  1. Pedestrianised my local high street years ago, before that a congested A road went straight through it. Catford and Lewisham both have pedestrianised areas, well away from the stations, which aren't conveniently located. Question is how important connectivity is vs streets for people. I expect for some the convenience of the bus stop and station collocated is useful for commuting, which may or may not be good for the local high street (depending on how much trade that brings in. Here's some of the world's best pedestrianised areas - wouldn't Peckham be great if it was like New Orleans for example! https://www.afar.com/magazine/the-10-best-pedestrian-streets-around-the-world
  2. Cladding for high rises is not an issue for the older housing stock - obviously it is a wider issue https://www.gov.uk/guidance/building-safety-programme. Would expect local building control will vary from council to council and also will be informed by national guidelines and policies.
  3. Thanks all for the really helpful views. My Aunt took the decision a few years ago to get a live-in carer. For her a care home is a last resort. She saw how quickly my mother deteriorated in her care home, but this is not a fair comparison as my Aunt has much better mental health, and care homes will be suitable for many at this age. I'll talk to the local Age UK office, who were very helpful in getting her reassessed by Harrow Council.
  4. LV. Was with Direct Line but left a few years ago after getting some points for a silly error, Direct Line have a big loading. I've got house insurance with Churchill so I am not anti Direct Line.
  5. And no distractions, as per mobile/tablet.
  6. Can't even blame it on pacts - there are still a few eg Cyprus/Greece, Russia/former Soviet republics, but I think a lot less of this, this year. Due to the mild piss take by Terry Wogan, progressed by Graham Norton, it's seen as a bit of a joke/camp night out in the UK, potentially career ending. In other countries it is taken more seriously and the songs are better publicised, across Europe.
  7. Well not intentionally, the point was that closing Rye Lane to through traffic (mainly buses) should not lead to significant congestion elsewhere. I also see this thread as more opportunity by some to 'bash' Southwark, continuing many of the threads on the East Dulwich section. I'm not anti-bus, and use them, including occasional commuting on the 185 (before 8 when the school run made it too congested) into Victoria sitting reading my book glad that I was not on a crowded train. 1. I like the idea of pedestrianising shopping areas. It's been common for a number of decades. I'd like the street to be re-laid to both improve both the aesthetics and how the space is used/managed. 2. I've acknowledged the need for access for those that need it, but feel that others are using this as an argument just to oppose new traffic measures 3. I've discussed cycle access, I don't see any easy alternatives to cycling through Rye Lane. It was my commuting route for 20 years and I will continual to carefully use this route. I've seen little conflict between bike and pedestrians, of course sadly it happens but please don't blow out of all proportion. 4. Rye Lane was blighted by a few selfish shoppers/drivers, who parked on the double yellows, and blocked buses. I raised this with Southwark, but got nowhere, I was disappointed that the parking attendants seemed so impotent. But I did get some good data from Southwark about enforcement through an FOI, which showed a significant number of FPNs were issued - although didn't seem to deter the double yellow lane parkers. This road was supposedly no access to cars but never felt that way. I am glad the illegal parking has stopped. 5. I was also disappointed that the curb on final part of the Rye, going down to the crossing, is so damaged due to buses mounting the pavement. I took this up with Southwark and TfL but got nowhere. I'm a user of Rye Lane as a shopper, for occasional socialising and for transport. It's good to chat about the issues. I'm not campaigning on this either way.
  8. Alice, there are plenty of threads elsewhere to show your displeasure at Southwark, the Dulwich LTNs and your chip on your shoulder about Dulwich Villagers. Jazzer, you straplines are doing my head in, I am looking for some subliminal messages but not sure. The Post Office closed four years ago before Covid. Replacing utilities is nothing to do with closing roads for traffic. Rye Lane was not a through road in any case. Such views are rather mistaken.

Hopefully Wolves and Villa returning to where they belong. Although in terms of nasty, John Terry takes that prize, unsure why he isn't in the above list.
  10. The cladding issue is a bit of a red herring - yes important to those with massive bills due to inappropriate and inflammable cladding, but not relevant to most of the housing stock. Good thread by the way, irrespective of my doom and gloom.
  11. It's the fabric of the buildings. Brick. It's not very thermally efficient. I'm in a 1930s solid wall, rendered property. Roof, windows, floors aren't that great. But it is the walls that are the biggest issues. I don't want to retrofit external or external cladding. Don't want to do heat pumps or solar panels. Dunno what the answer is. I posted elsewhere some work from the Climate Change Committee that it wasn't that apocalyptic retrofitting our older housing stock, not sure if this was the link: https://www.theccc.org.uk/publication/sixth-carbon-budget/ Let's see what the PM comes up with on COP26. Depressed that the heating is back on in May. Climate Change isn't just about the world warming up, it's about extreme weather events, April was one of the coldest and driest on record https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/press-office/news/weather-and-climate/2021/lowest-average-minimum-temperatures-since-1922-as-part-of-dry-april, and May is just cold and wet. It was the other extreme a year ago, unseasonably warm and sunny. Hopefully someone can post something positive to cheer me up.
  12. I've just posted elsewhere some informed views on traffic restrictions. But on this one, for Chrisake farming and fishing communities. What did you expect? Well at least we will still have Lidl that will continue to stock Old World wines as well as New World products. I'll chose not to buy Aussie and South African food and drink. I can still buy South American stuff should I wish. But will understand that Polish and New Zealand imports undercutting domestic, is'nt going to benefit Lincolnshire, Kent and the like. We've made our bed and need to move on, but what a stupid decision to leave.
  13. Alice, Jazzer, it would be great to hear what your perspective is. I've posted plenty on the LTN threads about my views on the need to reduce road traffic. Mainly met with deaf ears. And often criticism that I don't live in East Dulwich. I can almost spit into SE22. I live further away from Peckham, and I expect that you don't live there either. But like Lordship Lane I use the Rye for shopping, and I have will have similarly been 'inconvenienced' by road closures. But I choose to see the benefits. Why are you so resistance to change? Are you simply entitled motorists? Or do you have other reasons?? I don't get it. And I don't buy this argument that it is all about those less mobile.
  14. I am not sure how effective these masks are in terms of stooping droplets of the virus, but expect few would want to go anywhere near you https://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/slipknot-masks-evolution-2480093
  15. To give myself extra time in bed I have breakfast in the evening, and sleep in my clothes.
  16. Thanks Redpost - the value of the property is below the inheritance tax threshold - and as the will is split between a number of relatives is not an issue in any case. We'd do it through a solicitor and I understand that this arrangement is fairly common. She's had an IFA around, I understand that commission is around ?1750, but advice included "is there not a family member who can lend you the money rather than go down equity release" She's very hard of hearing so difficult to sort on the phone, if SE22 and the surrounding areas have just heard a very loud phonecall then that was me!
  17. Spartacus - I've posted before on this thread that there should be a solution for those with restricted mobility, my point was that many of you use this, air quality and other factors as the reason you oppose anything that restricts vehicles. I asked for imaginative solutions and got zilch back, as it seems that most want to go back rather than forward. I've been supporting older people in my community for the last ten years, and over a similar time doing personal and professional actions to improve air quality. Perhaps you have too but I expect that many of those who are obsessed with changes to traffic management are really only concerned about the inconvenience to themselves.
  18. There will be multiple excuses for not wearing a mask. The UK is doing pretty well compared to most other western countries in terms of how the public has responded. Without having a police state we should be grateful that most are doing their part. Official surveys are pretty positive so please do not take word of mouth from friends in Spain, France and New York. And let's face it much of the US is a basket case, and France went from hero to zero in a few months. Not an excuse, but a reality check. You could have similar discussions on WTF people are not getting vaccinated. Of course continued mixed messages from the Prime Minister and Government do not help. Book your holiday abroad, don't book your holiday abroad, book your holiday abroad etc etc. The handling is far more of a concern to me.
  19. If you put in a significant amount premium bonds will return you around a percent. Not millions but better than any high street bank or building society nowadays. MSE has a good review on NSI https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/premium-bonds/ There is also flexibility and tax free so better than any ISA
  20. Great to hear of others experience. A very elderly aunt is looking at equity release on her home of 70 years to pay for her live in carer. She's physically a mess but mentally all there and will not go into a care home. That is her exercising her choice. We may be able to club together to support her for a couple of years and the debt will be repaid in the will, with a modest return on the investment. I'm more bothered about the impact of equity release which I understand is where the lender buys your home, at a low value, and lets it back to you. No concern about inheritance, and any interest on our investment is tiddly compared to the effective losses on equity release. I expect that others have faced similar situations and would welcome your views. Please do not troll me about being uncaring, talking about putting her in a home, or being only interested in the money. There are a number of nieces and nephews, but only two of us looking to help out. Being of sound mind she will make the decision, it's good to say this about someone in their 90s, particularly considering seeing how my mother deteriorated when going into a care home.
  21. It find it rather hypocritical that many are only bothered by the elderly and/or those with mobility issues, or air quality, when it suits their agenda. I've said on a number of threads on the LTN that many only 'discovered' poor air quality when the traffic restrictions affected them. I've been working to improve air quality for a number of years, and also volunteer to help older residents. I expect that this statement is unfair on some with strong views posting here, but not all. I attempted to get a discussion on how we could support those affected by buses no longer going down the Rye, but was conveniently ignored. Can we look forward rather than looking back. Really not sure why you are talking about Scooters Rupe. This is a national issue, and not specific to pedestrianising Rye Lane. And you've lost any moral high ground quoting the Daily Hate. There have already been plenty of discussions about electric scooters oh this forum. Whether we like it or not they are here to stay.... I'll get off my soapbox.

The decision should be what's in the interest of the game. I'm pretty sure that in the past for offside there had to be some clear blue water between attacker and defender, otherwise the benefit of the doubt went with the former. More goals, more excitement. But of course not infallible, due to official error. Putting that on screen so the official can see in real time whether a 'reasonable person' could decide whether the goal scorer or others were clearly offside would be a way forward. Of course decisions would vary but there again Liverpool were gifted two key decisions on Sunday that another official would have given the other way. Don't get me started on the player having a hand or a nose in an offside position, that really is getting silly and favours the defending team as they will naturally lean towards the other goal, and vice versa.

Pleased that Leicester won, but thought another shocking decision by VAR, if a player is level using the naked eye (real time or on the screen review) then the goal should stand. Don't use lines down to a few mm's. Couldn't be bothered to watch the analysis so others may have different opinions. To contradict myself very happy with goal line technology, apart from it failing and (Sot) Villa staying up last season.
  24. They?d hang you for incontinence and fiddling your tax Failure to hang yourself justified the axe A deedely dee, a deedely dum Looks like they brought back hangin? for everyone (with thanks to John Cooper Clarke) PS we already have a Low Emission Zone for buses, trucks, vans and the like within the M25, so plenty of cameras. It's been there for over ten years.
  25. I'm talking about shoppers illegally parking, not those delivering to stores. An extreme example of entitled motorists, couldn't give a fig, not those with mobility issues.
