The going home for the weekend song thread...come on you groovey foookers
malumbu replied to ????'s topic in The Lounge
Problem is that there appears to be some basic IT ignorance. Some cool people started this thread and posted some eclectic music which you could see immediately. They seem to have moved onto pastures new and those who now want to share can't be assed to do a simple thing. Here you are (took two seconds whilst my rant took 30) -

Copy the embeded code damn you all. Right click on youtube vid and simply copy - here's one I made earlier. A famous ex-local resident making a late comeback -
I think it was around ?75 for half board to Meyerhofen in 83 - flight Lydd to Ostend then 20 hours or so by coach. Basic food but you could cash in your tokens to get a better evening meal. Kids nowadays....

A man dressed as a cyclist (asking for money)
malumbu replied to Capitals's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I ride a bike but need some money for some decent clothing. Can you all pm me your card details, including pin and password. You can sleep happily in your bed knowing that I will be able to get some Dulwich Paragon CC kit so I no longer look like a tramp -
Unfortunately those continentals send us their pollution. I mean we've done the right thing and moved all that nasty heavy industry to central Europe and those naughty Frenchies waft the emissions over here like a scene from the Holy Grail. Having seen the soot that came out of trucks, buses and SUVs in India give me European standards any day.

Blunt speaking. What's the point pf points on knives?
malumbu replied to Captain Marvel's topic in The Lounge
Blunt knives more dangerous than sharp ones around the kitchen. I've a habit of breaking the ends of kitchen knives through using them for inappropriate DIY. You notice the lack of a point when cutting stuff as Loz has mentioned above. -
We'll be agreeing deals with the Sub continent or South America to bring in cleaners, pickers, factory workers and health and care workers, so I expect we'll get cut-price labour for construction too.

As a cyclist, driver and someone with a motorbike license the thing that accords with me is security. I have had four push bikes(the last one straight on Gum Tree) and one 600cc motor bike nicked (into a van and onto the continent). With cordless angle grinders we've lost the war... This affects my quality of life far more than safety (even though this could be an end to my quality of life....) and we will have to beg to differ on the ULEZ. Did own a couple of two strokes though.....

State primary school transition to top private school

The Liquidator is not owned by Chelski, in the late 60s many teams were using this. And Z-cars? Some good questions for University Challenge. Does anyone like me, does anyone care? -
Cycling down the Thames path I saw a small group of 'motley' people. They were picking wild rocket and (can't remember the other plant) and we had a nice chat about foraging. I say motley as they were from all over the world and where foraging was much more common. When I stayed in Sweden we foraged wild strawberries, redcurrants and chantrelles. Small population lot of wild spaces. Not the organised gangs that pick forests bear of wild mushrooms for the trendy greengrocers. Anyway advice on (a) when to plant wild garlic (bulbs or clumps) (b) what to plant in my own garden (wild strawberries?)

A homeless person had managed to make a den, hope he hasn't been evicted.

This is a prompt. I post, then you add either commenting on the subject, going off at a tangent or giving me abuse as being a sad (or angry) person with too much time on my hands, needing to get over it, or not chequeing my pist for grandma ore tyypoz. On this occasion with so much else going on - royal baby, Arsene Wenger retiring from football, I'll cut you a little slack. Here's a nice alternative to Goooogle which comes up with good searches and plants trees https://www.ecosia.org/ (thanks to the person who suggested)

It may be opportunist and not sure if it is correct but I like what Clegg had to say : The former deputy PM added that the scandal is a result of politicians? ?constant, craven genuflection? to Britain?s mainly right-wing press. ?Until the British political class gets up off its knees as far as these bullying, vile, profoundly right-wing newspapers are concerned, we?ll continue to stumble from one unjust, inhumane and ? in policy terms ? illogical approach to immigration to the next,? he said

I was at Celtic vs Forest in 84 UEFA Cup standing with 30000 in the jungle (very hostile). I don't recall 'Walk on' but "Argentina, Argentina" (for some reason they supported Argentina in the battle over the Malvinas). It all went quiet when Forest Scored. I kept very quiet. -
Paper round. The equivalent to about ?1.50 an hour today. Once stripped down cigarette lighters, as there was a fault that stopped them turning off (pockets catching fire!). Great fun doing monotonous work, listening to Radio City, and being 'abused' (banter) by the young ladies who usually spent five days a week packing them up for distribution. Also picked peas one summer. Much better than the day spent picking raspberries which paid about the same as the paper round and was far more uncomfortable (standing picking raspberries).

State primary school transition to top private school

In last night's final of University Challenge St John's (a fairly modest lot) beat Merton. I expect that all were very well educated but that St John's were at the better state schools or less well know public schools where as Merton went to more elite establishments. St John's were surprisingly bad at the bonus points, I did better than them (surely everyone knows "You'll Never Walk Alone" was from the musical Carousel), and Merton excelled at the arts and classics. But St John's did much better at the starters for ten. UC is a great indicator of the impact of schooling on general and classical knowledge. Sadly no popular music in the final. Gender balance is usually poor and does not represent the university population. Good review by the Telegraph. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2018/04/23/university-challenge-2018-grand-final-female-dominated-pleasingly/ -
Microsoft has thoughtfully provided an escape key should you be directed to Bing by mistake. Simply type g into the search box. Disclaimer, Bing is no doubt useful for something, and other search engines are available as well as the big G. Or perhaps Bing or Internet Explorer have profiled me.

Exactly Sue. You are inviting yourself to ridicule by numpties like me. Fortunately it is Monday so I am in good humour. Come Friday I'll be suggesting appropriate over-sized cars for blocking up the local roads in the school run. -
Saw a documentary maybe 30 years ago about how many people retired to the SW, particularly from the Midlands as they had enjoyed many happy holidays in Cornwall, Somerset and Devon. At the time they said how miserable it could be during the winter, long nights and so much shut. Fast forward 30 years and it can be even worse, they always feature Minehead, aging population, bored youth and few employment prospects. Of course Kent/Sussex unlike Somerset are still in the SE bubble, very connected both to London and to the continent and in reasonably full employment. More of a lesson in imagining what the place is like when it is wet and grey.

Thanks Rendel, Meyhofen was my first ever proper foreign holiday going overnight by coach (summer).

EDF returning to it's heartlands - not consumer rip offs, social cohesion or geopolitics. Please leave any abuse for me on these threads not this one! Been to Obergurgl many times - good runs, high, extremely snow sure, pretty and close to Innsbruck. Downsides a bit posh/expensive (excuse my humble roots). Any other recommendations - Albach seems lovely but a bit low (going in early January with my two (youth) kids). Please do include views on accommodation - we stay in 3* guest houses rather than the 5* Hotel Edelweiss. My next thread will be on Tuscany holiday villas and second homes in Provence.

So many places - I liked the Masdif Central going onto Cantal. The Gorges including the Tarn (less visited) and the Ardeche. Motorbiked around France many years ago and I think we slept on the beach at Banyuls. Some parts - the SW coast and up towards Nice are frighteningly expensive. A recall motorbiking down South from Le Mans and it was flat, straight and dull. I spend a lot of time in Brittany which is what it is, less 'continental' a little wet but quiet and rugged. First place I went to is Provence - good in the spring and autumn - quieter and cooler. And Paris - just has a great vibe. Much of it is a mood thing!

Exactly Dover. Should have explained that I worked in consumer protection for a few years. This does remind me of the illustrative story we told in those consumer days of the early 00s. The council are considering a new bus route and go knocking on doors. In the posh area, no wait a second, they wouldn't have a bus route in a posh area. In the working class area they knock on the door and get a punch in the face when they ask 'would you mind having a bus stop outside your house'. In the middle class area the householder mumbles. After the door has closed they compose a letter of complaint to the Guardian/Mail/Times etc. Fast forward and replace this with a 'community web site'.
