What is your budget? Sports clubs eg oncs off of Dulwich Common will be fine, but will not be cheap. Otherwise backroom or upstairs in a pub would probably be cheaper. There must be enough adults to act as door staff/bouncers. That was the condition when we were all having our 18ths.

I don't believe in rubbing people's faces in it, but I'll make an exception this time, to be in a Liverpool pub when Everton came back to 4-4 was one thing and then this:

are there any fairly local pub quizzes on a thursday?
malumbu replied to hellosailor's topic in The Lounge
CPT quiz was the first and the best. But hold on, what is happening? http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,811783 -
I've been directed here as I was ranting about people behaving like sheep on the 'petrol' thread. I was involved in emergency planning for several years and know a fair amount. There were a couple of blips in 2005 to fuel supplies due the the media stirring up the risks of a blockade of depots/refineries, and loss of refineries and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. There was no credible threat, and no reduction in supply, but similar panic buying as we are seeing at the moment. At that time government, working through third parties, helped put out reassuring messages. Those reassuring messages are no doubt still ready at a touch of a button, but for some reason Maude decided to shoot the government in its foot. As for wages, interesting that they sell about ten times more Guardians in East Dulwich than any other paper, yet some of the debate goes into Daily Mail territory (not all I hasten to add). I am sure that many of you are well paid office workers and intellectuals facing daily dangers of getting trapped in the photocopy machine or crushed getting into Pret. So how many of you would say that you were too highly paid, and would give up any of your lucrative pay and conditions. Just asking.

Silly me, I thought it was to debate the sheep like behaviour of the population and the government's clever ploy of taking on the drivers, who of course deliver the fuel, by asking people to risk their lives by hoarding the stuff in inappropriate areas (with sympathy for the poor lady that got burnt). I'd actually taken no notice of what was happening on the streets but on a rare trip to the white bread capital of the world, ak (formerly as) Savacentre, I asked what cars were doing stopped on a row of empty fuel pumps. To find out that they were waiting for the next delivery of unleaded. Interesting as they were only delivering diesel. Thought I'd take a picture, but then decided not worth provoking people. I was buying a picture frame by the way, you never know when you might need one, its better to be safe than sorry, and it can always come useful for firewood if there is a gas shortage. Everyone should be responsible for their own reslience. Anyway thought that twit-ter thing was the best way to get info out and flashmobs forming. (over 15 years experience in emergency planning) I'll take note and start ranting on the correct thread now!

This was not a crisis but a home goal. Delivery fleets do not use the forecourt to refuel but have their own outlets. BBC did their bit to stir it up by that stupid formula - simplistic at the best, misleading and just wrong at the worst. Paxman talked about a hoard of battle-hardened protestors that would blockade fuel depots in 2005. They didn't exist. They still can't resist misinformation 7 years later. And they are the good guys compared to other news outlets. We are truly a pathetic nation, and none of you on this thread have contributed to a proper argument. Prove me wrong. Irony is that there is finite fuel in filling stations, if there is a panic who do we turn to to replinish it? The tanker drivers. Oh. Most people on this site don't need regular use of vehicles in any case and could manage with shanks' pony, public transport or whatever for a few days. I am only ranting as I am an expert in this area, and can't understand the stupidity (in government and across much of the population) that we have seen.

What a cock-up Spent 3 years working on planning for fuel shortages. Rule number 1, keep ministers out of it. Rule number 2, if you say anything, get someone who represents the consumer and reinforce normal buying habits. No point in having your car full of fuel if you do ten miles a month Rule 3, don't use or even think of the word panic. Panic buying = hording, = what unreasonable people did during the second world war. Don't go there. Blair actually learned his lesson about this. Fck know why the new lot did what they did. There would be officials saying "noooooooo" Actually I am sure it was because they were taking on the tanker drivers, trying to be hard. So we have a finite amount of fuel in our forecourts, that has to be, wait for it, refilled by tanker drivers. Duh! Love the lemmings grafati, one of my favourites. Also enjoyed UKDK and one off the M40 Give peas a chance. There was another one along the lines 'for Gods sake give me inspiration' Veteran of the non fuel crises 05 - at least the scaremongering was then caused by Sky news and the Daily Hate (sorry mail) - not the home goal. Probably just blown my security clearance....

Well it is not corrosion, or by the sound of things a leak (thought it could be the pump sucking air in) but some sort of over-pressure (in an unpressured system). The Lotomil didn't help. Still brown water and turned the heating off (brrrr) Suggestions that the chemical flusing may have led to debris that blocked the inlet to the central heating circuit. Man round tomorrow, who tried to advise me over the phone, but on this occasion time to get someone in.

The upstairs rads are not pumped. They rely on the natural circualtion of hot water. It used to be a common way of doing things, honest! Why it wasn't changed to a pumped system throughout when an extension was added 25 years ago I haven't a clue. I also inherited home plumbed gas fittings (boom boom as Basil Brush would say) and similarly interesting wiring. National Grid were called in twice to make the former safe. So there is not a lot of pressure when the CH is working, and the flushing was not done under pressure so I can't see how that would have changed things either. Some pumps suck rather than blow (oooh Mrs), so can suck air into the system. But as said my system is not pumped. The only way I can see my situation happening is by a sudden and rapid increase of corrosion in the system. I've not found anything on line that is specific to my system (lots on similar situations with more modern CH). I can see that this issue is really attracting interest in ED!

Costs a lot and not done on the NHS. Shop around for a better quote (people don't tend to do this) or a more riskier approach is to go abroad eg Hungary http://www.smilesavershungary.co.uk/dental-implant-prices-from-just-399-pounds-award-winning-budapest-clinic-with-over-15000-implants-successfully-placed.htm?gclid=CKTR56P71K4CFcYntAodEnNcew

Looking back it was hardly revolutionary, just a nice catchy pop song. But then anything slightly different was classed as New Wave. And I am being a little unfair on the Members, as although they were thought of as one hit wonders they did some quite decent music. Saw them once with Laura Logic - who? Try seraching 'this perfect day' and 'saints' into You Tube and see what you get.

My water's all brown. See a doctor? It is the cold water from the tank. The central heating header has overflowed into the main cold water tank depositing some nice brown rust into it. Over the last day the upstairs rads have become full of air (well actually hydrogen). Yep I will bleed the system add inhibitor etc. I used a chemical flush a couple of months ago to decrud the rads and pipes. Question I have is why have I suddenly got so much air in the system? Enough to push water up into the header tank till it overflows? No it is not the pump. No it is not the boiler. It is a DIY fitted system (not me I hasten to add) and has always needed care and attention as heaven knows if the idiot who once owned the house had any ideas of properly installing new pipe work (ie to reduce liklihood of air traps etc). I am fortunate enough to know a plumber who often tells me how to fix stuff rather than come round and charge me for doing like. Just interested to know if out there amongst you geeks and neeks, there may be some real men (and ladies) who can give me some good advice.

Venue required in South East for small arts event 12/13 Dec
malumbu replied to KidKruger's topic in The Lounge
Sydenham Garden is an excellent potential venue. It is a Community Garden in Sydenham. They have an in door space and as they also do art therapy it is up their street. And plenty of good street parking. http://www.sydenhamgarden.org.uk/contact I have other suggestions but try them first -
I saw this one day Not sure that it will catch on though

Funnily enough the old Routemaster was almost redudant the day it went into production. They had to stretch the original version and then when single operator buses came on the scene it appeared uncompetitive. They were phasing them out forty years before they actually ended, but I believe that their reliability and simplicity were their saving grace. From a time when bus operators manufactured their own vehciles. Now seems bizarre. They were responsible for a disproportionate amount of pollution. So Boris, for a clever bloke who plays the fool to his own advantage this self-indulgant pro-Daily Mail nonsense is so shallow, and just stinks of the poularist interventionist nonsense that is flavour of the day. 2 weekly bin collection out in the shires? Duh duh goes the game buzzer, central government must intervene. A free for all for the last Olympics tickets - a pain but relatively fair. Duh duh goes the game buzzer, we must give it to those poor souls who were unsuccessful in not one but two attempts, whether they went for one ticket or a 1000, central government must intevene. I think I may have digressed a little. Clearly I am still angry at the toffs who could have spoiled Friday night at the Goose.

Love all the handbags - why don't you just all meet for an old fashioned pre-arranged punch-up say on Forest Hill Road. Alternatively save the pathetic taunts to comments on Yahoo or Eurosports website. Is anyone capable of some decent banter?

Sad to report that some Hooray Henry's were mischievous at Dulwich Hamlet FC on Friday. The good folks of East Dulwich were unprepared for the toffs in a scene that echoed an Oxbridge May Ball. The Champagne Charlies appeared to have had one too many Pimms and decided to let everyone know in no uncertain terms of how lucky the audience were that the ruling classes had decided to mix with the common people that evening. Great credit to the steward and organisers for telling them to politely STFU. The cad's then got angry with some unfortunate couple in the car park telling them that they were so rich that they could pay for the couple to disappear without trace. Well they had already got away with the murder of JFK. Perhaps some of the bounders are reading this. Does this prick your conscience and did you wake up questioning why you had made idiots of yourselves? Or has any normal human emotion been bred our generations ago.

I've had dreadful problems with a Samsung. Amazon sent me a replacement but that is going back as well. Not great dealing with Amazon as they can hardly come out to help. It seems to be incompatible software and/or router (both on the macbook and PC). About a fifth of Amazon purchasers recorded similar problems in getting it to work wireless. There are lots of solutions on the web, but (a) I couldn't get them to work (b) why should I fart around with something that should be plug in and play © I did not want to pay an IT person to fix it, also knowing that it would probably fail again. I've now looked at HP and other printers and there always seems to be a fairly large number who can't get them to work wireless. Now to show I am not a total idiot the PS3 and Kindle worked almost straight away, and we run two PCs and a mac book wireless. Shame as the hardware was good. So it is back to my 8 year old slow, expensive (in terms of ink) but reliable HP Inkjet. Any recommendations of supplier and make? Happy to spend an extra 20% to get technical back-up compared to Amazon.

Daily use of a decent bike (?500 plus) would be at least ?100 for a standard bike shop service (consumables and labour) A new wheel every year or so (say ?100) Pair of tyres and inners (?50) Brake blocks inbetween service (?15) So ?265 before you even think about gears. I need new chain rings, casette and chain once a year - cheapest Campag would be around ?110 Twice a year if you are a courier and you can understand the attraction of single speed. Irrespective of the health and well-being benefits, and savings, once you get hooked on your bike you are hooked and you only want the best for your beast. Dunno what your opinion is based on Heugenot - suspect you are just being provocative. Now what really get's my goat is those of you in your twenties on lovely racers wearing plimsols, flip flops (yes you do see them in summer) or other soft shoes, peddling on the middle of their feet rather than the ball of the foot (soles). Wasting so much energy and buggering up your body at the same time.

I don't know its name, but in the early 90s it sold cut-price Levis, did tailoring, and had a stack of porn mags in the back. Somewhere off Lordship Lane. Black middle aged gent who ran it, said it was a good distraction for blokes out shopping with their other halves. Meanwhile do we have any local shops (or wider) with funny names to compete with: (I've visited the boutique in France, but it doesn't quite live up to its name) http://www.hifiwigwam.com/archive/index.php/t-18022.html

Perhaps those of you who loath single speed bikes, and blame the riders for the financial crisis may wish to take it up with the London club that represents them. They have a forum and no doubt lots of helpful info: www.lfgss.com/ PS my last single speed was when I was 6, but I also rode a lovely postie's bike when doing Xmas deliveries in the 80s.

This is a rhetorical question (or an obvious statement of fact) and needs no reply.

How are we supposed to judge whether supply and demand, and effective competition is working? They were totally unhelpful outside the Forest Hill Tavern tonight so not a good start or bech mark. But with so many outlets selling them surely we can shop around and get a deal. And with the recession (OK East Dulwich is immune to such things) demand, and hence price, should come down. Also interested how many of these outlets are legit! Last year we got one from Homebase (aka Argos) - it was the worst for years dropping all its needles by Xmas. ?25 at the Forest Hill Road Supermarket, smallish, may see if I can get a bargain. They are also open on Xmas day, I like thi spalce
