Energy saving light bulbs, what a waste of time, throwing out
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
You've missed some of the points of my thread (a) Incandescent light bulbs are not a thing we will ever return to. I was poking fun at some of the bizarre things that Brexiters campaigned on. (b) The LED lights are the bees knees, and the price is coming down. Just bought my second pack from Screwfix and a set of GU10s to to replace the halogen spot lights © the move to CFL was simply premature, a shame that LED lights were not market ready at that point. (d) The Daily Mail is not a source of news. Obviously a source of opinion but not one that I will ever be guided on. -
How great it is that we will be leaving the EU and I can start using incandescent bulbs again. Just like the smell of Napalm in the morning, I love the smell of the burning plastic insulation and the heat they waste. So what do do with the swirly whirly, or elongated, energy saving bulbs. (obviously I'm not replacing them with incandescent, but the most excellent LED bulbs which are great in terms of light and energy use). I'll dump them (assume they have to be recycled somewhere) or put them for free on this forum unless anyone has any bright (ha ha) ideas.

Very exciting. And your reason? Happy to contribute towards 1000s of deaths in London each year from the poor air?? The future is electric. As nobody on a bike goes further than about 30 miles nowadays ideal (I've done 500 miles on a bike in a day when I used it as a sole form of transport) http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/gallery/best-electric-motorbikes

Very seasonal. Spot the Ivy! -
Dyson is a twot. He is not some sort of folk hero. Thanks for the post Joe. There was a posting on the BBC a few days ago with someone saying he was a person to trust in.

Where is it? I've got nothing on at Xmas so this will give me something to do.

Breastfeeding in public (surely there cannot still be an issue...)
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
I'm overwhelmed. Most of my threads die a quick death. Only thing I have to add to the generally spot on comments, is when I saw a watershed. My sister feeding in the late 80s it still seemed to be a thing not done in public. and then a few years later no issue. Wasn't sure if the first of my peer group was an early adopter, whether there was some turning point in the early 90s, or whether my evidence based on a sample of two is over-simplifying things. -
Dont forget to clear the snow off the ROOF of your car
malumbu replied to DulwichFox's topic in The Lounge
I'd quite like the police to stop people as they did when I was younger. There would be less cars with a light out, even less people on their phones, perhaps more people would stick loosely to 20mph. I expect snow is the least of their priorities (was the original post a useful one or reactionary?). Of course I do have a story when I braked hard in Italy, snow came off my roof and broke the windscreen wipers. Now there was a dash to the airport to return the hire car that I never want to repeat. And the snow had been cleared before we started the journey. -
We were all breastfed in my family. When my mother had the last of us in 1974 she was down to about 10% and I understand that breastfeeding was considered to be old fashioned, not progressive etc. Please do correct me but I expect that the baby milk manufacturers had a negative role here. Fast forward to the early 90s when my colleague breastfed when I was in the office. I thought how unusual at the time. But quickly this became pretty normal and that was getting on for 25 years ago. Just surprised that this is being discussed on Questiontime, when I thought that society had long since moved on. (This is not a question of breast vs bottle I hasten to add, just the acceptably of feeding in public).

I'm a big fan of unions, but even I > know that in the 70's and 80's they did a lot of > damage through believing they were invincible. > I'm sure you meant this to be a balanced view but I think this needs further comment. This was a different world. Large private companies, massive state sector, trade unions negotiating terms and conditions was right and made sense. Trade unions were born of a time when workers were being killed and mutilated in factories, mills and pits with no protections and no compensation. They are membership organisation and express the will of the membership. They are not an evil entity. Of course in the 60s and 70s the tens millions of members were often more militant and had much greater expectations. Essentially the product was crap, the working practices crap, production was crap, and we were suffering from years of sitting our haunches not investing and moving with the times. British motorcycle industry a prime example. And even that is a gross generalisation as it is a crime that areas were we were world leaders and had invested, railway technology, aviation some elements of computing, we lost our competitive advantage. Anyway I am ranting. Brexit will not bring us back to some rose tinted view of British manufacturing from the 1950s to mid 60s. So apart from overstating the impact of the unions very much agreeing.

Measure, electrical tester (screwdriver) and bradawl. Also a proper Swiss Army Pen knife, always useful if you get your arm trapped by a falling rock in a canyon. Never can have enough, but I can never find one when I want one. Perhaps there could be some SS swaps, I've got a few useless ones, and if you go on ebay around this time you can find "unwanted SS" or even better wait a few days and you can get an "unwanted Christmas present" I've seen them in the past where a couple has split up and the present still unwrapped.

Clapham and Dulwich. How very nice! Fish in a Tie is most excellent, and also most good value too.

I've actually reinstated most of the walls knocked down by a previous owner, and also divided up a larger room. All done with stud/plasterboard, so hopefully none of the walls knocked down were load bearing. Removing the chimney breast was dodgy, got advice that the upstairs chimney breast is essentially self supporting but I'd rather not dig any further. This was a DIY maniac from the 80s who did his own boiler and supplementary radiators as well (thanks Mr Bennison for eventually sorting out that mess) and gas pipework, ie with joints that take natural gas. Leak leak. Bang. Now whilst competent even I don't do gas pipework. Wiring is fund too, including redundant live cabling under the floorboards. Sorry this is s DIY disasters thread.

If you knock it with your fist and it makes a hollow sound it will be a stud wall. Trust me, I know what I am doing. Happy to come round and knock on your wall for ?80/hour. Here's a video of when building work goes wrong. Sadly not the bit about a lack of an RSJ

Is this thread for real?

I watched the first one, and found it amusing. The second one followed a hard hitting documentary about young poorly educated males in Hull, and their views about politics and leaving Europe. BBC a little out of it's comfort zone. Then onto the second episode of Motherland (back into it's middle class intellectual comfort zone) and I realised what shallow cliched crap it was. Perhaps that is also East Dulwich for you too. Discuss. In defence it is not written by Ben Elton (thank God) and doesn't have David Mitchell in either.

According to the Mail, Express and Torygraph, we've just won World War III. Well done Winston May, Bomber Davies and the like.
-
you can do what you want, although somebody might complain, take enforcement action or your house may fall down. Knock it with your fist, if it sounds hollow, fine. If rock hard then not. If half way then probably ok to do as it may be breeze or some other hardish substance but not structural. You'll need to watch for wiring etc, and in the worst case gas or water pipes.

Forest Hill Road Surgery - again.
malumbu replied to George Orwell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
#Very sad news and thanks for letting me know EDF - Caroline was a casual friend and clearly a well loved and respected family doctor. -
Nice one JohnL. Loz, really????

No. I don't have any favourite Quorn recipes, and I haven't eaten meat for 30 years. It was likened to mushroom when it first came out in the 80s. Just as close to athlete's foot!

I see from the Wiki entry it was set up by Jim Davidson. Doesn't surprise me as his humour always verged on racist. Funnily enough people I know of in deepest south east east east London/ North Kent find Davidson hilarious,
