  1. Lyme Regis. Beautiful little town, very romantic (The Cobb) great beaches, the ammonite pavement, a walk up to Golden Cap, a fossil walk, booked from the Old Fossil Shop, or from Charmouth fossil centre. Beer is a lovely pretty near-by place to visit and you can hire a motor boat and mackerel line. You can also go on mackerel fishing trips from Lyme Regis. There are nice cafes and smart restaurants, book self-catering accommodation through LymeBay Holidays, or similiar.
  2. Feed him before he gets very tired and hungry Ignore bad behaviour as much as possible - what he wants is your attention. Make a fuss of him when he is sitting nicely, ignore when he shrieks and hits. Just cease eye contact and place him a little way away from you. No point in lecturing him. I don't think this age respond well to 'no', they are only programmed to battle on at that age, otherwise they would never learn to to the things they find hard, they are in 'never give up' mode. If he is eating well and feeding himself, talk to him, engage with him over his meal. If he fusses with it, pushes and throws it and refuses to eat it, calmly remove it, or remove him from the table and set him to something else. Don't battle persuading him to eat. And remember that he will grow out of it.
  3. We bought a large cheap plastic tarpaulin from B&Q or somewhere and covered the whole floor with that, then put bathmats round the pool. It's quite good to have a practice beforehand, putting it up, making sure the hoses reach, things like that.
  4. That's terrifying. (td) to the police.
  5. Heathrow should never haven been sited on the West of London. It was a planning disaster that happened for one particular reason, I can't remember what, but a notable politician wrote about it and said it was one of the major mistakes of his age. The prevailing winds mean that planes come in to land over London, it is an accident waiting to happen. It seemed quieter at 4.30 this morning, I'm not sure if the fog muffled the noise, or delayed the flights.
  6. Telling people you have photographed them and their dog in action can sometimes make them do the right thing. Bloody disgusting. Let your children shit on her front path.>:D<
  7. I don't think scooters are allowed, either. The park isn't as enormous as it seems, and on the way back you can take the Hill Train back up the hill.
  8. I wouldn't bother with Q Bots unless you are going on what is likely to be a very packed day, a summer weekend, or school holiday. If money is no object you may like to get them, but with a 4 year old I'm not sure you want to be dashing from attraction to attraction, there is so much to do and see between the big rides. The trick is to get there early as the barriers are opening, and head straigt through to the back of the park, and do the things you wnat to do most first. For 4 year olds the driving school or boating school would be very good and they do tend to have long queues, so you might want to join those first. Or else go to the far end and do the log flume and the roller coasters as early in the day as possible. You can look at the map of the park online before you go. The 4D films are quite fun for a sit down, the models are fantastic, definitely take a picnic.
  9. The Brierley Midwives did our family proud! They are a team of community midwives operating out of King's.
  10. In my insomniac state I have been monitoring this ever since I saw this thread. There a regular 5 planes that come in one after another very quickly between 4.30 and 4.45, every single night.
  11. Of course not. There would never be one and only 'right' school that the child could attend and still succeed. What a hysterical response it would be. It would put so much pressure on the child. And it would set a bad example and make a terrible role model of you. The home environment is at least as important as the school. Not sure why the taxpayer should support someone on benefits just to get a place in a queue for a preferred school!
  12. If you click on the downloads on the R of the home page it details types of memberships, and on the individual prices page it says 'choice' memberships are available from ?35 per month. I am a member (no idea what category) and have unrestricted (inc peak time) access to gym, facilities, classes and pool for ?43 a month. Irritating that they don't make it crystal clear on the website.
  13. Look at Harris Crystal Palace, Charter, Elmgreen and Dunraven, do your research for the catchment for the one you like best and then move as close as possible to the school. Dunraven and Elmgreen have some of their catchment in common. Then consider Kingsdale as a back up option - it admits on lottery so it makes no difference where you live. I don't know the schools in other directions from Sydenham Girls.
  14. Will your 1 year old start Reeception while your older child is in Yr 6, or the year after? I would echo the point that you need to consider secondary schools. Have children from Ashbourne been admitted to Charter in the current application round? Do you know what schools you would prefer for your Yr 4 child? Harris Boys is very oversubscribed and a small catchment, Charter the same, Kingsdale operates a lottery. You may be best to look in a secure location for a secondary school.
  15. Is that Mr Bignell in his white coat? Why on earth would a coalman wear a white coat? Aha - Persil advert. Have a sugar lump, Buster.
  16. The Brockley Rock will be my next fish and chips stop! Thanks for the heads up. We've sometimes been over to herne Hill to Ollies, but nice to try a new place.
  17. It is standard protocol that exam procedure investigations remain confidential - the JCQ require this. In the year the KD questions were riased the JCQ issued penalties to 106 examining centres, none of which were made public. Parents of happy succesful children at KD are of course somewhat protective of confidentiality because the public fuss may throw suspicion on qualifications from the school, hardly fair on hardworking children once any investigation has sorted out any system errors. This is one reason why JCQ investigations are confidential. It may well be that the somewhat forceful style of the Head has prompted some (ex) teachers to attempt whistleblowing that has backfired not on the Head, but on innocent parties: hard working and dedicated teachers and their pupils. The Ofsted inspection is a good thing - the things KD is valued for have been recognised as good and valid, while continued scrutiny will ensure that any problems are ironed out. Will they just please sort out their admissions information, I am tearing my hair out before entering the fray next year.
  18. MGolden - thank you for the KD scholarship explanation, that must be what has happened. They have been allocated a school which is generally thought of as a 6th choice, but are being objective an realising that actually there is the potential for their child to do very well there.
  19. My friend was told that her child had been offered a full sports scholarship for KD, but has now not been offered a place. They have been offered a place at a lower choice school. How can this happen?
  20. Yes, significant minority, serious and substantial, criticisms and concerns. It was still fatuous to suggest that the school would be instantly plunged into special measures. Since it is a school which children do well in and parents are happy with the governors will hopefully now deal with any issues outstanding. Are interviews between staff and Ofsted in confidence and reported anonymously? Will the school have been told of the nature of the 'criticisms and concerns'?
  21. Shocking that so many ED families have had such bad news, and symptomatic of the problem with availability and choice in Southwark. Accepting the place offered will not affect your chances of a waiting list place at one of your higher choices. MGolden's comment is incorrect. Accept the place offered Make sure you are on the waiting list for every school higher up your list, it is worth double checking that you are on these lists Find out where you are on that list, there will be lots of movement over the next few months Prepare your appeal if you have grounds. You can be on the waiting list and appeal, and you can stay on the waiting list even if your appeal fails.
  22. heber jumble queen, that is terrible. How can they allocate twins different schools? I hope that you will win an appeal. Surely the sibling rule should apply as soon as one child is allocated a place. Harris Boys must be very over subscribed if only one of yours got in. Good luck. I think there is some special agency that advises parents of twins on schools appeals, but I cannot remember it's name.
  23. re the proposed Steiner school - we haven't asked the OP what the admission criteria would be. It could be that they would prioritise Steiner educated children as a secondary follow on for the Streatham school and Steiner educated children from far and wide, in which case the area is left with yet another school which does not use locality / distance as a criteria, and so does not address shortage of places. On the other hand if it is open to all comers on distance, some people assertively opposed to Steiner could find it is the nearest catchment school and yet again they have no other realistic choice. Both scenarios would be scandalous in my opinion. OP: Where is the proposed site? Why have you picked ED as a possible location and to meet what need or demand? What would the entrance criteria be?
  24. "Does anybody know if it is legal to kick people out of a gig if they are disturbing other people and don't respond to being asked to be quiet?" As I understand it if it is licensed premises and you are the licence holder then you can eject anyone you like for any reason you like. Good to hear they are not local. I don't recognise boorish behaviour as a common ED feature, even by XC90 or Porsche drivers ;-)
  25. It's not a solution to the lack of school places if the only new capacity is a school system that many parents would avoid and see as an even less attractive option than single sex, religious, or whatever. My perception is that a Steiner school would suit some children very well, especially those whose parents understand and support the ethos, but the reality would be that many would be in there just because it was the only place available, so no 'choice' at all. James Barber's post is a rallying cry to the parents of ED to found a parent led decent co-ed school, open to all. The parents of Lambeth did it and now have the excellent Elmgreen - although that is a community school.
