The fall and diversification of our (then) big brewers led to the super companies hovering up all the brands such as Interbrew/Inbev and also the large regionals in particular my most loathed, Greene King. Did you know that the Moody Blues (most famous for Nights in White Satin - but did much more than that) were originally called the M&Bs after said Mitchell and Butlers Brewery, I expect you and most people don't know what I am talking about, but a bit of history the 1989 Beer Orders that were suppoed to improve our pubs contributed to many pubs being shut. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beer_Orders It wasn't all due to loss of trade but also running down some pubs as they were worth more as real estate rather than serving the community. Not sure where M&B fits into the great scheme of things in terms of good or the dreadful pub chains. You'd have to be pretty bad to fall to the standards of the former Youngs Estate. Pop into the Blythe or Ivy one night and hopefully you'll get a good idea of how a pub can still serve the community. Best if I reserve judgement for the moment.

I've clocked my first black RR since I've posted, smoked glass windows and a personalised number plate. Taxed and MOT'd (and much older than it looked, those personalised number plates can hide the age very well). No sign of collision damage but I'll keep my eye out. Not sure if my earlier comments were fair on RR drivers or it could be Land Rover Discoveries which also commonly come in black. Anyway whilst I may sound facetious I do hope that something comes to light.

We had a kid's bike stolen ourside the house once, and someone advised me to put notices on lamp posts in teh are. And it worked, bike had been thrown into a garden by naughty teenagers. I met a nice man in Blue Mountain cafe today in Sydenham. Traffic is a bit bad there but I didn't see any stupid women, or men to that point, either crossing the road or cycling on the pavement. That doesn't mean that there would not still be a requirement for overseas labour, and interesting to see Eastern Europeans staffing our fishing boats - not sure if this was selective filming by the BBC but it amused me at the time if the indiginous residents of Hull and Grimbsby don't want to fish as well as work on the land. And please do see my other threads, the one asking for advice on gents shorts is a particularly impressive one. So the council is planning to erect a new bus stop on a new route and have three options. An upper class area, a middle class area, and a working class area. They need to canvas local opinion so go door knocking. They start in the upper class area, no wait a minute, they don't have buses in upper class areas. So they go to the working class area, knock on the door and get a bloody nose. So finally to the middle class area where the householder is very charming. And then complains afterwards to their other half and writes a letter of complaint (fast foward from when the illustrative story was first told to me, and replace letter with e-mail, tweet or community chat room). What's craft English Cider? You get apples, press them, leave them, and drink the product. I drank Bulmers trad in the 80s which was as close as you get to farmhouse cider produced on a commercial scale at that time. It was cheap and strong, due in part to the low end market and cheap production. Now Bulmers traditional is a high end high price highly marketed product that tastes synthetic (to me) due to the processing and perhaps additives. Oh and it is effectively a different company. Unless of course you are talking about the wonderful Bulmers Pomagne, that was us plucky Brits taking on those garlic eating frogs, who had the temerity to take us to court as the product was so wonderful and was better than champagne. Go out of my way to buy cava or any other cheap bubbly when I need to celebrate. Prosecco seemed to suddenly turn up at the turn of the last decade. Personally I prefer a bottle of light Mexican style beer with a lime in the top (I think we called this lager and lime when I was a kid) or other fruit flavoured lager or cider (just like lager and black when we were kids). Is prosecco simply a fad?

Horniman has loads but perleese don't use it as a creche. Others will know what I mean (and others may also be be guilty). Assuming that you are a bloke the dad and kids stuff is fun. Hmm. How long is a piece of string. I'd expect a basic cooker to last 20 years (I think our last one was about 35!). If things last for under 5 years then I get all stroppy. You are in between the two but I go with Trev above and give it a go. There is loads of good advice on the net and sure that someone will advise a good indie repair person. I spose about ?50 for the labour and ?20 for the part? Got our Bosch dishwasher repaired under free second year warranty - so fortunately did not have to have a battle with the retailer about fit for purpose. It was in deed two parts that failed prematurely - and fixed in about 20 mins. TF I didn't have to pay Bosch prices for the call out. Let us know how you get on. May be DIYable but not for me to advise if not in your comfort zone.

66 posts on a thread best placed in the Daily Mail. And an offensive title. I could have a rant about dangerous pedestrians, cyclists and drivers but I can't be bothered. And thanks to the cyclist who didn't give me grief when I tried to dodge traffic by St James Park. Very foolish of me. And it the tables had been reversed and I was on the bike then I wouldn't have been so tolerent. There's a lesson. Last post definitely shows why this should be left to the Daily Mail. Politicians who want to discourage cars. Sadly not enough in my opinion - and charging by the mile (as will have to come one day) is the most equitable way of paying for our roads. More importantly there are far more important threads on this site, such as gents in shorts, and fruit picking. I await your views dear readers!

Oh and the other thing, is the loss of good cellar men/women and managers, because ale isn't where they make the money. Even when I was behind the bar, soft drinks brought in serveral times the profit than the beer.
