  1. I've lost the plot on this. From my narrow take, in sweeping generalisations, the typical cyclist is probably a nicer person than the typical driver in terms of the things that concern me. It's no doubt a class and education thing. Hence when people post about cyclists jumping red lights I see this as a Daily Mail narrow point of view. And no doubt most cyclists voted to stay in the EU. Surely if I use the word 'chuffin' it is pretty obvious that I am being light hearted. But of interest when I have got into work and moaned about cyclists a person I work with says collateral damage is worth taking to get more people on their bikes.

I think more Tony Pulis, dogmatic, no imagination, no Plan B
  3. Some facts. Around 40,000 people die each year due to poor air quality. The main source of the toxic pollution is diesel vehicles. Cars disproportionately so. Car occupancy is falling, ie we don't like to share our space with others. Most of us drive erratically and many routinely speed, accelerate/brake harshly. Wouldn't it be a better place if we didn't need traffic calming. I need road transport to deliver commodities and goods. Build housing and infrastructure. But don't see it as a right to harm others in selfish/wasteful use of the tin boxes. Now that is my moral high ground. What is your moral high ground Loz? (I've had my speeding points, and not born a tree hugger)
  4. Hmmm, got a bit of grief as I suspected. But comments about selfish cyclists really wind me up. Most of us are chuffin heroes doing our bit for the environment, and probably very nice people too. Not being sarcastic or patronising, rather making a point about "do something about it" rather than post. Even if you had started a petition or asked how best to get some action, as I did suggest, then that would have been more valuable. Otherwise it just comes out as reading the Daily Mail. Anyway he who is without sin etc, I've no doubt been just as guilty of ranting to get something off my chest on here, and will get my just deserts next time I start a similar thread. See us cyclists are in deed genuinely nice people as I climb down off my moral high ground.
  5. Citroen ones are non standard and hence not sure if the kits work, and could end up wrecking the bolts. Reviews are mixed. You can simply hammer a slightly undersized socket and give that a go too.
  6. Spot on. Thanks Mark and Duncan. Voice of reason. I could go on about drivers and mobile phones, but then I'd open myself up to the same criticism that I have made of others. "Do you mind not using your mobile phone whilst driving" you can guess the response. More interesting is the whole nudge and encouraging better behaviour and role models.
  7. Well you lot are a load of help. Funnily enough I have some dialogue with the manufacturer about diagnostics. Its a lump of metal you muppets, with a code on it, not a piece of solid state electronics. Perhaps nobody under 35 knows about the none-virtual world. If you all ask nicely I'll keep you posted.
  8. Why are you posting here? Yes sadly some cyclists jump red lights. This is a societal thing unless we want to live in a police state. Write to your MP, the Met Police, your Borough, the Times, rather than on this site. Then when you've got a response you can discuss that. Today I saw a motorist forward of an advanced stop line, a pedestrian cross the road whilst looking at their smart phone, and a car across the pedestrian crossings whilst the lights were red. Just a normal day, nothing to see here people, move on.
  9. A certain high street tyre retailer, that may or may not be close by, may or may not have rounded off the key that is used to take off the locking wheel bolt on my Citroen. They may or may not have been at fault but definitely weren't prepared to take any remedial action. A more helpful garage got the wheel off with brute force, but I do not wish to trash the remaining locking bolts. Done lots of research - most of the services offered involve trashing the locking bolts. Other brands you can order on line but Citroen seem to be different. I have the key code but a dealer had replaced the original ones years ago so these are not matched to the VIN plate so the manufacturer may not be able to help. I am raising this with them further (oh the story goes on and on, for want of a nail a country was lost). Practical suggestions please? Anyone got a box of Peugeot/Citroen wheel nut keys? Cheap on ebay but not matched to my code.
  10. Amateur fireworks? Made my own 30 years ago when I was in the lab. Very exciting. Very illegal.
  11. I'm annoying. In case you haven't seen I am so annoying I am not even going to hang around for the response as the Blue Planet is on. (PS time-wasting is feature or the Internet age, get used to it, no matter how pooh it is)

    Ageism

My pay has stagnated and I doubt whether at my age I could compete in the job market. My work life balance is that I don't want to work at the speed and long hours that some of my younger colleagues do. On a more positive note our recruitment and promotion policy totally anonymises candidates - age, gender, ethnicity, sexual and qualifications. Bit weird sifting applications by a number identifier (much nicer when you can give someone a name) and occasionally candidates turn up who are clearly with no relevant qualifications or experience.

A new word was coined yesterday - Brexit Botherers - those of us who have so try to sort out the mess, and understand some of the lunacy (or perhaps more appropriately the lunatics). Got to laugh, or otherwise you'd cry.
  15. Sadly some fugger put paint stripper on my then newish car. I went on line and bought a special kit of base coat, colour and lacquer. I've messed with cars for years, had summer jobs both in a company doing up light commercials and a paint manufacturer. Modern vehicles are just so much more difficult to touch up. The job on my vehicle wasn't bad, and the damage on the roof panel so is not so obvious. But it still shows. On the good side they don't rot like they used to.
  16. If the colour layer is damaged you will (a) not be able to polish out the scratch (b) risk this becoming a rust spot You can rub it down and respray the area with an aerosol - the match will be dreadful You can respray the whole panel - hard work You can touch it up with a brush - most dealers will sell a thin pot with a brush - it will still show You can paint over with Hammerite - it will slow down the rust but not hide the scratch You used to be able to get scratch kits that included some pigment to help mask the scratch Not in this recommendation though: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/86280/best-scratch-removers-2017
  17. So why do you have a car DF? Would't it be cheaper to use Zip car, Uber, cabs, to compliment your already good environmental example. And hire on the odd occasion of a long distance. And that goes for many others too. Not sure why you are all getting hot headed about Sadiq. Same could be said about Ken (C charge and LEZ) and Boris (ULEZ).
  18. About a fiver for a burger and a pint in Wetherspoons. What's not to like?
  19. MOT test does a rudimentary examination of emissions based on opacity (ie smoky exhausts). This fails to capture small particles of pollution or nitrogen dioxide, responsible for most of the early deaths associated with pollution.
  20. There was a big campaign by TfL in 2012 - didn't make the slightest different. Some Boroughs are quite proactive - Southwark isn't bad, but again probably little difference to behaviour change. You need a national campaign saying, you selfish bastards, leaving your engines on, driving unnecessarily, with one occupant, with dirty and or oversized cars, killing our children (and others). https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/media/press-releases/2012/september/londoners-encouraged-to-make-a-small-switch-to-curb-engine-emissions https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/media/press-releases/2012/september/londoners-encouraged-to-make-a-small-switch-to-curb-engine-emissions Here's Nigel Havers' one man show (he gets told to buga off as many times as me) http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04qrnh6
  21. Can you do this service for others eg Herbert Kisbey aka Kisbey the Call boy, Josephene Avenue, Brixton, died circa 1965 I understand broke and an alcoholic, musichall artist (apparently on stage with Chaplin). http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/71/a2304271.shtml http://www.leodis.net/playbills/item.asp?ri=200381_32047671 I've got the link to variety magazine, and the 1927 Derby winner
  22. I love this notion that London has suddenly become polluted. It was far worse both in times before the industrial revolution (smelly cottage industries) and post industrial revolution until relatively recent years - coal burning, dirty cars, heavy industry (pre cat converters) etc. Now that doesn't deflect that we are not meeting international standards, people are dying, so it needs to be tackled. I've done plenty on selfish drivers in other threads. By coincidence, doing my monthly bus ride into town, just written to Sadiq about bunching of buses and the impact on congestion and pollution. Trust me I know shed loads on the environment. But I abhor the knee jerk stuff. Back on the bike Monday - an hour or so the cardio vascular benefits far outweigh my exposure to pollution. Green walls are pretty but wont solve the problem. http://www.livinggreencity.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/ec_house001-e1467033207279-1-e1467989180499.jpg
