So I get most of my information from the Archers. Mind you that Brexit supporter chancer gentleman farmer/dodgy businessman Brian has been showing his true colours recently. The other source is a satirical cartoon called Family Guy that used to be on BBC 3. Not sure what has happened to BBC3 has it mutated into London Live? Anyway I digress. So there is an episode of FG where they are at Ground Zero (before rebuilding). So it was the Iraqis that did this? No it was Saudis. Oh. But supported by the Saddam Hussain? No, Pakistan. So it was all the Iraqis fault, we'd better invade. So we've made a bit of mess of the financial sector by taking too many risks/deregulating? Yes it's all the fault of Brussels/Eastern Europeans (delete one if appropriate) And our overly bureaucratic NHS which at time fails to focus on prevention/public health and will be challenged by the ageing population. Yes it's all the fault of Brussels/Eastern Europeans. And we've failed to invest in our traditional industries, move with the times, create quality jobs in our industrial heartlands. Yes it's all the fault of Brussels/Eastern Europeans. And this has led to too much concentration of power and money in London and the SE. Yes it's all the fault of Brussels/Eastern Europeans. Ah, I get it, we need to leave Europe. Invade Iraq. Build a wall between US and Mexico. etc. Disclaimer, the above were probably not the best argued examples and I probably not explained industrial history, globalisation, shifts in power etc etc well.

They've now gone into spam mode, book a flight and then get bombarded on a weekly (and often daily) basis with 'special offers' - car hire, hotels, prostitutes, drugs. It's always a last chance special offer before you fly. Obviously sex workers and narcotics aren't on offer yet, but Michael may be thinking about expanding the service. I was at home yesterday and it was lovely looking at the weather - alternating sunshine and snow showers, the light, and the birds (I think we have some migratory large blackbirds and at the moment the wood pigeon is adept to knocking suet pellets out of the feeder). I picked peas as a student, easier than doing spuds (back breaking) and far better than soft fruit which paid the equivalent of about ?2 an hour. All casual, all cash in hand. The generation that did this sort of thing has gone - students and school kids (wouldn't do it any more), urban poor (wouldn't do it any more), travellers (not sure whether they still do casual farm work), and as said many of us would also be signing on. Interestingly the farm has diversified into B&B. Most voted to leave in the area. Brian Aldridge is a keen leaver, but also a crook and a philanderer. Not a good role model for the rural gentleman Brexiting farmer (or maybe it is).

Thanks all. I borrowed an SDS drill when chasing cabling into the kitchen walls, and had to buy a diamond tipped cutting disc. Even then it was hell. Bally cowboy builders in the mid 30s, if they'd known that owners would have wanted to do minor updating 80 years later. Still hopeful that there are some special masonry nails - you tube suggests putting them through a cork to steady before you hammer, I may try that too.

Best quality bits and drill DF? Prices have come down but so has quality (from Screwfix user reviews). The masonry bits I bought in the past used to come with free resharpening. The throwaway world is not the fault of the Chinese manufacturers - they just provide the product at the quality we demand, for this sort of thing poor!

For some reason in the 1930s they used a thin layer of plaster, and underneath rock hard sand and cement. On interior non-supporting walls a soft breeze substance was then the bulk. So masonry nails bend, drill bits dull, and when you get past the cement the drill then goes all over the place. I've drilled out, and then put a wooden plug in which can then take a nail, say for hanging pictures. Accurately drilling say to put up shelves is a nightmare, both due to the bit slipping, or not going in at 90 degrees. Googled too, but maybe I am not doing a specific enough search Obvious thing is to get an even better drill, and top of the range masonry bit. Banging nails in doesn't seem to be an option. Serious suggestions only - not 'move house' or 'bring a man in'

Met office are the best in the world Daily Express and other tabloids buy their forecasts from the cheapest service and tend to be alarmist. I'll be cycling in all week as per usual, and sadly I doubt if it will be sledging weather, but I'll have an extra layer. I expect airports will be well prepared. There should be compulsory training, learner badges, lights mirrors and indicators, a pedestrianising test, and a new offence of dangerous pedestrianising, or pedestrianising without due care and attention. They often have no tolerance of other pavement and road users, do not pay pavement tax, and are probably uninsured. Sadly this post is not purely facetious.....

So there is an occasional problem with 'ghost drivers' on the autobahn, cars driving in the wrong direction. There is an elderly couple (to bring this up to date, this could apply to other age groups) on the road near Stuttgart, when they hear an announcement on the radio. "Warning of a ghost driver on the Bundesautobahn 8". The passenger turns to the driver and says "what only one?".
