  1. Camelot can be quite a nice place if Sir Lance-a-lot and Lake-Lady join in. Hellava job pulling Excalabur out if Arthur's not around.
  2. Methinks 'Come and see my King Arthur in a magic light box' is just a technology upgrade to 'Come and see my etchings by candle-light'. Girls, beware of Excalabur, you may get a sharp tip.
  3. Good business idea but seriously watch your overheads. You can only do so much needlework in one day which will limit your potential income. Maybe Northcross Rd, Crystal Palace Rd, Grove Vale, Belleden Rd would be better than the higher rents in Lordship Lane and the premises better suited in size. Good luck.
  4. Quote Dulwich_Park_Fairy :- My understanding is that a small group of Parent Governors are behind this initiative and very much question the legitimacy of what they have done. Quote Fuschia :- I guess governors will recruit later on with a headteacher who is keen to run an academy. Maybe this time the 'self appointed inner circle' on the Board of Governors will work with the appointed head of school in all respects.
  5. Mrs Shirley Patterson resigned today (15th July 2011) as head of Goodrich School. She made the announcement after school.
  6. edhistory I've just had some wins on the Lottery (not the ?1.61m I hasten to add, not even six figures) but enough to buy a new scanner, so when up and running would very much enjoy swapping notes / photos. Perhaps we could choose to re-introduce this branch line as a new 'Thread', with photos if interest continues. Do you know of, does anyone have any previously unpublished photos? Thanks again for your 'historic' Threads.
  7. oops ed I've got a copy of that photo from the original negative and I think when you cropped it you also flipped it. I compared it to the 1870 and 1916 edition os and its definately drawn the other way round. I've got lots of photos of all the stations but unfortunately can't attach them at the moment because my old scanner refuses (even with updated drivers) to work with Windows 7. If you are interested I could post or PM them together with some maps at a later date when copied.
  8. This is fully covered on Thread by edhistory "where was Dulwich 1906" on General ED issues / gossip including history and photos if you are further interested.
  9. Electrified (3rd rail 600 volt) 12th July 1925. Attached photo shows 4sub unit approaching Lordship Lane station on the up line. In the background, can just be seen, Cox's Walk footbridge. This is the original bridge which has been replaced now with a replica.
  10. The Crystal Palace Loop, as it was known, reached a peak in 1911 with 98 scheduled journeys per day with additionally 'Specials' at most weekends (some coming across various networks from other parts of the country). c2 million passengers a year were served. It was closed for WW1 economy measures 1.1.1917 to 1.3.1919 and never recovered the previous passenger totals because the Crystal Palace had declined in popularity. The Crystal Palace having been destroyed by fire on the night of 30th November 1936, the railway no longer had any real purpose to serve, the Lower station being able to easily cope alone with commuter traffic. It was closed again from 21.5.1944 to 4.3.1946 for WW2 austerity measures. After this second war-time closure and as the result of war damage and neglect, the loop was in a very poor condition. Coming under the control of British Railways in 1948 its very poor passenger figures, the decline of freight services to the goods yard and overall state of repair, the decision was made to close it. The last scheduled train ran on Saturday 18th September 1954 and on the following day a special train was run by local enthusiasts, the fare being 6 shillings. ***I suppose there was such a lack of local interest no-one was bothered, particularly with the extent of war damage and lack of housing etc at that time. It was said that there were more rats than passengers at the stations.
  11. computedshorty has very kindly attached a photo of Lordship Lane Station. It was taken in 1922 from the up platform and reveals some of the intricate architectural detail that was demanded by the Dulwich College Estate, on whose land the station was constructed. (National Railway Museum) Post war, due to bomb damage, the canopies had gone and there was a corrugated iron shed on the up side platform. The ornate lanterns were gone and the station was generally in very poor condition. The last scheduled train ran on Saturday 18th September 1954 and on the following day a special train was run by local enthusiasts, the fare being 6 shillings.
  12. civilservant. Your experience of schooling in the 'third world' contrasts vividly with my own. I returned last year after helping to set up a school in a very poor country. All we had to start with was local Christian donations and a container full of second hand school seats, desks, books etc. Fortunately an American church came on board and we could get things moving along better but staffing is still a real problem. I will admit that the big difference between Church Foundation Schools in these countries is that they will accept any child regardless of religious background. The Church of England have revised their policies in this respect. The RC I will admit are still reticent. The RC children will continue to receive religious indoctrination (other peoples phrasing) regardless of any school they may attend. I will admit that St Anthony's would be better if it had a more 'open house' attitude but that still doesn't divorce us from the fact that they are achieving very well (in fact far better than their nearest state competitor) and that stands as credit to the school and a credit to ED. Logistically I don't know where the children would be placed if it were to be closed. All the local schools have been converting store rooms, ICT rooms, cloakrooms, to try and find space to accomodate the 'bulge' classes without having another c300 children thrown into the melting pot. Reading Politicians please note that as previously suggested it would be supported, if public funding was approved, that the school, as a condition of the funding, should actively admit other faiths locally. I totally disregard the tattle about parking as applied to St Anthonys in particular. Every school is a mad house of cars am / pm and I hate urban 4x4 more than anyone. We could start a new Thread on that topic perhaps. Third world exploitation I didn't mention because it leads too far from the post but I am sure, civilservant, that we will agree on that point, in all its disguises, even if we disagree elsewhere.
  13. On 1st August 1865 the London, Chatham and Dover Railway opened a branch line to Crystal Palace (high level) station (now demolished). There were no stations at the time of the opening between Peckham Rye and Crytal Palace. The intermediate stations were completed soon after with the exception of Nunhead which was opened on 18th September 1871. The branch started from Nunhead running through Honor Oak, Lordship Lane (opened 1st September 1865), Upper Sydenham, Crystal Palace (high level) stations (all now demolished). Thanks again edhistory for more interesting history / maps.
  14. Strictly everything that can be re-cycled should be re-cycled. The green bin is only for waste that can only be disposed of by landfill. I have the same problem. Fortunately I speak to my neighbours so have borrowed four brown bins to get rid of the extra garden waste. Use the green bin and 1. They may refuse to empty it. 2. You may get a written or verbal warning. 3. You may get a fine. The attitude of the Council at the moment is one of help and encouragement so probably at the worst you would just be advised unless you are a commercial organisation.. Hope that helps.
  15. I wonder how far sillywoman's faith hate extends quote; "I'm completely against faith schools in all their forms." Virtually every school in the 'developing world' (politically correct phrase for those extremely poor, suffering countries) are church foundation, relying on their pitiful existence almost entirely on charitable giving from their sponsoring church (of any denomination). Would sillywoman (and the other Faith Haters) also seek to remove these in their 16th century quest of sterile educational world domination and deny millions of children worldwide the privilage of even basic reading and writing?
