The idea of Women and Children First was only to get them out of the way as they were deemed less (un)able to look after themselves and certainly of absolutely no use in helping anyone else. It was a given, though, that there was plenty of time for all to abandon a vessel and that men would be next and not that 'first' meant only. Not so much 'chivalry' as "Get the bloody women and kids out of the way so we can abandon this ship in a proper and dignified manner!" (before posing in a windswept manner at the railing for heroic photo- or lithographic prints). These days I suspect Claire from Marketing would be loudly extolling the virtues of the (overcrowded) aft lifeboats whilst sidling casually towards the (empty) ones at the pointy end.

Got no work done this afternoon watching KP's fantastic knock of 103 off 64 balls including nine 6s to bring Delhi Daredevils back from the brink (ending on 162 for 5 after they were 27 for 3) to win against the Deccan Chargers - and he won it with a 6 straight down the ground. Really wonderful batting.

This (the poor tactical decisions and the defensive, passive-agressive stance of Allardyce - as a manager not in terms of the team)is why I think it would be great to see PdC given a couple of seasons to build a team, make his mistakes and get promoted with a team that stands a chance of staying up and maybe winning something in the long run. The trouble is I don't think the owners are interested in anything other than trying to get the Olympic stadium and selling Upton Park for development - the football is secondary apart from it being a pre-requisite for getting the Stratford site blah, blah, blah...

I think it must be tooth-ache...

Get rid now and let's have some imagination and flair put back into the club. *In a 'Just thinking...' kind of way - WH once took a manager with an Italian-sounding name from Swindon Town... didn't work out too well but maybe now's the time to repeat the exercise and see what happens...?

Chinese-type Chinese menus (you know what I mean) can be a little intimidating and while I was adventurous enough to consider things like stewed duck's tongue, braised goose web, fish maw, fried snow frog and deep-fried frog skin when I ate at the restaurant in Hong Kong's Silk Market - I drew the line at Baked Fish Intestine With Puffy Egg... this is probably because I am a touristy type of traveller rather than an intrepid worldy-wise explorer man and I do like a bit of sweet and sour glutinous slop now and then...

Congratulations to Reading. So it's probably the play-offs for The Irons. Got a feeling that even if we go up we'll come straight back down but I don't expect Sullivan & Gold will get rid of SA in time to prevent that - they'll be too busy trying to get a dodgy earner out of the Olympic Stadium before selling West Ham on to some flaky Hong Kong holding company.

Advice on holidaying in italy - Venice and the lakes
maxxi replied to uptowngirl's topic in The Lounge
You could try Italia Nel Mondo, a travel agent in Palace Rd (just behind Buck House). When we booked a trip to Venice through them we ended up in a small place near Ca D'oro run by a very nice local family so they may be worth a ring. -
When faced with the gooners I heard it was a 'walk'...

When Poons was in Lisle st. - the room on the first floor with the large round table right by the - usually open - window, wonderful crab... long gone though.

Tut, tut Bhuna - this myth has been well and truly exploded. Goldfish have memories of 10-12 weeks and can - by distinguishing between different coloured lights - even be trained to do tricks. Maybe this one is being trained to recognize dodgy punters...

He could only send him off for violent conduct (it wasn't) or denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity (they scored so that is cancelled out too).

You need to heat it and it will scrape off without scratching or scorching etc. - a hot air paint stripper would do it and shouldn't damage your tiles.

In his delusional fantasy he obviously sees himself as Bond villain Maximillian Largo...http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/87/Maximillian_Largo_by_Klaus_Maria_Brandauer.jpg... if prosecutors start calling him 'Number One' he will admit everything.

I would leave the older stuff (60s/70s glam rock etc) until those of a suitable age have had time to take on sufficient refreshment to cry "Ooh, I LOVE this one... come on darling, let's show these young 'uns how it's done!" A dance floor full of 50 somethings doing the 'Tiger Feet' dance* = job done. *or Daydream Believer/White Riot/Don't You Want Me Baby/Fools Gold depending on age of in-laws.

Parents who think that the moment their brats.. kids... brats are in a shop they can cease to 'manage' them and thus allow them to run amok... I had to scrape three off the sole of my shoe this morning
