Southwark Council's services

Sand12 - you've hit the nail on the head with your reference to austerity and the harm it has had to our public and social services. Shame on Cameron and Osbourne, and the Lib Dems who should have put a brake on the savage cuts that affected the vulnerable the most. In all the discussions on local authorities you need to remember central government's role. Johnson effectively acting like his own dead cat has created mass memory loss about the government of the early tens. -
Government position on shared mobility is nothing new but their record is pretty poor to date. Most money being thrown at electric vehicles. Echoing the campaign New Labour, old danger, I'd say new Tory, same old Tory, as middle England don't get this yet (and it seems many in SE22). But valid article, something I have banged on about for ages and done my own part too. I've got a lot of time for academics like Phil Blythe, ex DfT Chief Scientist, this presentation is worth a read: https://www.ciht.org.uk/media/10567/prof-phil-blythe-presentation.pdf (a little long...) And a shorter presentation:

A serious incident has been reported. We can all express our outrage at the driver's behaviour, and our sympathy to the cyclist. Road rage, criminal damage etc are all crimes that have to be investigated by the police, hoping that the cyclist did report this, and as posted others have also reported evidence. I'm not sure why some feel that this is the opportunity to speculate about the police or go into a rant. If you want to do that start a thread on the Lounge. I'm no fan, but not sure why you have to go into a knee jerk on this thread. I've suffered from road rage but never to this extent. I tend to try to be in a position to get away from angry drivers. The majority of cyclists and drivers are courteous to each other and happily share road space. I reported a near miss from a driver weaving in and out of traffic on the Brixton Road many years ago. They almost took out a cyclist, I stopped, encouraged the cyclist to report and then drove (I'd usually have been on my bike). The police knew who I was talking about (it wasn't your stereotypical bad driver) and the cyclist turned up shortly afterwards to put in a proper complaint. My one issue now rather than then is it was easier to report incidents at a police station and talk to officers. Doing it on line of course brings efficiencies.

Funnily enough I thought of this before seeing the above post -

If this is serious then why haven't you called the police?? Serious question. -

Is this thread for real? Obviously you have never worked in a 1990s office with nylon carpets, every time you touched a metal filing cabinet you'd jump. One colleague would charge himself up by rubbing his sole against the carpet then put a finger near your nose and the spark would jump, like a spark plug in a car. Earlier generations would have nylon night wear and sheets, you can imagine all the crackles and sparks between couples at night. -
Good stuff rocks. I thought I had no more value to add to this thread - I can't comment on the data in Southwark, nor to do I believe that they are corrupt, incompetent or in the pockets of those living in the leafy boroughs. But now you have turned to cycling policy, well that is a different matter. I am long exhausted on e scooters, see every thread in the last year or two. But cycling, always happy to join in. Although this could appear as if you are trying to get the discussion lounged, something that has been leveled at me for some reason in the past. But rather than go on about bikes, you have unwittingly put down the argument on why there does need interventions on motorised road vehicles, in particular private drivers. So why have we got segregated cycle lanes, rather than encourage shared use? Drivers and unacceptable dangers to cyclists. But surely, bikes are road users and have just as much right to be on the road. Sadly 95% of drivers don't see it that way, and not only have issues with the bike being on the road and the 'need' to overtake it, they don't pay much heed to speed limits either. A responsible government would take on the road lobby and try to reverse 60 years of pro-car policies, and the 'entitled motorist' but that died a death under the Labour governnment. So the reward for drivers for their lack of ability to share road space with cyclists is to lose road space through segregated cycle lanes. And the same can be applied to air quality, carbon emissions, essential users such as blue lights and those with mobility issues. How many drivers say - I drive less because I want to reduce emissions and/or the road should be there for essential users? I expect the number is a small fraction. So we have to have hard interventions. I couldn't have explained it better myself

Cheers Rocks, I think I'll get a t-shirt made up. In fact I'd happily receive one from you for Xmas. Happy to meet in the Court Lane area once lunchtime.

Appears another Trojan horse for anti LTN. But in a positive spirit - your pavements are in much better condition than us peeps over the border in Lewisham And you seem to have better investment in libraries. Not done any other comparisons. When people here whinge about having to pay, for example, for garden waste collection I have no sympathy as most of us can afford to pay and we shouldn't be subsidised by those who don't use or need such a service. -
Hearing the PMs tribute to Allegro Stratton tonight made me think of the game played on Radio 5's Fighting talk where two contestants have to defend something that is clearly wrong to most reasonable people. But sadly the PM has form here, defending Cummings for his road trip, Hancock for his amorous behaviour and Owen Patterson for his misdoing. A crass example but it is like me saying that Gary Glitter changed the face of British popular music and brought joy to many, but was a deviant preying on young people. The first part is factual (as is the second), we cannot and should not rewrite history, but I doubt I would ever be giving him (GG) a public tribute.

I just like looking at their headlines when I am in Lidl, as they clearly are on another universe "hooray hooray, the PM is great, we are wonderful, etc etc". But even they are not towing this line this evening, even the Express cannot champion Johnson at present. Yesterday's headline was about how we would benefit zillions for being outside of the EU and cutting red tape. Can't find it on line but this one from few weeks ago is similar: https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1528859/brexit-news-free-trade-economy-red-tape-eu-Nile-Gardiner Anyway what is good about the Daily Express? It isn't the Daily Mail. And nobody reads it in any case.

skimming recent posts (life is too short to read all of them), much is being made about the impact on the elderly and those with disabilities. Obviously a valid concern. But I expect that many vehemently against LTNs are principally concerned about the inconvenience to themselves. I expect that this does not apply to many posting here I hasten to add before I precipitate ED outrage. And me? I can sleep soundly at night as I work to help some with disabilities, have supported accessible transport whilst reducing my own carbon footprint. Anyway, a personal view.

I've managed to get hold of the original PM script: "I've ordered an investigation into this matter. If I find that rules were broken then I will act swiftly. It would be unacceptable for government not to follow national restrictions in times of a crisis" Sadly I reckon some fourth columnist, perhaps a Mr Gove (fictitious name) interfered with the script. Of a gremlin.

Glad that you are pleased with it. If you want sympathy then use an appropriate thread title, and cut out the sarcy/passive aggressive posts. I've had a few spills but you will be pleased to know always cleaned them up. I expect the person who did the damage doesn't read this forum, so it is unlikely to own up. So you are whistling in the wind a bit. Whoops, now who is being a little inappropriate.....

My word it is dreadful, nowhere to buy reasonably priced meat, fish and fresh veg. Oh wait a second, we are talking Lordship Lane rather than Rye Lane aren't we?

Curiously titled thread, a bit surreal. I've lived all round the country and never heard of this. In times gone by it was traditional to stand outside your house in respect as the funeral courtege passed by. A discussion for the lounge. Although in these days of street Whatsapps with all the inane chat that this leads to I expect that many will pretend that they were greatest of friends when a neighbour pass on.

On and fine criticism of many of your community (lemmings) - surely you can do better than that....
-
Lib Dems totally given up on their green credentials. If you really support the environment then vote Green.
-
DKH, it is all Southwark's fault and those evil LTNs, they are incompetent, corrupt and in the hands of those living on the leafy streets. Anyway, now that is out of the way, not sure why this thread is going on about buses, which I am a fan of anyway. But as others have noted most cars sit there all day on the road without moving. Road space that could be put to better use, dare I say even scooter lanes? Bring on smart/connected transport, mobility as a service, where it will all be joined up with an autonomous pod (if we choose not to cycle/walk/public transport/community car club) will take us to our transport hub for our onward journey, simply with a swish of your phone (or perhaps a flicker of your eyes). And private car ownership, beyond a small number of enthusiasts, will be over.
-
Oh for heavens sake, please don't bring the Tories into this, whatever your beefs are with Soutwark Council. Tories are fundamentally pro choice (ie car) and against intervention (ie protecting the environment).
-
It's actually traffic restrictions/cycle lane/scooter lane for a new LTN. You've heard it from me first. London Borough of Southwark strike again.
-
You tend to adapt to the place you live. If you are young and it is a quiet area, in the central boroughs of London you are likely to have reasonable access to more exciting areas. In the same respect very sociable areas such as Shoreditch and Camden, are no doubt always noisy. The popular areas may also be expensive to eat out and drink. There will be some leafy areas that are attractive to older people including those with families, but may be a bit dull for younger people. But maybe some will adjust to the inner city country life. I've lived out of London in a pretty country town but it felt like the middle of nowhere and very parochial. I'd also baulk at living in the outer boroughs but others move there for family reasons. Lots of horses of courses but as a non-native Londoner I've always enjoyed the mix of people, that said demographics are not that broad in these areas and becoming increasingly less so as gentrification continues (a double edged sword)

" Is there no sane person in this mutual adoration society? Shame on Southwark council and its councillors." Amused me greatly as this thread comes across as a bit of mutual admiration society at times between many of the posters. Anyway, to be serious. Rocks you have gone on here, and now on the scooter thread, that Southwark should be investing in on street infrastructure for electric vehicles. Most of the money is held by the government through the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles (previously known as OLEV). TfL is the coordinator for this in London. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/grants-for-local-authorities-to-provide-residential-on-street-chargepoints/grants-to-provide-residential-on-street-chargepoints-for-plug-in-electric-vehicles-guidance-for-local-authorities. Early funding under the Go Ultra Low Cities Scheme granted ?13m across the whole of London https://www.londoncouncils.gov.uk/our-key-themes/transport/roads/gulcs No doubt some councils will spend some of their own money on some recharging, which will be fairly modest. And I was asked whether boroughs can introduce road charging schemes. They can't. Again that is down to GLA (TfL being part of this). You could also argue that the better off benefit from subsidies for EVs, certainly the EV car grant does, but government should kill this off and focus on charge points and moving to a sustainable position (note early adopters of electric vehicles were generally wealthy empty nesters, more often that not using this as their second vehicle)

Witness to car accident - near Dulwich College, 22 Oct

Report to the police. If all else fails the Motor Insurance Bureau, that covers hit and run, uninsured drivers and the like may compensate you. It did me. https://www.mib.org.uk/making-a-claim/what-we-do/ " Reducing uninsured driving: MIB is at the heart of the fight against uninsured driving. This is a problem that seriously affects the lives of those involved in road accidents and costs millions of pounds every year" Added what to do in case of an accident - if address of the other party has not been given then it is an offence, get the old bill to do something about it https://www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/answers/what-to-do-if-i-am-in-an-accident
