I am too versed in consumer rights. It can become an obsession. I wonder why others roll over so easy or write to the Guardian when things go wrong. I am saddened at the erosion of local authority Trading Standards Services. Bur my question is why do we get bad products in the first place, and as a society why don't we care? I had it beaten into me that unfettered free market, with effective competition and informed consumers was the best way to efficiently deliver goods and services. Well this concept seems to be have overturned by recent popularist revolutions (I think I mentioned Trump/Brexit) and got away with it. But somebody most be specifying/ordering cheap nasty pens from a Chinese factory, pencil sharpeners that don't sharpen, other products that are un-ergonomic, short working life (foot pump from Dyas that broke after one use) etc because people, including me, thin they are getting a good deal. They are making a profit but it doesn't seem to be good for society. And then we throw them away, wasting resources and creating landfill, and then buy another one. Not learning and breaks a week later.

Need for ski chains and or winter tyres in the Italian Dolomites
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Thanks, I'd better double check with Thrifty. I usually book with Economy car rentals, web site is a bit clunky, and you get a token, but you can speak to people there. Only time it went wrong is that they booked me with....... Goldcar (Malaga airport). That really was bad. At Xmas booked off airport hire at Malaga - so that's why it was so cheap. It actually worked OK (almost in walking distance) and they checked every inch of the car over at the end to try to get their pound of flesh. -
YESSSSS this is more like it. A proper East Dulwich Forum thread. Hiring a car from Treviso near Venice in a week or so's time and drivng up to the Dolomites. Main roads are kept clear but almost came a cropper a few years back as the snow was so heavy and the car had summer tyres. Once upon a time booked snow chains and was frustrated as didn't need them. Never booked them since, and in more recent years travelling in Germany/Austria winter tyres are compulsory so as long as you don't get stuck in snow roads are fine. Booked this time through Ryanair. Don't trust them an inch. No info on Thrifty who we have booked though Ryanair, and nothing about optional extras on the Website. I have a phone number that is all. Don't want to risk the same experience as last time. Snow socks could be brought over with us, but are not recommended for proper snow. What do you all reckon? I'll call the hire place if needs, but hate being fleeced as a "distress purchase" ie where you are forced into buying something at a silly price. Does this go down as middle class dilemma of the week?

?600 billion to leave EU? What does EU membership really cost?
malumbu replied to keano77's topic in The Lounge
I paid the equivalent of one Walnut Whip every week from the time of the announcement that we would be host city for London 2012. People whinged and moaned. It was great. It was always going to be great. Not even that bothered of some of the legacy promises that were not fulfilled. Except the use for the ammers. I'm sure that the comparison with the Walnut Whip was not alt/fake news. Other items of confectionary are available. -
Jonathan Coe mixes up Forest Hill and Forest Gate in the Rotters Club - sort of done on purpose apart from he didn't research public transport. Fortunately I had the chance to put him right a few years ago.

An Everton fans' website converts profanities into Liverpool player's names. For example Donald Trump (or Bono or Clarkson) is a right Souness. It amuses me anyway.

Better he come so we can give him a nice welcome. But worth signing the petition to get it debated and show the views of many. On the point of 'many', many in the US agree with what is happeing, and many of those who are maybe more aware of the wider impacts will be happy with a bit of collateral damage if he does make "US great" again, whatever that means. Not that it makes it right.

So if you go into the Plex expecting all of this I am sure you will get it. I am always pleasantly surprised although I do go to some of the less popular stuff. At the end of the run. I suggest that the Plex puts a sign up saying "no East Dulwich snobs"

According to the Archers we could have Polish lamb flooding the markets in a few years so clearly all is well.

PS memory was from the first edition of Shoot, when KK had just joined as a oolumnist and talked about being overwhelmed and sitting on a dustbin. Just realised 44 years later it was a publicity stunt. What happened to Shoot, and Goal? And the NME and Timeout whilst I am at it.

And for once I am being serious.

Well done! But I imagine that is a rarity. And he sounds foreign too. What about a Roy Race or Nicholas Jarvis? Someone who gets the bus into training, eats fish and chips, drinks bitter, and smokes Players, and then returns back to his digs where he helps the widdow landlady with her domestic chores. Here's one I remember from my childhood. http://www.lfchistory.net/images/keegan.kevin/trash.jpg (Yes I know Deli Ali isn't foreign)

To change the subject in this transfer window why do premier teams no longer look to the lower leagues, and the one North of the border. Instead buying players out of sorts from other prem teams, or more likely CSKA Moscow. Yep I know that we are pretty rubbish at developing home grown talent but where are the Keegans and Mariners nowadays. Is Vardy the exception?

It seems to be cool to walk at a snail's pace in front of busy traffic. Not sure if this is because they are hard or they are on something. Ketamine? Funny that I seem to have three times the energy of some kids a third of my age. Obviously a minority but please enlighten me. The title is, of course, facetious. There are many postive things. Why do I need to put in a disclaimer?

Useful article on May's position and the impact of domestic politics - she can bring down the economy but will still win the next election. It's a proper article not fake news. Could equally go in the Corbyn thread. http://www.globalgovernmentforum.com/mays-hard-brexit-starting-position-or-ultimate-goal/

24th January marked the day that Easyjet took over South terminal Gatwick. 15 years ago this was the preserve of BA, and others used North, which was full of charter flights. South at that point was far more upmarket. I flew with Easyjet on that day. It was fine. The plane was fairly new. They've put new seats in to give you a few more cm leg room. Last time I flew with BA it was a tatty jumbo. The audiovisual was playing up. They used to be my airline of choice. They rescued me from India 20 years ago. They once over booked, but were so so generous when we were not allowed to fly. I could take hold luggage on short haul and get the odd beer or two. All gone, and generally more exspensive than EJ. The Airline I really hate is Ryanair, and still being stonewalled over a commpensation claim. Help please.

Can we refuse to enter into a trading deal with Trump?
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
There's of course no likelihood of this happening but in these days of 'brave' decisions and uncharted territory why can't we take a moral high ground and restrict or stop trading with the worst offenders. Heck we don't trade with North Korea do we? Perhaps we need a referendum?! -
Perhaps Southwark can do similar on Rye Lane

Trouble is people like us (certainly me) did not get the government of our choice (I'd have been revealed if we'd had more of the same, irrespective that I didn't vote for either of them and Lib Dem traitors). So the fall out was that there needed to be a change in the Labour Party. I expect the majority of labour members would despise much of the liberal educated informed metropolitan etc discussions going on here and give this as a reason that we needed JC. JC can speak impressively but i don't disagree with most of the views on here. As for SK, didn't he propose JC in the first place? He's a diamond geezer, God know's how he's going to balance the TfL books, and he is opposed by that Shit Grayling. So the Tories very cutely targeted the right people with consumer data from their good mates in retail. Some of the better Lib Dems with good majorities were stabbed in the back by their electorate. This led to an unnecessary referendum, the rise of popular-ism, a lurch to the right/nationalism and the unstable mess we are now in. Well that is my conspiracy theory. Right, I am going back under the covers again. I'll pop up occasionally to read many of the interesting and informative posts. Thanks

Grey squirrels are our friends as well as starlings. But not Canada Geese, oh no. No special relationship there!
