re riots - should we be active and on the streets?
malumbu replied to danmaitland's topic in The Lounge
Had my essential posting on the peckham thread (nice and quiet tonight) but Kit Malthouse is a complete arse. GinaBean - Daily Mail readers welcome in Tunbridge Wells, and very safe. Alternatively it was very safe in the East before the collapse of the iron curtain. Not a lot of personal freedom but safe for the majority Do any other readers have a problem with Bing, which seems to be the default search engine on IE9. Now that does make me angry. Please can we be proportionate. -
Peckham very quiet, sad about the clothes shop that was burnt down and not overly bothered by Tesco. Low profile policing and had a chat with some of the officers. Impressed by the tribute outside Poundland. Hopefully that will be it. Think despite how bad it has all been some over-reporting and also the rumour mill hasn't helped.

Unnecessary heating of the atmosphere (aka patio heaters)
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Get a eco friendly patio heater (they are called braziers) you murderer of polar bears. A curse of mosquitos on you. If you are in the pub and need a fag just put your coat on and go outside. Not exactly rocket science is it? -
Very quiet in Forest Hill tonight, but the music did finish early at the Foresters and last orders early. That is Monday for you.

Hmm, wonder what my cycle in tomorrow will be like! At around 7pm there was 50+ kids by the library swarming. Rye Lane was blocked off, but cycled through the first part before being sent around the houses (ie the one-way). Almost bumped into two kids whilst cycling by the library, not at all threatening though. Was around in 1981 when the environment was so different. Perhaps I am just getting old, as I didn't see this one coming.

Shame about AFC Wimbledon yesterday, but they are setting a good example for FC United to follow. Come on you Red Rebels

DON'T ELL has led to people out of Borough (I stereotype them as Bromley Bankers) blocking our roads. It will lead to a CPZ. And for a change I do know what I am talking about.

And another thing... Patio Heaters only seemed to appear following the smoking ban. What a waste of hot air. So tonight it is baking, 25 degrees mid evening. And what do the chuckers to at my sports club? sit outside with the bally patio heater on. I thought of just stripping naked to prove a point. I've written to the club manager who always has a clever answer. I'd like to have reduced subs to take into account that they are wasting my money heating up the atmosphere. Put a bloomin jumper on if it gets chilly. I'm dreaming of cutting the pipes to the butane tank, or gluing up the mechanism. Any sensible suggestions. Perhaps I should start a rant on a community web site! And just to explain, they are gas guzzling global warming Clarkson conspiracy theory types in the outer-boroughs, not us right-on bleeding heart lefties and liberals. (And before any clever clogs but-in, global warming is only a theory, but a pretty persuasive one, and the risks assoiacated with not doing anything outweigh any counter-argument) And yes there are eco ways of keeping warm outside on a chilly night such as this.

First up, I believe that many motorists are irresponsible, therefore we need speed controls and enforcement. Secondly I know that most motorists haven't a clue how to drive on roads with these. Speed up, slow down, speed up, slow down. Oh what fun I had on Court Lane overtaking a Chelsea tractor (or in my words a tank) in my forty years old car. So this is how you drive, keep up a steadyish speed, ease of the throttle in-between and then slightly accelerate just before the bumps, which helps to spread out the impact (there is a more technical explanation no doubt). So I do Court Lane between 18 and about 22mph, smug that I am loosely keeping to a sensible and appropriate 20mph, but even more smug that I have burnt out a car forty years newer, worth 15 times more than mine.

Now the various postings on Kingsdale and cheating have been locked I am unsure where to post. Personally I found the debate interesting, and I cannot see how that could have prejudiced an investigation because at the end of the day I assume that this and other commmunity sites have disclaimers. I can't see it being like the tabloids covering the Jo Yeates' murder. I admit that I am quick to jump on the anti-Kingsdale wagon. Not for jealousy I hasten to add, but their agressive marketing tactics leave me feeling rather uncomfortable. I also see some 'Stepford Wives' (not my original thought I am sad to say). I suppose I will be able to judge in a few years time. And apologies for not posting for such a long time - some nasty virus poohed over my browsers.

Do you live on a steep slope with little ones?
malumbu replied to apenn's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Disappointed for the lack of abuse I received - I thought that I would have stirred up a debate on the gentrification of Horniman Heights. Funny thing is of course that I am very active in the community and enjoy a discussion. I just believe that there has to be diversity in the community and whilst I have been amazed at the tranformation of East Dulwich over the last 15 years there is always a downside. Despite my criticms of SE23.com, which does not allow free speach unlike the EDF, there were good debates on SE23.com in the past about SE22 vs SE23. Perhaps you may understand why I have issues over the demographic changes in the Horniman area, with what appears to be extensions going up every other week, some (not all) of which are awful. As for the snow, we've had a couple of freak winters. From 1997 - 2008 we only had one or two snowy days Anyway, perhaps someone can direct me to the relevant soapbox on this site. -

The only other problem with the area is that dreadful SE23.com -

malumbu replied to apenn's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Live on a slope near Horniman with family for 13 years, from birth onwards. No problems with the slope. Never even thought of it. Only problems are the yummy mummies moving west from East Dulwich, and East from Clapham and beyond to the area. Bringing their four wheel drive tanks. And the contstant bloody building work with more and more grandoise designs. So if it is just the hill you are bothered about move in. If you tick any of the boxes in my second paragraph go and live somewhere else. Notting Hill, Hoxton or Hampstead. PS excavation in the unstable geography that is Horniman heights is just plane daft. -
My first year was 84, only about 30,000, sunny, sit on the grass and the hippies came round selling 'red leb' 'acid' 'speed'. Four years later it was organised drug dealers and much more threatening, and the new age traveleers were getting more unfriendly. Which is why the police were called in. But their gig was pretty bad, probably owing to the spat between sting and the others. Also saw half man half biscuit on the second stage. Please change the name of this thread to Glasonbury.

Agree with the lot of you. But it wasn't that busy when I went. I liked the way it was divided up quality wise. Of course it is Austin's court or whatever now (one of the letters once dropped off) and just down the road you have the former c-op building that was knocked down and turned into flats ironically with a cheque cashing place and Tescos Metro taking the retail ground floor. Peckham has loads of gems, I came into the area too late, not that I am unhappy with the eclectic mix now. Shame the Peckham Society are only interested in a small cross section of society.

Simple thing is not to let a decent bike out of your site, and use an old one in other situations. What a sad world.

Take it with a pinch of salt. It is not the Daily Hate, the only truly abhorrent daily. The Express would love to be but nobody reads it. Go out to Bromley and they will say "Oh I read it in the Mail so it must be true" I dunno anyone who says I read it in the Grauniad so it must be true. May get a - did you read that interesting/uninteresting article. I am impresssed, I only found this thread by mistake but my fans are calling for me, thanks Frankito.

I like Bob's views I thought everyone had dropped that stupid pyscophantic shortening of the name to Glaso - what a load of wank (first time I have sworn on this forum). Anyway, almost off my soapbox. Some of the new acts will be worth watching, it is a shame that the telly only covers the old farts. I rang the BBC to complain when Paul Macca was on. Also how does an audience that was not born when Blondie were in the charts know all the words? I'm off to Beautiful Days to be a grumpy old man.

So the government is relaxing the rules to allow local authorities to designate 20mph area more easily, which is considered to be a lesser evil than speed bumps. Well Wood Vale is (or was) a designated 20mph area, which also had low speed bumps, that effectively keeps the traffic down to 40mph. What is the answer (starting point in this debate is that there are too many arseholes who drive like madmen/women on relatively narrow roads with parked cars, kids etc. If you don't believe in speed limits and leave that too good citizenship then start your own thread.http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/13062011/36/goodbye-speed-hump-0.html
