  1. I want to buy some mint which I can grow in my garden. Ideally would like a ready grown mint shrub which will continue to grow. Any recommendations where I could buy one locally? Thanks
  2. Thanks - that link to YouTube is a good tip. I took the iPhone cover off but was too scared to start meddling around with it. The button clicks a bit but it does seem a bit jammed. I'll live with it for now, but would like it back to normal.
  3. Had the same problem. I live on champion grove nearer to denmark hill station. Returned from work yesterday to smell this solvent/varnish type smell as soon as I walked in the door and also in the bathroom. Was worried it was gas but got the gas people out and they checked for a leak using a detector but couldn't find one. Might phone environmental health or an electrician next. Neighbours haven't poured any chemicals away but pipes might be interconnected along the street?
  4. Certainly is a concern of mine. We would all be spies for Google!
  5. Got a similar problem. The neighbours are noisy, stomping about late at night (family of six!) At first they were apologetic but they didn't try to be quieter thus we kept on asking them to be quieter. Think they're annoyed at us now - at loggerheads... What can you do but move? Some people are pig-headed and inconsiderate. I always think about Sartre's quote: "Hell is other people"
  6. Thanks so far for feedback. I just prefer macs - although I'm not part of the cult
  7. Hi I'm going to buy a MacBook but trying to decide where from. I've listed some options below. Some are cheaper options but have only 1 year warranty, whilst some retailers I trust a bit more than others to buy a laptop from. Price is important but so is the delivery and care of product. Let me know what you think... Apple (with discount): ?928 (1 year warranty) Apple (refurbished): ?899 Amazon: ?865 (1 year warranty) John Lewis: ?999 (2 year warranty)
  8. We don't need this extension. It's nice being cut off from the tube - that's why some of us live round these parts!
  9. My iPhone power on/off button doesn't click like it used to. I can still turn it on or off if I press really hard but its not ideal. I've heard Apple are extortionate - does anyone know anyone who can repair this locally and for a small fee?
  10. Just phoned John Lewis - apparently all Samsung blu ray players will have Bbc iplayer, Netflix and 4od However, they are sold out of most devices (except for the expensive recorders) but they are bringing in new stock and releases in April/may. Other retailers are available...
  11. Hi everyone I want to be able to watch catch up tv on my tv via a blu ray player. Currently I have a Sony one but only had bbc iplayer and 5od. I need to have at least Bbc iplayer, Netflix, 4od Love film, itv and 5od are optional Can anyone recommend a blu ray player or similar device which will do the job? My friend has a Sony ps3 which has most of these - it's weird that other Sony blu ray players don't have the same function. Any suggestions more than welcome Many thanks!
  12. KidKruger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Some of the Harry and Paul sketches last season > were funny (many were not). Parking Patowayo (and > his black and white cat...awayo) is obscure to me > but funny. I thought some of the series was pretty good. Parking Patowayo was probably the best.
  13. I like Stewart Lee. There I said it. Not everyone's cup of tea with people saying he is smug and doesn't tell jokes. Partly true, however, I enjoy the way he goads the audience (myself included) and breaks down the fourth wall of stand up. He is kind of a throwback to the alternative comedy scene of the 80s, so is different to all the Russell comedians of today. I would recommend to anyone his recent books - a transcript of stand up shows which are heavily annotated and really interesting. I like Richard Ayoade and Matt Holness' Darkplace - that was genius. I'm also a big fan of Larry David's Curb but I am aware of its recycled format. Ok, now for the comedians I don't appreciate: Miranda Hart, Jimmy Carr, Frank Skinner, On the Gervais argument, I liked The Office as many people did. But I think the general perception is he got too full of himself and it was more about him boasting about how great and successful he was and this put a lot of people off. I don't especially like Derek, Extras was ok and whilst the podcasts are good in places - it kind of felt like he was bullying Karl Pilkington...
  14. Hi there I'm going to a stag do and for one of the days we're being asked to dress up as wwe wrestlers because it is the groom's favourite sport/entertainment activity. My idea is to go as a referee but can't find a black and white referee shirt online or offline. Does anyone have any suggestions? There are some in the US but with postage I'm looking at ?40 which is a bit steep for a comedy outfit.
  15. Cheers bigdavid - that's reassuring you have bought many devices from refurbished. It might seem silly but I enjoyed the experience of buying my first mac from the store and buying from refurbished takes the shine off parting with a chunk of money. However the stores are so full of teenagers playing on the devices that you can't actually get a good look at the devices or talk to an assistant. But I digress, refurbished sounds like the option ill go for - just hope that it doesn't pack in after a year! Did you take out apple care at all?
  16. Hi there I'm looking to buy some new glasses frames and would like to buy non branded or original looking specs. There are some good shops such as opera opera in covent garden but charge around ?300-400 for just the frames. They look fab but wondered if anyone could recommend a cheaper alternative either near east dulwich or elsewhere in London? Many thanks in advance!
  17. I'm in my mid/late 20s and first got into Bowie when I was about 15. I still regard Hunky Dory as one of my favourite albums and I also a fan of pretty much everything he has done - in particularly the Berlin albums. I do worry about musical heritage and how we seem to have developed a canon of music (Beatles, stones, the who, Bowie) that is revered to such an extent that modern music is not considered worthy for inclusion. Maybe the death of the album and a truly great period for music set such a high standard, as well as music becoming more diverse and more choice available. I was only about 10 when Definitley Maybe came out but I do not consider it to be a great album (sorry!). What albums of the last 10 years will stand the test of time? Also, back to Bowie, I'm yet to liste to the new album and I am sure it is good but is it actually as good as the reviews are hyping it up to be? Does all his previous success cloud our judgement just a little?
  18. Hey I usually get the 8.04 and find it to be awful - hardly can get on. The very back is probably the best and the 8.19 is really really bad - try to avoid it. I've written an extended rant in the following post about my experience of FCC trains http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1065531
  19. I'm sure it's been mentioned before on the forum but the First Captial Connect trains from Denmark Hill to St Pancs/ west hampstead/Luton in the mornings are terrible. They are consistently late which is perhaps not a surprise. The real problem I have is that the carriages are crammed to the max in the mornings. It's getting ridiculous now and I don't understand how FCC can continue to get away with providing a service like this. Lately I've experienced a few arguments between passengers - often about people refusing to move down or out of the way or for accidentally knocking into someone. Also, what really winds me up is when passengers have no awareness of other passengers who want to get on and don't move down the carriages. It's kind of understandable that people can get so irate when the carriages are quite full and people have little consideration for fellow passengers. What if there was a more serious incident - a fight, a crash or a breakdown on a very hot day? I'm not surprised FCC haven't done anything about it - they don't appear to care about their customers but surely us commuters can ply some pressure on them? Anyone experience the same as me?
  20. Thanks all The bad experience was that the laptop started to slow down dramatically just after a year (and thus out of warranty). My friend just used it for a little bit of music and word files. Perhaps this was a one-off. I am tempted because with a union membership benefit I could get up to about 15% off if I went with Apple Refurbished.
  21. The refurb seems to have been going on for yonks! As others have said the bottlenecks coming in and out of the station is simply awful. Problem is you have the dawdlers who take ages walking out of the station, and have no lane discipline (stick to the left!) and then the impatient types (such as myself) who try to overtake them. There is just not enough space for different people at the station. The main ticket hall is an utter shambles. Only one ticket machine for such a busy station, queues for the machines, ticket kiosks and coffee shop block up the route. Then you also have a tiny antiquated screen with updates of usually 3 pages - so those who want to check for their imminently departing train have to look up and wait for the right page to load. The work on the station should have been finished by September 2012 but has dragged on and it seems like it will never end! What's the hold up?? There's loads of workmen during the day but there is cripplingly slow progress. I can only suspect that there is a lack of funds to complete it. A few years ago Clapham Junction was voted the worst station ... Denmark Hill could soon replace it if work doesn't get a move on sharpish.
  22. Cheers guys - some useful pointers I'm also buying a new laptop - how much storage should it have? Looking at some of the MacBook airs with 128gb but wondering if this is sufficient. I don't have any saved films but probably about 40-50gb of music. Is it wise to save it on the laptop or have an external passport size hardrive and back up stuff on there and load straight onto cloud? Will probably use the laptop for other bits and pieces - saving photos, writing in word/pages and a light use of photoshop and indesign.
  23. Looking to buy a new 13" MacBook Air but baulking at paying at least ?1000. Anyone bought a laptop from Apple Refurbished? I had a friend who had a bad experience but wondered if this was a one off...
  24. Hi there I currently subscribe to spotify which is ?10 per month - it's a good service to have on the go but can anyone suggest alternatives I could use to upload my mp3 collection of music so I can access it from different devices (iPhone, iPad, work computer)? I like spotify because I do come across stuff I don't usually come across, so might be willing to keep it if I could upload my MP3 collection into the cloud and save some selected playlists offline. What does everyone else use?
  25. Thanks camberlou! Went last night and enjoyed my meal very much. Very reasonably priced too. The corkage fee is a bit cheeky and some of the service could have been done with a bit more of a smile, but it was extremely busy! I would perhaps go on a quieter night than a Saturday. It's a tiny restaurant. I didn't like the way people who had ordered takeaway were lingering around our table as we were eating. Would be better if they had a hatch to dispense the orders. Overall I'd recommend it for the food but prefer a slightly more chilled out environment.
