Toddler with car sickness - any tips?
lucyA1308 replied to Susan's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I do remember sitting on newspaper when I was little. Perhaps it is a cunning trick from adults who want to keep their car seats clean, but actually I do seem to remember it stopping me feel sick. Def no looking at books. Keep the window down and looking straight ahead always helped me. Poor little one, it is not fun. -
I was just wondering if anyone has as much difficulty with their bank as I do if using a married name and a maiden name. my professional name is my maiden name, but because my mortgage and joint savings accounts are in my married name, I wasn't allowed to have my current account (at the same bank) in my maiden name. They did however say that they would put a note on the computer to say it was ok for me to have cheques made payable to my maiden name. This seems to have been wiped off the computer, and as I have just returned to work after 9 months on maternity leave, it hasn't been an issue for a while. I am getting quite frustrated with the bank, and surely in this day, people can understand that women might have 2 different surnames. On Friday, I was quite happy to stand my ground, because I had been in on Tuesday and successfully cashed some cheques under my maiden name, but the cashiers were also standing their ground too, and the queue which was forming was becoming rather impatient and aggressive, so I had to leave with my cheques un-cahsed. Does anyone else find it difficult, or do they have a more understanding bank?

Hello there. I just wanted to say that you don't need to panic. Probably like you, after about 9 months / 1 year of trying (healthy and young, non-smokers, didn't drink much etc), we (ok, I) began to worry. After about a year, I went to see the GP. He said that we had to be trying for over 2 years before we would be refered. We then went to see a different GP (same practice, but I took my husband for support, who was slightly less emotional about it all, and the GB was a obstetrics specialist). He then said he would refer us to the ACU at Kings. The ACU was going through some admin difficulties, with a backlog of corresponance, and various staff away (probably maternity leave, ironically enough) so that whole process took about another 9 months, before we finally got a letter from Kings ACU. The letter said that when my next period began, I had to come to the ACU for a check-up, and some tests, and then they would take it from there. I was just checking my diary, to work out when my next period was due, and realised that I hadn't had it. I did a pregnancy test, and hey-presto, I was pregnant with my 1st child. We had probably been trying for 2 years without sucess, and then finally when we had given up hope of letting it happen as nature intended, it did. Sometimes, when you stop worrying about it, it will happen. Our 2nd child happened all too quickly. Sometimes your body needs a bit of time to work these things out. Especially if (like me) you have been using some hormone contraception for a long time. Good luck, but also do relax. Enjoy all the things you might not get a chance to later. and actually 1 year is not so bad. I have friends who have concieved naturally after much longer than that.

Making bottles up in advance question
lucyA1308 replied to Strawbs's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I am getting fed up with my little one's 2 hourly need for feeds ( a fairly recent habbit, but one which I realise is not going away anytime soon, unless I do something about it)so I am also trying to work this one out. I have been quite lazy about bottle feeds, and although she will take them, it is so much easier with the boob. (and cosy for her too, which is half the problem) I do remember that for my older daughter we had an Avent bottle bag, which was insulated, so if you made up a bottle at about 11.30ish (an average bed time) then it might stay warm enough until 3.00am. -
Storing breast milk on the go - advice
lucyA1308 replied to spanners45's topic in The Family Room Discussion
It depends how much you value it, and for what reasons you are expressing. If your baby only takes breast milk and you are running low on supplies, then sometime you can pop the jar, or bag in an insulated bag (but I wouldn't do it for more than a few hours, to use when your little one needs it. If you are just doing it to make yourself feel more comfortable, and keep the regular milk supply going, then as they've said above, just express and get rid of it. -
My daughter has also just started at Dulwich oaks. She is very happy there, It is new, and there are definitely spaces available.

When to move toddler from cot to bed?
lucyA1308 replied to mrs f's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We had to coincide it with i) potty training and ii) little sister needing the cot bed. I think my daughter would have quite liked to have stayed in the cot bed, but we thought it would be silly to get another cot bed, if she will be needing a bigger bed in a while any way. The other reason was that during potty training, she would stand up in her cot at about 5.00am calling out I need a wee wee. Now she can get in and out of bed, she obviously doesn;'t need to wake the whole house up to tell us about it. The transition wasn't easy because it made bed-times really difficult now she could get out of bed, but I think we timed it badly re. summer time, and longer daylight hours. When we do it again for her younger sister, I'll remember to do it in the winter months, when it is all cosy and dark. -
Pelvic girdle pain - osteopath, chiropractor or physio?
lucyA1308 replied to MrsLL2b's topic in The Family Room Discussion
hello, yes, I also had this at about 24 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy. A friend was a physio, and I was seeing her anyway that weekend, which was lucky as I don;t think I could have waited any longer. She told me not to cross my legs when sitting, as that pulls the hips apart more, but when sitting, find a chair, which is firm enough, or the floor, and to try doing lotus style position. This is to try to fuse the pelvis back together again. It worked in a few days, and I was back to nearly normal (as normal as a 24 week preggers lady can be) Hope you get better soon. -

I feel sorry for anyone who is in a job for 40 years for what they think they should get out of it at the end of the day. Anything could happen between now and then. Why not remind yourself of the reason you went into the profession in the first place (I really hope it wasn't for the pension) No matter how tired I am after baby teething and toddler antics, breakfast chaos etc. When I get to the schools in which I teach, I am filled with energy and enthusiasm again, because of the energy and enthusiasm which the pupils have. It is a great job. Enjoy it.

toddler and baby playgroups
lucyA1308 replied to SuzanneFreeman's topic in The Family Room Discussion
On Fridays there is a group at All Saints, West Dulwich. It has a group session with a bible story to begin with, and then after that there is free play and craft activities, with biscuits, tea and juice. There are quite a number of helpers without children, who go along to help with refreshments and games, which is great if you have a little baby but also need to keep an eye on the toddler. Plenty of people are happy to give the baby a cuddle if needed. it is called Small Saints and it is free. Starts at 10.15, until roughly 11.45. I am also starting up a group at All Saints. It is a monthly concert series designed for babies and children. The concerts will be informal, but well presented, and lively. I took my two to things like this when I was on maternity leave. Mums can feed the baby, while the older ones dance to the music / sit and listen. Now I am back working part-time, I want to continue this, and so I am setting up my own series.I am a professional musician, and mother of 2 little ones, and so I will book players who I know will work well for children. Tuesday 25th September 10.30am ?6 per adult. First cocnert is a latin and classical guitarist. Ahmed Dickinson. lookout for Playtime publicity. -
No. I am a peripatetic instrumental teacher. I do not have pension schemes, or holiday pay, or sick pay. I love what I do, and I just about survive on the income I get. I am happy with that.

There's early starts...then there's 4.40am
lucyA1308 replied to Belle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm with the early to bed, longer in bed philosophy. WHen I can manage to get supper, bath and bed for toddler and baby done before 7.00pm, they usually sleep much better. The later to bed they are, the earlier they are up, I find. -
My eldest, at around 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 yrs developed what the doctor called Toddler Diahorea. This sounds like what your little one has. It is brought on by too much fruit and fruit juice. My daughter loves fruit, and would have chosen an apple or banana over a chocolate cake every time, and so it was quite hard to hold her back from eating fruit. Even bananas, which when she was weaning had a binding effect, now seemed to have totally the opposite effect. We increased the fibre content in her diet, made sure if she did have fruit juice, it was very diluted, and if she had any fruit, she only had a small amount. She is 2 1/2 now, and seems back to normal now. We still keep an eye on it - I am sure that nothing in excess is ever all that good, but definitely the poos are less spontaneous etc etc.

BYMT in Bromley do something called Little Virtuosi - it is for young pianists. It starts off as a group session doing games, and then developing into more related skills.

The price of toddler classes in Dulwich
lucyA1308 replied to susie22's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I am starting a classical concert series for children (just once a month at the moment though). Tuesday 25th Sept, Tuesday 23rd October and Tuesday 20th November. Starts with Ahmed Dickinson Latin and classical guitar. All Saints West Dulwich, SE21 8JY. 10.30-11.30. 45 mins informal concert, designed for children. Juice and biscuits afterwards. ?6 per adult. -
yes, definitely do it before the sister needs the cot. We were too late, and swapped over when the baby needed the cot, and put the older child in a propper bed. She really didn't like it at all, and for a very long time felt that her bed was still the cot. It wasn't so bad in the morning, but I found the bed times were hardest, because then there was nothing stopping her just getting out of bed. She is fine now, like everything, even if it doesn't work straight away, they do adapt.

breastfeeding 8 month old to sleep
lucyA1308 replied to lucyA1308's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The last few nights, i have been trying the shorter feeds, bringing her off the boob just as she looks ready for sleep, but she then wakes up and is more cross, and so after another test of endurance, I give in and give her a bit more. Feeling totally dehydrated myself now. i have also just spoken to my mum, who has been very strict with me, making sure my toddler learns about good bedtime habbits. She said it is OK to breastfeed the baby to sleep, and they learn eventually. So perhaps I am putting the baby and me through unnecessary anguish when we could just be enjoying a nice cosy feed together. -
Hello there, you will probably see loads of posts here about getting my toddler off to sleep, which she now does brilliantly. I now am having difficulty with the 8 month old. I was determined to get a better sleeping pattern with the baby than I managed with her big sister, that was working well until she became much more active, and standing up in the cot, no matter how sleepy she seems, all she wants to to is get back up again. Her big sister manages to sleep through all this shenanagins now, but I am not doing so well with the baby, and now resorting to breast feeding her to sleep. I did do this for about a year with my older daughter, but all the books tell you this is wrong. We eventually figured it out with the older one, when she could understand that being put down in the cot meant bed time. She was a bit over a year old by this time. My question is this - is it really wrong to breast feed a baby to sleep? I did it 1st time round, and she eventually grew out of it. Or should I be tough now, in order to make the transition from breastfeeding dependency easier later on. Presumably we will have the same battles, she will just be a bit older, and better able to understand. Thanks, lucy

cooked lunches in pre-school childcare
lucyA1308 replied to MisforMama's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Most of the Montessori schools don't offer lunches, which is a shame, because a cooked lunch is always such a nicer option, but many don't have the facilities for this. -
Advice/info from freelancers please - do you make it work??
lucyA1308 replied to jennyh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm freelance. You do get Mat pay, but currently at about ?430 ish per month. You have to have a very strong sense of self preservation. Yes, charge a bit extra (but don't be greedy, or else they will go else where), because of the uncertainty / unpredictability. -
We went to Whitstable on Saturday. It is not the prettiest, but it is very close, and the kids were delighted. It had sea and sand, fish and chips, and lots of happy children. Other years we have gone slightly further down to Broadstairs, which is very pretty, but about double the distance. Have fun

chicken pox- will my eldest daughter catch it?
lucyA1308 replied to echo's topic in The Family Room Discussion
i think it is spread through skin to skin contact. Use seperate bath towels, and try and keep them apart if possible, and your eldest might manage not to get it this time.
