  1. Yet another meaty thread ladies and gets. Is it appropriate for blokes to wear shorts in the office? They look so fetching on the posties, DHL delivery drivers and Thames Clipper clippies. And if so what style - colonial with turn ups, long socks and sandals, shirts tucked in? And colours - does salmon pink really fit in with the office? Finally the length, I thought tailored, with belt and well above the knee. Yet at a weekend festival most gents seemed to be in longer, baggy cargo pants, I thought were so mid 10s (fortunately not the horrid 3/4 length from the 00s). I'll leave swimwear for another thread.
  2. And? What is this about? Do you have views? Isn't this a forum for discussion and debate? Even twitter has more content. Can the smart phone generation actually spend any time on anything rather than flicking between channels, Youtube, buzzfeed whilst posting links etc.
  3. It's all gone very dull on the forum. Maybe everyone's on holiday. Anyway US taken sanctions against Russia for the chemical attack on the UK. Trump hasn't tweeted to protest so it all must be true. Stuff that up your pipes and smoke them you conspiracy theorists!
  4. Bit late I am afraid. I'd now consider walking through Dulwich Park to the Alleyn's Head. Better run than the sister pub the Dog. In the past the Dulwich Woodhouse (I'm stuck in the past when that was its name and it was a much better pub). Ditto for its sister pub the Clockhouse. And as I am a run of criticising makeovers and overpriced food I'd include the Rye Hotel in this bracket. An alternative walk would be Nunhead, where you could do the cemetery and then go onto the nearby Waverley or Ivy, or a bit further to the Old Nun's Head. The best walk would be over towards Brenchley Gardens, up and over One Tree Hill, down through Honor Oak, Possibly calling at the General Napier (rarely visited and not gastro) and then over to Blythe Hill, to the park and down to the Blythe Hill Tavern. You could head over towards Nunhead and then cut through to Honor Oak fields through Camberwell New Cemetery to the same destination or mix and match on the return.

    Football Focus

Excellent documentary on the artist in residence at a football club last season, in part shows what it is really all about (no Sky pundits or armchair fans) https://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-football-club-artist-in-residence/episode-guide/

Nope, more of a case that Korea and Japan are successful economies with I expect a decent standard of living and still making competitive high end products, although I believe that a lot of Japanese companies now manufacture in China. Spose you could say similar about Germany, Sweden, France (although they box clever on protectionism and are perhaps coming a little unstuck).
  7. Oh, assumed that this was a team in the Tour de France. Seriously (it's a cycling brand). http://www.4za.com/en
  8. Boris bike's were Ken's legacy. Boris will also leave one like it or not. For whatever reason Londoners voted him in twice - not just that Ken made it too easy. More challenging than the safe seat of Uxbridge. We are at least not in the American system where the newbie overturns everything that the predecessor put in place.

Interesting but I don't think Doc Martens are any cheaper than when they were made in the UK so perhaps they simply make more profit shifting to China. Other stuff of course - economies of scale, decent engineering, cheap labour. where does Japan fit into the equation? And are not labour costs going up in Korea?

Most of you aren't getting my point. I'm not going out of my way to buy British, I am questioning how we got to where we are (I am sure it is not all free markets and globalisation) after the half assed policy put forward by Jezzers. I did in deed find Rega turntables on the made in Britain website as I was wondering if we still made good hi fi as we did 30 years ago. Right, hope that is perfectly clear now......

But how much do we as consumers, and retailers/manufactures put the boot in? Ie we have a product that can compete but marginal increase in profit margins, or destructive competition, put an end to it. Mr Sainsbury, these Stoke on Trent mugs at ?3.50 are just too expensive. I want to save 47 pence.Or why buy a quality product when I can get something cheap and nasty. Noting that imports are as high a quality as the retail chain wants. There must be a stationary buyer who orders crates of pencil sharpeners that don't sharpen from China just because they are cheap. I'd forgotten Raleigh.
  13. Scroll down to picture 7. For those who hate links without a description it is from 100 Uses for a Dead Cat (this counted for humour in the 1980s). I was looking for a large bottom but couldn't find one. https://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/b/bike_racks.asp There were some brilliant bikes painted, decorated and hung in various places when I saw Stage 6 of the Tour. Can't find any nice photos. But if you have time on your hands (Rendel?!) then perhaps this could be a nice project with dumped/damaged yellow bikes.
  14. Bring it on. Saw plenty yesterday when on the ride in London. Anything that further encourages cycling is great. If this business model fails then so be it. Not sure why some of you want to denigrate whole sectors of the population (apart from those who voted Brexit of course, has to be exceptions) with the use of words such as chavs. What are you doing to solve these great divides (hide in your gated communities). Sorry digressed there. Parking irresponsibly far greater a social evil. Love and peace.
  15. Turn use water when cleaning your teeth, fluoride in the paste will have greater benefits too. Don't run the cold tap waiting for it to get cool. Use that water and have it in the fridge. As long as you haven't got any lead piping which you should run for a while first thing in the morning. Well that was the view 30 years ago.
  16. In deed I would have put the source down if I could find it. Think it was on the BBC news but a quick Google search couldn't find it. Tried Channel 4 news too. Anyway I did see it honest, hence my particular interest. Problem is with any harvesting I have to pump the water up hill if either to the toilet or to water the garden. Not sure how easy it is to rig something up.

Yes I saw it hence my posting. Kinky boots are also still made in Northants and they made a film (and now a musical) about it. Any views about the bigger issues?

Special orders as they have kept some of the equipment and retained some of the staff. 99% made in China. You could argue that they had a niche and were not being undercut by cheap imports so why relocate production?

Corbyn's new strategy to win over the masses. We bought British cars where I grew up. British Leyland. They were shite. As were much of the audiovisual and white goods. So was it bad product, consumers choosing to save a few quid, or retailers maximising profit that put an end to much of our production? And is Corbyn a messiah or just a very naughty boy? Dyson moving out. A twit in any case. I bought socks, pants and shirts that were British, in M&S. Happy to pay the price. They moved production and finished off what was left of the UK textile industry. Loved Doc Martens. Moved production overseas Believe it or not Levis used to produce in the UK but as with their American plants long since shifted to the developing world I used to have a lovely British suit from Gap. Probably the equivalent of ?800 nowadays. Now you can get slightly inferior ones for quarter of the equivalent cost from wherever. The one that upset me was the loss of the potteries, cutlery, and hand and garden tools. Bladdy good quality stuff. I did buy a British turntable (Rega, from Billy Vee in Lee). By chance.
  20. Saw on the news that a water authority in the North was funding some rainwater harvesting - large tanks in the garden and then water pumped into the house to flush to toilet. Great I thought until I saw the price - ?1000s. Probably save $20 a year on the water meter and 500 years to pay back. Hmmm. (currently using bathwater to water the garden plants - OK first thing is not to have baths)
  21. They don't engage with you, the phone goes dead. Scam companies don't work like that.
  22. Sue, I am sure that can find conspiracy sites where the UK is bending over backwards to accommodate Russian interests too. Which we are.

Like it! I'll try this one.
  24. What sort of travelers? New Age ones are particularly great, remember them fondly (or maybe not) from the 1980s.
  25. Thanks, sorry on reflection this is a bit self-indulgent. Must be the heat.
