Bit disappointed. I thought that someone would have some value to add to this thread. Some posts early on in Covid-19 were phenomenal in helping my understanding. Catching up now I've learned nothing. I've got my own views but I'd like to get others' take. Suppose I will have to leave it to future generations' interpretations, if I live long enough.

It helps is the original post explains what the thread is about. I'm confused. But pick up on earlier comments it is debating maths, or mathsdebating, ie a load of wonk (the thread not the subject matter as I'm not sure what it is). Who needs the Edinburgh Fringe Festival or Tim Vine with my wit.

Funny how in the first month of lockdown this website had only one main topic of interest yet now on the eve of another lockdown very little activity. I spose it sums up society as a whole, I've not caught it, nobody in my immediate family/neighbours has got it*, the government have given us a veiled green light to return to normal and I've got other things on my mind. To throw down the gauntlet a little the thread on Spain came across as rather snobbish/pompous as if those who go out to the Costas are from another planet. Reinforcing the view that it wont happen to me. To return to the subject of the thread, and some further views, we've sort of got it right on lots of fronts with avoiding mass gatherings in the work place, entertainment and travel. Set some rules up for pubs, shops and restaurants which are variable in their enforcement. I was jumped on for questioning why we had closed our borders to those countries with lower rates than us on the continent. Was this due to catching coronavirus whilst traveling or when in that country? It seems to me that the two key things still apply social distancing and good hygiene, wherever you are. And that this seems to have gone for many in our population. So cancelling pilot spectator events and opening of a few other businesses appears to be a drop in the ocean/tokenistic when tens of thousands are gathering on our beaches and others, in particular those under 30 are in close contact. * Contacts who had it: Person in street (after returning from Italy), two colleagues and one son of a colleague (all untested), one cycle buddy (untested). Anyway feel free to shout me down. Interested in how others see things.

With thanks to Boris -
Well I've had me haircut, been to the pub, gone abroad but now I'm not allowed to go to a cricket match. It seems OK for 10,000s to go to the beach but not for a 1000 people to congregate in very well controlled environment. Far be it for me to moan, and use the forum as a soap box but I'd be interested in how others feel we are handling it. Fortunately I'm not typing from Spain which must be a complete bummer if you've just gone there on your hols.

Wickes don't cut, so ended up doing it myself in the car park. I was surrounded by these blokes but none of them offered to help. Really sad about Whitten, as used to get more difficult bits of timber there. I understand that there were a number of timber yards there due to the proximity of the canal, in years gone by. There used to be Newsons at Pimlico and West Norwood, Catford Timber and that old boy on Underhill Road who had an eclectic stock of timber, some donkey's years old/

Boris when Mayor paying no attention to detail managed to lose Westminster support for TfL's operating costs. You could argue that this subsidy, much greater than other public transport support across the country, had to stop. -
Brilliant, I could get more than I bargained for. Thanks for the advice. I got my tips on how to strip wallpaper from Mandy, one of Dick Emery's alter-egos. Sadly this clip is not on Youtube but here's some others to entertain you. Probably confusing for anyone under 40.

I need to buy a 2.4 m x 1.2 x 18mm piece of ply. I'd rather not take it back on roof rack and intend to cut it in Wickes car park. I'll be using a general purpose wood saw. Have any others done this sort of thing? It's a genuine but facetious post (I do need to do this) as someone else is using a similar named thread to market something.

I've worked loosely in the security field but don't have any state secrets to give away. There are more Russian spies operating now than Soviets during the cold war. In my time this was as much about economic spying. In the day when we relied more the voice messages (ie phone calls) the Chinese listened in. Countries like Ukraine are bombarded with negative social media from the Russians, in particular there is a move to stop them joining the EU and isolating Russia further. Pretty common knowledge before the report came out. Separately it is not a case that the report states that there was no interference by Russia over the Brexit vote, rather that they have kept their head under the covers, with their fingers in their ears chanting "we are not listening, we cannot hear you"

Catching up on this thread I am thinking that the real issue is the lack of social distancing. So fair first point about congrigating, but why be a dick and ruin your post and then start flinging mud at those holidaying (be it Costa del Sol or Costa Del Cornwall). Same rules apply wherever you are - keep your distance, maintain hygiene and minimise risk. I think that pedestrians should wear helmets too. You never know when you could trip over a paving stone. Wearing helmets is a matter of personal choice and we all view risk in different ways. I'd like a world where cyclists were not vulnerable and came from a time where my parents just let me get on with things from a relatively early age.

Why are UK pubs reopening on......a Saturday??
malumbu replied to DovertheRoad's topic in The Lounge
Don't think I'll be venturing down Soho or Borough Market for the time being. A time warp would be good to take the Market Porter back to the mid 90s when there was no issue with crowds. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/soho-like-petri-dish-super-22302716 -

Didn't mean to but went to three pubs today. Wont give their names Pub 1 - not an upmarket place. Temperature checks, details recorded (phone for track and trace), at table service Pub 2. None of the above. Locals mingling in-doors. Long queue for those sitting outside (served inside) Pub 3. Fell in between 1 and 2. Again didn't do what pub 1 did. Staff serving behind screens with masks too. Manager mingled with mask at half mast. Second wave on its way. -
Rat running is something you do (ie one does) but don't want others to do.

I couldn't work out how to turn some of my FB notifications off so got the e-mails sent into a separate spam folder. It's mainly people I went to school with or worked with many years ago with very different opinions to me. I find it useful to find people from time to time but then it feels a bit voyeuristic looking through their posts and pictures. LinkedIn is better in that you get less spam but get directed to some old contacts albeit generally through employment. Changing the subject slightly watching Lewis Capaldi on a Glastonbury catch up, what a nice young man and singer he is. But fick me so many people recording it on their phones. I've yet to meet someone who does this or argues for it, but pretty common. I can choose to ignore Twitter or FB (and seen people older than me texting during a concert about nonsense) but it winds me up far more than some of the stuff being discussed here about our connected world.

Can we have some clarification please? I consider community chat rooms and Whatsapp social media. Both can do a lot of good for supporting communities. As shows as you are on this discussing relevant issues. I choose not to get very engaged with some other forms and can quite happily rage about anyone who quotes Twitter and the general dumbing down on they way we mass communicate.

In deed, we can celebrate the plucky underdogs defeating the evil empire. Actually they defeated the evil empire a couple of years later, but historical accuracy doesn't bother most. -
Best way to kill a neighbour without being caught?
malumbu replied to Peckhamgatecrasher's topic in The Lounge
Used to have neighbours working in Saudi. When they came back for hols lots of late partying. At the time I thought chlorine gas via their loft. But actually carbon monoxide better. -
Well on the positive side those of you with issues about BLM etc have a football team to support..... Timely press release by Burnley FC condemning the White Lives Matters stunt tonight https://www.burnleyfootballclub.com/news/2020/june/club-statement/ But what on earth possesses anyone to spend that sort of money anyway on their backward beliefs.
