Tighter restrictions/ second national lockdown aka circuit breaker?
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Hmmm, going back a post: 1. If the TUC had supported the wage constraints in 1978 there would have been no Thatcher in 1979 2. If there had been no Falklands War there would be no Thatcher in 1983 and we would have had the experiment of the third way (the SDP) 3. If Kinnock hadn't celebrated winning the election before the day we wouldn't have had Major in, in 1992 4. If the great John Smith hadn't passed away too early we wouldn't have had a Blair government in 1997 5. If Gordon Brown had called an early election we may not have had a coalition government in 2010 6. If the Lib Dems had been a bit less spineless we may not have had a Tory majority in, in 2015 7. If Labour had got the right brother (David not Ed) we would have had a Labour government in 2015 8. If May hadn't been stabbed in the back, and had reached out to the Labour party to get them onside we wouldn't have had a hard Brexit not would we have BoJo in power 9. If Sadiq Khan hadn't proposed Corbyn we may well have a Labour goverment 10. If Corbyn hadn't played a blinder in 2017 coupled with a disaster by May she would have had a majority and may have been able to put the Brexiteers in their place It goes on and on. Appeasement of Adolf Hitler anyone, Edward VIII and many of the ruling class? -
To put this into context the survey the Grauniad quotes was of three people in Hebden Bridge who were either hugging trees, wearing sandals or following lay lines. To be serious good to hear broader views, albeit with a Grauniad rather than a Daily Hate perspective. The latter would be all about our freedoms, to be selfish.....

Sorry Alex, this forum is dying! Can you be a bit more specific? If you are a decent standard try Peckham Town: http://peckhamtownfootballclub.com/

possible congetsion charge extension
malumbu replied to Chrishesketh's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I saw Johnson perform a few times as Mayor and it was like a pantomime. The first time he announced that the two best cities in the world are NYC and London, and London is the best. This was after he'd made a big thing about working with the best cities in Europe such as Berlin and Paris. Definitely was not Europhobic. The second was when he announced the concept of the ULEZ when he did he did a 'sketch' about looking for central government, they are over there, no they aren't, oh yes they are.... But in those days he wasn't pm. Now PM question time is even more of a pantomime. Good post DKHB. Why can't the masses see through him. And please don't call him by his first name. Yes it can be a struggle. -

Johnson in deed signed away the operational grant - you could argue of course why should London get the subsidies that other parts of the country didn't get. I'd argue that the sheer size of our network, and it's piecemeal development over 180 years makes it very difficult to manage. Much of this was developed by private companies who were more bothered about competing rather than coordinating (collaboration of course is a dirty word when it comes to many business people). The landowners not allowing a Grand Central Station didn't help either. Witness four off the top of my head terminus stations that are either comprised of two original stations - Victoria and London Bridge, and those with stations virtually next door - Waterloo, and those off the Euston Road. You didn't mention the folly of the new Routemasters either, maybe the new London taxis could similarly be criticised but not sure of the dynamic central government vs mayor or which of the latter it was. -
Its nitrogen, like in fertiliser. Too much wee and you get overpowered by the smell of ammonia and similar compounds, the bus shelters smelled of that when I was a kid. Also good for jellyfish stings in that it neutralises the acid.

Not sure why reducing consumption is not good for the environment. I know there are arguments that consumption is good for business, innovation and the like. But war is good for driving forward innovation and reducing costs of production, but I wouldn't recommend that. As for weeing on your compost, wont a she-wee work? OMG there is a demonstration on Amazon, wont post the link. Sorry for being puerile.

Brakes are the food of the devil and responsible for the same pub meals from Cornwall to Cumbria. As they are owned by an American firm they will be one of the first to sell chlorinated chicken. Surely in ED schools can get their food delivered by cargo bike or simply grow their own. Disclaimer, these comments are purely in jest.

Not a fan of extending the cc, it's a very blunt instrument. We should have progressed with road charging, something that comes up from time to time but politically a very hot potato. The fairest system, where you get charged for when you drive and where you drive. But as an occasional driver disappointed with successive governments for not putting up fuel duty, the unholy alliance of hauliers and farmers in 2000 put back the environmental cause so much. Before you all dissolve into a puddle with rage check out this article which gives you a great perspective on road pricing. If we want to play our part in tackling climate change we have to get over this concept that we are entitled to drive what we like, when we like, how we like and where we like. https://www.politics.co.uk/reference/road-pricing As an occasional user of public transport I'm happy to subsidise the masses. -
Avoid conspicuous consumption, use things till they fall apart, don't fill the streets with Amazon deliveries, half to be returned. Interesting dynamic as government and business want us to buy things, which is at odds with environmental issues. Men in particular, wee in your compost heap.

I've enjoyed this thread due to the vociferous comments, particularly in the early days of lockdown, and that joggers became public enemy number 1 as opposed to cyclists. My objective view is that many are obsessed with personal bests and the tracking apps, and occasionally wont give way/give space. It happened a couple of times on the railway bridge, cyclists like me walking their bikes, parents with young children some with prams, all trying to give space and then a jogger runs through the tight gap brushing by others. Wonker. But not sure if that is 5, 55 or 95% of joggers. It's usually a bloke thing too, the competitive element
-
Yep they are focused on their PB, I've occasionally come across similar on the footbridge in the park near Ladywell, but most don't bother me. I'm just surprised that the demographic posting on this site aren't often joggers and post alternative views on this thread.

Can't say precisely as you could work out who I am and I would get local villagers with burning torches outside my home. Small dodgy club in Brum where all the Birmingham bands of the time (early 60s) played, and pretty sure the Beetles in the early days. I've tried to get Bev Bevan of ELO to tell me more, and spoke to Steve Gibbons who also played there. Steve Winwood and Denny Laine were others. Oh and the 'N Betweens, who went onto become Ambrose Slade then Slade.

Rate in Southwark about 10% higher than Lewisham, not surprised after a rare foray to Lordship Lane on Saturday, North Cross Road was like Rye Lane at 10 in the evening. I'll be staying this side of the border (southeast of East Dulwich) as it is safer. (Banter) -
Sorry, that was a bit of a cryptic post, perhaps you or others can explain?

Apparently there is a Edward VIII postbox on the way to Beckenham Place Park http://inamidst.com/topic/edwardboxes although most of the links don't seem to work. Here's a piccy https://www.pinterest.it/pin/317433473726380028/ There is a Victorian one on Canonbie Road Just a nice light thread, no politics, road closures or Covid
-
Ah, played in my Uncle's club I expect in the early days.

I love the view that councillors of a different political persuasion would have acted differently. Tory councillors under a Tory government? And Lib Dems are tree huggers last time I looked. Glad someone has mentioned the term 'climate emergency'. Yes.

The couple live upstairs. I imagine very different up there.

When I first started drinking 10.30 or even 10 was last orders. Pubs were shut in the afternoon, and Sunday's were even worse, in some parts (mainly parts of Wales) they were closed. Not sure if the little Englanders want to return to these halcyon days, or perhaps before WW1 when there were no limits. There were differences within London on drinking hours, and when I lived in Abingdon we had summer hours (11 close), it was very exciting when we moved to 11pm all year.

2500 Londoners will be much more representative than the unscientific snapshot on this forum. And its the long game, behaviour change doesn't happen overnight, it took decades in terms of smoking, and drunk driving, and for some sadly using a hands on mobile device whilst driving. In fact some of this reminds me of those complaining in the 60s when the breathalyser was introduced - civil liberties and of course I drive more carefully when drunk.

Good article on weakening of democracy and weakening of the union https://www.globalgovernmentforum.com/an-iconoclastic-government-former-dexeu-chief-philip-rycroft-on-the-threat-to-uk-democracy/ -
Did we all get out of bed the wrong side today? I'm sitting on some lovely data that shows the typical person surveyed (when I say typical the sample size was large enough to get pretty good representation of the population) couldn't give a fig about the environment when planning a journey. There is a Londoncentric cohort who are a little better. Great when they publish this work.

Interesting that Gove talked about flexibility in enforcemnent of Covid restrictions, ie warnings in the first instance and the concept of an 'innocent error' https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/news/uk/gove-defends-police-access-to-test-and-trace-data-of-people-told-to-self-isolate/ Perhaps this applied to him when he admitted taking cocaine (ouch, that is a bit below the belt). Yonks ago I tried to take on the authorities about this sort of thing - automatic fines for small transgressions, but gave up as was getting nowhere with the powers that be. As well as arguing about proportionality, this was also about demonising nice law abiding people rather than the serial abusers - speed merchants, parking on double yellows etc. Happy just to crush their vehicles, that will show them. I've had more than my fair share of traffic violations, driving at a time when the police were much more focused on this sort of thing but generally learned my lesson. I did get caught on a speed trap in Austria a few years ago and the authorities were a pleasure to deal with - no points, no harm to my insurance and a 'sensible' fine. Now if I was a right wing libertarian I could have argued that it was 2 in the morning and the road was empty of vehicles and people. But I am not so more fool me for not taking more notice of the speed limit.
