  1. There is a department at Southwark Council set up to wind you up. Doing a great job. More important things to worry about surely? 😉
  2. Perhaps it is time to move on. There are many things wrong in life but apart from venting your frustration you won't change things on LTNs. Council elections show that this was not a big enough issue to sway Perhaps contact the private schools and ask them what their sustainable transport policies are and could they do more to discourage parents driving kids to school, or at least make sure they had a car full. I was surprised how empty the Village was last week at 3 30, Southwark schools had yet to break up so even with charter, Dulwich and Bessemer primaries most traffic appears to be private school parents. Dulwich college has no restrictions on parking near by.
  3. I'd say the less pretentious part of SE22. You are close to the Plough and the cluster of shops. Interesting walk up Dawson Heights. And the Castle pub, the least pretentious pub in the area. Nice walks up Sydenham Hill too! I'm teasing about pretentious. Well maybe.....
  4. Loads of points for discussion. Making active travel more appealing Vs discouraging short car journeys. Getting drivers out of their cars and using public transport. Improved cycle infrastructure - I don't routinely use CPR but it is chocka in the morning and doesn't feel cycle friendly. Sharing space, many drivers consider themselves superior to bikes, the highway code gives them equal priority. Speed control. More confident cyclists, many won't like cycling with traffic, and that extends to parents who cycle with their kids on what are fairly cycle friendly roads (eg Dulwich Village). Eons ago on the previous LTN thread (and on Lounge threads), that government needs to take a greater lead, joining up health benefits, better air quality, climate change and improved urban environment. Spending time in Bromley yesterday reinforced this, where car culture is king.
  5. You've actually defeated your own arguments Peckham has a number of roads with special arrangements for cyclists. One ways and no through roads where cyclists are permitted and motorised transport not. They don't have cameras, are not called LTNs, Southwark do not issue fines, and the denizens of SE22 don't get all angry But thanks to you and others for giving me some new material to comment on rather than the usual anti-LTN stuff. There's a discussion on proportionality that I referred to earlier worthy of a separate thread on the Drawing Room.
  6. Don't care if is the council or police that fine you for speeding. Don't care who keeps the money. Simply don't do it. I would draw the line at private companies enforcing this. As with all enforcement it needs to be proportional. A job for central government to challenge car culture and this sense of entitlement. But none will due to it being likely vote loser. I was in Bromley today, It's crying out for 20 mph throughout.
  7. Thinking out loud I wonder what the conditions need to be to compulsory purchase, as Southwark did with the listed concrete house, a great job.
  8. Southwark are building properties. As far as I am aware they don't own the Grove so why blame them?
  9. He's third favourite, although I expect getting a 100 MPs may be a challenge If it went to members he'd be nailed on. Being talked up in the media
  10. Lord Frost, prime material for Krishnan Guru- Murthy
  11. I hope many of you enjoyed this wonderful fairground, when it visited Belair Park and Peckham Rye. Some wonderful family memories. The final weekend is in Reading this Saturday and Sunday, it's up for sale as a whole with a hope that it will move to a static site. The grown up family visited it last Saturday (this was expected to be the final weekend, but they have given it another weekend). Much of it is powered by steam engines, and the vintage trucks, caravans and even the old Morris ice cream van are wonderful. Carters generally did not attract the nasty element (can be a lot of bother at travelling fair grounds). The music selection reminded me of my teen and pre teen days when the visiting fair two or three times a year was something to look forward to. https://www.carterssteamfair.co.uk/
  12. Judging by the sale of Guardian's Suella Braverman appears to be referring to East Dulwich. Views? A light hearted thread to take us away from all the current troubles.
  13. Whilst it may be therapeutic to share frustrations with others, as well as contacting the powers that be, also try the company. I did this with Zip car once and they sorted things out. No doubt too many bikes to sort out immediately but why not share ideas about a deposit scheme?
  14. Beat me too it Sue, aquifers and rivers are low and take some time to replenish. Forecasting is not an exact science, there being a large number of natural variables. The need to better forecast the weather (for governments, businesses and the public) helped lead to the early supercomputers so had wider benefits. Weather professionals will be lower paid, than say many in finance. There is a good article here https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/what/technology/supercomputer The UK Met Office, a government agency, is one of the best in the world, Sadly this was put to out to tender for our national broadcaster and the French company meteo won. I often compare the two. I've had the pleasure of working with the Met Office on pollution modelling and as you can tell do not like casual criticism.
  15. Nah, can't knock Bumble, Zippy et al Talking about that anthemic late 70s rock Rainbow, Richie Blackmore and the like.
  16. What are the songs/genres that you loathed then loved, vice versa, and the stuff that would make you leave the room (or worse, see below)? As a kid I hated disco music, not soul music from the 60s and 70s but Chic, Shalamar and the like. I wouldn't have been seen dead listening to folk, country or soft rock. Years later after re-education including the numerous BBC 4 documentaries I'll happily listen to much of this. There is some MOR/AOR and prog that is still to much. The person whose music I detested over the decades was meatloaf, and yet another generation discovers Bat out of Hell (I wont go below the belt and talk about the late Marvin Aday's politics). I was pretty mean many years ago leaving a vinyl copy of this in the sun to wharp, I'd similarly leave the room if Rainbow was played. Like much of the music of my youth through to 30s when I lost touch with pop/rock it dates quickly.
  17. Typical, you are responsible for Brexit and the p off for a megabucks job. Oh, sorry confusing you with an ex PM or two.
  18. It very much still exists but you can no longer phone them. Found that so useful in the past. COVID of course changed arrangements.
  19. Deffo need a leaving party It could go in what's on section
  20. I expect there is a sizeable proportion of the population who still in favour of him as PM. I don't believe he is a great liar, not always convincing. But sadly that is what many expect of politicians. As a caretaker PM he would boost the Tory vote
  21. I like those countries where you have a rack on the bus to take bikes. Now we are talking about integrated transport. I feel a letter to my MP is due. Please feel free to add other suggestions. My list includes secure bike parking at stations and the high street, bike storage on trains, and physical Vs electronic speed controls in urban areas particularly relevant to the Brenchley Gardens race track.
  22. Mail article www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11295473/As-MPs-plot-bring-Boris-Johnson-channels-inner-Winston-Churchill-takes-golf.html Not that I'll read it Still interested in locals who may think it is a good idea.
  23. During the discussion today was that Johnson, despite his many many faults, would be doing a better job, (although I expect that most never wanted him gone). Of course Truss was on a platform of Sunak stabbing Johnson in the back, and many obviously agreed with her. Anyway trying to stay neutral, so if you can put all your views on his premiership to one side, is there a scenario where he could take over in the short or longer term. Are there any out there who actually feel stronger that he is the man for the job?
  24. On today's Jeremy Vine programme several people called in with this view, I see that the Telegraph shares this opinion too. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/10/14/time-bring-back-boris/ 16% voted Tory in the local ward. So there must be some of you who think this is for the best. (A bit of balance in regards to other threads on this site) [i've posted elsewhere, as another caller to vine said, he was not Boris to the masses, but the PM or Mr Johnson. The same caller also said he was an odious man, but that is not the point of this thread]
  25. Short to medium term plan, Truss to screw up country, Labour to get in, make a mess eg infighting, squabbles with Scots, underwhelming leader, and Tories to come back even more right wing. Meanwhile big business, hedge funds etc to continue to benefit.
