  1. They seem pretty friendly there so give it a go!
  2. He's the architect of both LTNs and ULEZ so got something half right. Otherwise......
  3. Catching up on posts I'll repeat what I've said many times. The poor decision was moving to gas and neglecting nuclear. Thatch was a big supporter of nuclear, then did an about turn in 1989. Before that she had planned new nuclear build every year, Sizewell B was underway, to be replicated at Hinkley Point (approved), Wylfa, and a Sizewell C. Involved massive state funding, and it was just too easy to abandon nuclear and build new generation CCGTs. Energy efficiency, insulation and the like also went in the back burner. We don't have an energy security issue, we still have too much dependency on gas in particular with the hike in wholesale prices I never bought shares in privatised utilities. I expect we know many who did, for a quick buck.
  4. Blair got a shock with the 3 Fs, fuel (protests), foot and mouth and flooding. This showed how poor wider planning was across government and understanding of the wider consequences. The Labour government overhauled government's planning and preparations - little is said about gas shortages in winters in the mid 00s (bad weather in the North Sea and loss of long term storage due to an incident) or the threat of renewed fuel protests. That was because they were well managed. Sadly Labour has failed to remind the country of massive imprisonments in energy security, as new interconnectors were built and LNG reception facilities. From 2010 we lost the plot in particular planning for novel infectious disease. Fortunately experts were in the room for some of the difficult decisions over lockdowns, time will tell how much the experts were at fault for the failure to act earlier. I expect most on this forum have far more love for Jonathan VT than the current PM. On the down side Labour did not make good decisions on nuclear new build. I was involved in some of this but I admit to an anti-Tory bias. I thought some of the Big Society stuff was OK but subsequently dropped. Some of the environmental ambitions are good, but lack of substance and Truss will sacrifice much of this. The two challenges to future generations are climate change and geopolitical instability. These don't feature on the current leadership race. If Rory Stewart had been leader I hope the country would have gone in a very different direction. Truss will end up being even worse than Johnson. Quite a challenge!
  5. Peckham Town's pitch over t the road s just like the Serengeti. They've done the right thing, but they are not posh and entitled. And I expect Peckham haven't the funds to pay a large water bill.
  6. Skate park was buzzing when I just cycled past, as was Horniman with the festival. As for an entertainment venue only ever went in the Garden, which was a plus. No idea why it closed
  7. Once in ,60 years is hardly a regular event. I expect occasionally a car frightens a horse but I don't see any call for culling cars. Although I'd happily impose refresher training on drivers! Let's keep it in proportion rather than knee jerk reactionary.
  8. Bally hell Cat. I know you like being controversial but surely you are not an apologist for the fossil fuel industry There's being growing evidence on climate change since the 70s but the industry did their best to discredit this, helped by their neocon mates Some have rebranded, other are still pure evil like Exxon
  9. France is an interesting case study. After the war they didn't want to be dependent on importing fossil fuels. They also wanted their own nuclear weapons capability. So went almost full on nuclear power. Planning was fast tracked. Sweeteners were no doubt handed out in affected areas. The UK had a similar but more modest programme. Thatch was a great fan, partly due to the then power of the NUM, but maybe also as a a science graduate. Then she ditched nuclear and supported gas fired power stations. Contributing towards the mess we are in now. Her about the was also due to privatisation of the sector, due to nuclear liabilities and the large capital investment. Subsequently we lost a generation of nuclear engineers and our ability to build nuclear power stations, relying on French investment and Chinese engineering/constellation. The Germans made even greater mistakes. I dont just rant here, I wrote to government asking for an apology over botched energy policy. I know more about the subject than the civil servant who drafted the reply. Not that I am having a go at them, having to work with the worst government in my living memory
  10. Labour government
  11. UK has reasonable security of supply. The Labou to government put in additional infrastructure as our North Sea fields became depleted. Long term storage was due to our gas fields so we could fill during summer when demand was less and wholesale price lower. Issue is global prices not supply
  12. Just like New York, it's so good I have to post twice. Just like New York
  13. Biggest criminals are successive governments for privatising the sector and failure to support better insulation of our homes Good points though
  14. Many thanks. It's s in Reading but I am sure there is a decent digital signal there and broadband. When we lived in Sydenham the analogue signal was so good I'd joke you could just put your finger in the air to get the telly. It is not so great here even though you can see the Crystal Palace transmitter. We have an aerial in the loft and although it's not great plenty good enough to get all the free view channels and complemented by broadband/internet TV. Satellites I recall being from pre internet/digital transmission when it was a choice between cable if you had it, or a satellite dish At least that is my take
  15. It's helpful to share. Firstly please inform Trading standards in the area that they are registered. From time to time they will take enforcement action. Trading standards, or more likely citizens advice, can help on trying to get money back. Trading standards has been sadly savagely cut in last decade or so. Not deemed essential by our politician's
  16. Bit dismissive of my question of font, but that is typical I thought others would be more interested and some more knowledgeable than me. A quick bit of research suggests Helvetica, a Gothic type font. There is also an old English, and a mediaeval. Suppose that all related to us being a pretty Germanic nation after all. Fascinating eh?
  17. Yes, that is in deed the pub, but they were not welcoming and threatened to call the old bill. I had a similar experience at the local garage and post office. The cemetery was more wco.ing but not sure I need the services yet.

  19. It's a reasonably rare name and you can find her on Facebook or Google. I didn't say this earlier as the thread was not exactly going anywhere. Debit cards, Oyster cards and the like are simply cancelled and replaced. But this has reminded me of finding house keys nicely labelled with the address. Great for returning but fortunate that I was not a thief or knew one I could sell them too.

  21. Also once it went viral it just wasn't the same. I still pay homage to the first Pret, although the staff there don't know anything about the savoury croissants that were one served only financial services. Had the same problem trying to get Guinness recently in the Moor Park Hotel on Wood Vale
  22. Oh so 2010s Bob. Too recent to be retro cool. I've long since moved to Turkish style pizza at Pide in Catford aka the next East Dulwich. You heard it from me first.
