  1. Straferjack: nail---->head
  2. Most (all?)of those actually in the NHS (from top to bottom) are opposing this bill. That means quite a lot to me, as they are the ones delivering the service. If they think the plans are unworkable and will lead to a breakdown of what we have, then its worth taking note. I dont think you can apply starbucks type management goals to something as unique and perhaps delicate as the NHS, imho.
  3. Loving this. Lots of truth in there. Local-ish too.
  4. Well I'd be very happy about spending my fortieth in the countryside on a (hopefully) nice spring day:) An easy-ish couple of places to get to would be: Start at Woldingham train station (45mins or so train or car) and walk up to great church wood via church road, returning past woldingham school. Takes about 90 mins or so, maybe a bit longer. Another really nice bit of countryside is happy valley near Coulsdon south station. Start near the station and go up ditches lane onto farthing down and then drop into happy valley and explore, it really is beautiful up there! I think you can get a direct train from Honor oak for this one. If you have a look on google maps you can see the routes Im describing.
  5. Thats a very, very nice list of bikes, feel very sorry for you.:( I will keep an eye on the mtb sites I visit for anyone selling. It would be worth posting this on southerndownhill, I can sort this if you want. I would also be scanning gumtree daily if I were you. Its likely that (as high value bikes) these will be shifted up north to be sold so dont just search in London. Also keep an eye on ebay. Good luck.
  6. This happned to me too. I think it was accessing my account from an unsecure computer that caused it, not a virus on my home pc. Changed password sorted it for me too.

The tw@s you see bombing red lights with tiny bars, rolled up jeans and wearing a rapha courier bag arent really trying to emulate track cyclists, are they? Sure, track bikes have only one gear and have been around for longer, but its not the reason everyone rides these stupid things. Still, anything that gets people onto two wheels must be good i spose.
  8. Agreed, fixies (but not singlespeed) are not fit to be on the road imo, at least the state of the bikes that I see some people riding. Five inch wide handlebars... wtf? I know its for squeezing through gaps etc, but how does that work when your waist/shoulders are at least double that eh(?) Imagine trying to drive a car with a steering wheel the size of beermat:-S
  9. Slow over here tonight, 10 seconds+ to load a page. I go to graphics heavy sites to check its not my connection (bbc/ebay etc) and they are as fast as you like.
  10. We found it hard to get insurance on our flat when we bought it as there had been a previous claim relating to subsidence, but eventually got both buildings and contents insured through Towergate.
  11. I personally would not want to live in that area. Its too far from the better parts of se15 (bellenden etc) and I wouldn't want to be about on foot late at night in what is pretty much the middle of the North Peckham estate. All imo, of course, I'm sure someone will correct me in a mo and tell me its lovely.....
  12. Dj sums it up well I think Otta. Most hip hop these days IS this type of bully-boy drivel, and its made by kids who aspire to the "thug life" idea that 50 cent sold them. If you actually understand the lyrics, I dont see how you can say this is just kids having fun.
  13. Well I frequently take relaxing strolls in the park and have done for years, so maybe the difference is I dont have an irrational fear of bikes, and that I appreciate the space is for others to share and not just mine. I can understand there is a minority that will always spoil it, and ride too fast etc, but in all my years of using the park, I have not experienced these bike terrorists. In Dulwich park you've got those three wheeled things that kids will zip about on, weaving in and out of pedestrians; many times I've had to stop in my tracks because he/she is getting too close/is slightly out of control but I just smile and let them pass, and everythings fine:)
  14. A well painted piece can really lift an area. The mural outside Brockley station is a good example, and seems to keep taggers away. Or at least stops them tagging over it out of respect? Tagging looks sh1t, always has done, always will. And as for scribing on bus/train windows, my god thats the lowest of the low. Would love for the perpetrators of that sort of kak to be made to PAY for replacing the windows which I'm sure arent cheap.
  15. Really good advice from applespider. The one bit I'd stress is being aware of whats going on behind you. Being able to frequently glance behind (making eye contact if you can) without swerving or straying into the road takes a while to get the hang of. Awareness is the one over-riding thing that will keep you safe imo. As for a route to Croydon, the direct route is via Palace, which is a nasty climb both ways for a commute. Might be better trying honor oak cemetary/brockley/sydenham/west norwood as a flatter way to go.
  16. Having cycled in many places in the world, I have learnt that in this country people have an irrational fear of being hit or injured by cyclists. The statistics from djkq bear this out. Just pop over to France or Germany and see how the attitude is different. I would love to see how the op would get on in Amsterdam. Yes, people there do use bells more than we do, but as a pedestrian you have to be much more alert to riders than you would on peckham rye. The fact is if I go for a stroll in the park, I am far more likely to be injured by a dog than I am by a cyclist. Am I bleating for all dogs to be muzzled to protect me from this threat? Because that is how the op comes across to me. Get a grip, I say.
  17. Well, its turned the wood darker than it was un-oiled. Coudnt say how it compares to danish oil, but it looks nice and rich to me now. I've done two coats and will do another couple over the next few weeks. I got it from Labro in Nunhead. The only way to protect the wood without darkening it would be varnish I guess, but I've been told that's a bad idea as it cant be patched if you mark the worktop and need to sand; you will see a seam where you revarnish. With that in mind, i've also decided to do my kitchen floor with tung oil as well, how good an idea that is we will see after a year or two:-S
  18. I used pure tung oil on ours, that looks good too. We got the stuff (40mm thick prime beech) off ebay for about ?240 for 6 metres, including delivery. Wickes/bnq/homebase will charge around ?600 for this much. Cant comment on durability as we've only just put them in, but it only takes about half an hour tops to lightly sand and slap another coat on the whole lot.
