why bother to restore Peckham town centre's historic buildings?
jimmah replied to Eileen's topic in The Lounge
Had a look at the exhibition today and its really good, I've wanted to get inside the waiting room for ages. Interesting to be able to see how the roof was put together (from the inside) also liked seeing the trains coming up the track from the windows at the front, you can see quite a long way up. It will definitely look better when the front is open but I think the commercial units at the sides are a bit heavy and still block the frontage a bit. It would be cool to have everything open all the way to the Groves either side but I suppose keeping the commercial income is unavoidable. What about if the front of the units was angled back as it comes towards to the station then you could see all the victorian bit without any interference. I don't like the idea of metal and glass either especially if shops keep the stock upstairs and all you can see through that glass is piles of boxes and junk. -
I love the idea that there was once someone of 109 who could just about remember boats reaching as far as St Marys Church whereas now you would have to be about 109 to even remember St Marys Church itself! BTW there is a really good description of St George's Fields in Barnaby Rudge. I think it talks about the Circus being in the middle of acres of open land.

I would like to see a revitalised Nunhead Forum. I also don't mind adminning either if that's all thats lacking on there.

Its not really lost though, it's all being auctioned off so any enthusiast/member of public can buy and own it. If they want a piece of history it's there for the taking. Inevitably technology changes so this stuff would still have ended up being disposed of, what's more of a shame is that the lease was surrendered at Bush House. That's the biggest shame. BTW if a government turned off the internet surely people would just make their own radio broadcasts (like pirate radio days)

Not sure this is a lounge issue but anyway: Samsung
jimmah replied to dulwichgirl2's topic in The Lounge
I got the S2 and love it, seemed a lot more user friendly than the Iphones that colleagues had and few of them have come over too. My boyfriend has the S3 now but to my mind it doesn't seem to offer anything that my S2 doesn't have. The clincher for me when I was upgrading was that Iphones had more expensive deals because the phones were so desirable, with the samsung you could still access cheap priceplans. -

Concrete House Lordship Lane - Public Inquiry

Yep I'm with Sue I like the house, and it's really made my day that Southwark have managed to give it a future. Good luck to the new developer who I hope will make a success of it. -
A massive frog behind my house, I'm hope he's not gobbled up by a fox.

Look up and you can see the moon including the part in earth's shadow, and the two planets AND a plane or maybe a satellite right right up in the sky miles away (its moving really fast)

That's a great little film, where are they at the start of the film though (before Rye Lane) You know that whole website is full of unbelievably cool videos and pictures, look for the Heathrow ones before the airport. thanks for sharing this - that's my Friday night sorted!!

One of those houses looks like it was huge, maybe number 59. Have you got photos Veejay I would love to see what it looked like there especially the fountain.

Planning permission - how??? Neighbour from hell
jimmah replied to Mabel2001's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
you could put some containers with trailing plants on top of that coffin thing which should disguise it a bit. Maybe some alpines in the cracks between the paving slabs would soften the front too. It does look stark at the moment but it will weather in, I think painting milk on stone encourages moss and things to grow. Even small pansies will root in at the edges. I know that doesn't solve the council issue but it will make it easier for you to look at. -
Energy Saving initiative includes East Dulwich

I'll add my thanks to Sue for sharing this. I made an appointment and had a guy round today who has fitted the reflective radiator panels. He also brought the electricity monitor which will no doubt give us hours of entertainment as we plug things in and out It is a really good service and very easy to arrange. -
Bubble and squeek - east dulwich road
jimmah replied to Thomas Micklewright's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There is a PapaJohns in Lewisham. Made a special trip there to try them out because the TV ads looked really good and they did buffalo wings. The pizzas are pretty good, they are something like a Dominos but maybe a bit posher. Their garlic dip is a bit weird though, it's not the creamy stuff but melted garlic butter and a bit sickly after a while. The buffalo sauce isn't the same as I had in the US but still good. If they open up here I will be happy! -
I back the Southampton Way route too, I ride to Oxford Circus everyday and take Soton Way then cut through Addington Square and Bethwyn Rd to Kennington and then Lambeth Bridge to Parliament Square and up Regents Street. There's no traffic apart from the Regents Street bit.

Thanks for explaining east of the Rye, you are right about the junction. I think an extra roadsign would just add to street clutter and its doubtful whether it would make a difference to cycling habits (good and bad). I wonder if parking restrictions on the eastern side of the park might add to speed problems, currently people are forced to moderate their speed simply because of the chicanes made by parked cars. If the road was clearer surely people will incline to drive faster.

This plan seems really well thought out I like it. Am I right in thinking though that there is already a cycle bypass going south from the lane? I use one in front of Austin Court. Slightly off topic, the crash outside the Rye Hotel the other week seems to have wiped out the red telephone box, I'm pretty sure this was listed, does anyone know if it will be replaced and how?
-
You can also try Foyles on Charing Cross Road, they have taken over the language specialists Grant and Cutler and have all the french language books you could ever need.
-
This thread is really interesting, I always wondered what preceded Austin Court, does anyone have pictures of it before it was demolished. I would like to join the Peckham Society but it seems you can only pay membership by cheque, and I haven't had a chequebook for donkeys! Slightly off the topic but I don't know if anyone knows the story behind the burnt out blue house/shop next to the Co-op building, what was that and why is it a wreck?
-
There is still a footpath through there between the flats and the park. I don't know if it is still called Snake's Lane though.

Peckham Rye Park - a question from 1902
jimmah replied to edhistory's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think there were some houses in the area where the oval flowerbed is now, and I think they were demolished in the 30s. Could it be these? -
It was end of term for the young ladies at Harris Girls Academy.

I'm looking forward to the reopening, I've never been inside and always wondered what its like. It's pretty much my local (that or the Rye)
