included a commitment to invest every year until I inform them otherwise. I'm not after financial advice (which I doubt this forum can provide) but just your general experience. Cheers

I expect that the announcement on freezing of the license fee and the possible changes to the funding model are playing to the populist agenda and that middle England sees the BBC, and probably even more C4, as infiltrated by lefty metropolitan types. With the strap line about hard working families, those on pensions and the like not being able to afford the fee then (a) means test the fee (b) help the same families out who are even harder hit by the massive rise in energy costs. I expect few would notice/mind the increase and personally I am more bothered about hikes in postage costs, particularly overseas. There is of course an argument on what the BBC and C4 are there for in terms of public broadcasting and how and whether they should be able to make serious money as a global brand. For example bidding for hyper-expensive sports Relying on costume and other dramas (hardly have time to catch up at the moment. Fly on the wall, reality programmes on BBC 3, low end comedies and more, confusing Dr Who plots and more bally cooking and gardening programmes And what is the need for C4, which I hardly watch any more. Me? I'd not have a revolution or slash the budgets. I feel/expect that it is the best TV brand in the world and should continue that way Here's a petition. https://www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/protect-the-bbc-morethanalicence

A league that I was treasurer for disbanded a few years ago and will be donating the reserves to charity. Suggestions welcome. Probably a sporting based charity helping special needs or similar.
