The policy exchange wrote a paper on extending Heathrow, and points out that the planes don't need to start at 4.30 either... http://www.policyexchange.org.uk/publications/category/item/bigger-and-quieter-the-right-answer-for-aviation

  3. Have you found that a wind turbine here would make economic sense? As far as I know it is very difficult to get them to generate anything like a sensible amount of electricity.
  4. That's OK, the German nimbys are planning a complete night flight ban at Frankfurt. If they really want a decent aviation industry in the UK they should build a brand new airport with far more runways in a sensible location, rather than trying to bodge a few more flights into an airport that runs at 98% capacity.
  5. Also, feel free to reply to the current government consultation on, among other things, aircraft noise. http://www2.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/2011-09/
  6. I second Taylor St - great coffee. Senor Chevalier Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Discovered these guys the other day > > http://www.taylor-st.com/ > > Absolutely awesome coffee though a bit of a > pilgrimmage from ED.
  7. It's more concerned with the village, but I believe anyone is welcome to join.
  8. FYI The Dulwich Society also organise garden visits, in case you weren't aware.
  9. Very simple - planes take off with the wind, so if wind at Heathrow is west->east, planes taking off at Heathrow fly towards London (and veer off well before Dulwich), whilst planes landing approach from Windsor direction. The smaller lower planes are those for City Airport (again, west->east wind means they sometimes fly over Dulwich to land)

  11. 1) London has been the best performing area for houses for months - although Halifax/Nationwide report small increases this covers the whole of the UK. If you look at the regional breakdowns, London is up quite strongly (over 5% according to the last govt stats). Indeed even if you look at the country-wide numbers from the Halifax they currently under report current house price increases, as the seasonal adjustment they apply pulls the actual numbers down. 2) Is the economy that dire in London? As far as I can see there are plenty of highly skilled jobs on offer.
  12. The thing is that there's no real need to put up with it; the government could make some pretty simple changes which would have a large impact, e.g. - steeper landings: London City planes land at 5 degrees, Heathrow land at 3 degrees. The difference would be that planes fly over Dulwich at 7000ft rather than 4000ft. Even if they made it 4 degrees it would make a significant difference at our distance from the airport. - more variation of flight paths: if paths were varied enough such that people got 2 weekends out of 3 plane-free I think they'd be pretty happy. Of course if they really wanted to sort Heathrow they'd build a new Boris-port in a suitable location by the coast where the noise wouldn't bother anyone (as they'd land over the sea); and the airlines could fly as many flights as they wanted with fewer delays, etc.
  13. I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask for less night flights (most airports in Germany, inc Frankfurt, have a complete ban and it doesn't seem to have hurt their economy) or for flights to be more widely dispersed over London when landing. There are no technical reasons for planes to have to fly over Dulwich to land at Heathrow, they could just as well jet north over Epsom and do a hard bank left at Twickenham (as anyone who ever flew into the old HK airport will attest to). I always found it's best when submitting things to the government to do it as a group though, so perhaps it would make sense to post a draft response up and allow others on the forum to sign it?
  14. We're thinking of getting a nanny (either live-in or out, and are happy to do a nanny-share) from September for our 2 month old, but as my wife is a teacher we only need someone for term times. Does anyone know if this is possible, or do most nannies prefer work for the full year? Thanks, - Steve
  15. My son was born yesterday, and I wanted to get a copy of The Times and/or Telegraph to keep for the occasion. Unfortunately due to the time I couldn't get hold of one. As such, if anyone has yesterday's copy I'd much appreciate it.
