  1. Sorry Bilksy, I dont seem to have got your earlier messages. The Remi Rough tagging has now gone. Im on the case with the Conor Harrington fighting men. Maybe in a week it should be cleaned up. It is me who organises the de-tagging, Nigello who lets me know about it, James Barber who gives advice and POW who actually does it! :-)
  2. There are a huge number of film clubs in the local area. You can find them all listed and what they are showing on the South East London Film Club Network - https://selondonfilmclubs.wordpress.com/
  3. Well, I don't know what has happened since the last message on this thread - The Bigger Picture's next film, 'X+Y'- showing tomorrow night, has sold more tickets than we have since the EDPH opened! Was it this conversation that alerted it to people? Is it the choice of film? Is it that spring is coming? We are over the moon! There are still some tickets available. Details: X+Y (2014) 12A 111 min Director Morgan Matthews, with Asa Butterfield, Rafe Spall, Sally Hawkins A socially awkward teenage maths prodigy finds new confidence and new friendships when he lands a spot on the British squad at the International Mathematics Olympiad. Thursday 18 February at the East Dulwich Tavern - upstairs bar opens for food and drink at 7pm, film starts 8pm Here is more info about all our forthcoming films: http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk Here is where to get tickets online: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/336179

What do you mean by 'upping its game'? Choice of films (popular for 10 years)? atmosphere (look at our Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thebiggerpic/?ref=hl and see. Perhaps you dont like informality) ? added extras (we have far more than the EDPH - a free bowling alley and white Russians at The Big Labowski in November) ? price (?7, half the EDPG about)? Tell us how we can up our game, ideas very welcome. Better still, come and help us do it. We are a very friendly group. Many thanks.

Yes, I set up the original Dulwich film club, GalleryFilm (the film club of the Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery) in 2005. It is still going 10 years later, although not run by me for the last 3 years, when we set up TBP. Both have been popular and co existed happily together. TBP mostly has visiting speakers - a film journalist who had interviewed Nina Hoss on Thursday (Phoenix), a professional drummer for Whiplash, and others... There is food and drink and candles and sofas... 'club advantages' I think. But struggling after 10 years of success, at the exact time a commercial cinema opens up the road, is too much of a coincidence, but what to do?

But Films is a new one on me.. > > DulwichFox There is always an A4 poster promoting the film and saying in big red capitals 'TICKETS SOLD HERE' from about 3 weeks before every film (so the next one is going up soon). Its on the notice board to the right of the bar. We put these posters in the toilets (I rely on the barmen to put up the ones in the male toilet), they write the info in chalk on their A frame black board for about a week before each film, and on the night they erect a huge entrance sign to the outside entrance to the upstairs. We print postcards with the next 6 films and distribute them locally as much as we can. We try so hard!

Thanks for this LondonMix. We do post our films every month on the What's On section of EDF, but had never heard of the proposed Dulwich Diverter. Jut checked it out and contributed to its KickStarter. I will definitely see if it is interested in a general article. Have you heard of Dulwich OnView? http://dulwichonview.org.uk/ We put up 2 general articles there last week, http://dulwichonview.org.uk/2016/01/20/the-bigger-picture-film-club-is-about-as-perfect-as-you-could-get/ http://dulwichonview.org.uk/2016/01/19/south-east-london-film-clubs-website/ and I think it made a difference to our audience figures, which were up. So happy about that.
  8. We have a full page in every SE magazine, a quarter in Peckham Peculiar, in the Inter School Advertiser, on Herne Hill and this forum, posters in 5 places (including the ED Picturehouse!) and cards in loads of shops. I agree there should be room for both, but have come to KidKruger's conclusion that its a function of how much free time people have. Anyway, it would be fantastic if some of you could come along tonight. If you would like to be on our monthly emailing list, telling you the next film, please send me a private message with your email address and I will add you. Thanks so much.
  9. The Bigger Picture Film Club http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ , based at the EDT http://eastdulwichtavern.com/, has seen audiences cut in half since the arrival of the ED Picturehouse. This is so sad, like people flocking to a new supermarket chain rather than supporting the local independent shops. East Dulwich is pretty good at keeping going to independent shops, it would be wonderful if they checked what was on at The Bigger Picture before automatically looking at the Picturehouse website. In a recent article on MostlyFilm The Bigger Picture Film Club has been described as 'about as perfect as you could get'http://mostlyfilm.com/2016/01/18/the-pictures-get-bigger/ Also repeated on Dulwich OnView http://dulwichonview.org.uk/2016/01/20/the-bigger-picture-film-club-is-about-as-perfect-as-you-could-get/ Its quite disheartening for the volunteers... I know because I am one. For example, on Thursday, TBP is showing the German film Phoenix, with Nina Hoss, an extraordinary film, introduced by an expert in the industry, tickets ?7 with all profits going to local charities. It would be fantastic if you come along and check it out!

Sadly The Bigger Picture and other local film clubs have suffered from the arrival of the ED Picturehouse. The audiences have halved as people go to the film supermarket rather than support the local independent outlets. In an independent article, The Bigger Picture film club has been described as 'about as perfect as you could get'. See http://mostlyfilm.com/2016/01/18/the-pictures-get-bigger/ and here: http://dulwichonview.org.uk/2016/01/20/the-bigger-picture-film-club-is-about-as-perfect-as-you-could-get/ and that reminds me, sign up to the weekly reminder emails for the articles on Dulwich OnView, a community blog that has lots of contributors and is a mine of information about what is going on in the Dulwich area. These are quality articles inviting comments, so completely different and a complement to the EDF.
  11. Thanks Nigello for letting me know about the vandalism. Thanks to your message I painted over all of the tags about a week ago now. I really appreciate people letting me know, as I dont go round checking the murals in a regular way, and the tags so spoil the artworks.
  12. Great, thanks to know this. So about double the price of the other film clubs in the area. KirstyH Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The tickets are ?15 or ?13.50 concession.
  13. Goodness there are a lot of films showing in Dulwich in November! The Bigger Picture http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/, Dulwich's local film club is combining a screening of The Big Labowski with a free bowing alley, a free White Russian, themed food and drink, a raffle, voluntary dressing gowns.... an amazing event, all for ?9. Its above the East Dulwich Tavern, 1 Lordship Lane. Lovely comfy sofas! The Bigger Picture has been going for nearly 4 years and is run by local volunteers all keen to offer an alternative to mainstream cinema and raise money for local charities. Only last month we gave ?500 to Art in the Park. Local businesses are keen to be associated with us, offering free raffle prizes at every screening. https://www.facebook.com/thebiggerpic/ And on 19 November we are screening Whiplash - the drumming extravaganza, with the drummer from Katrina and the Waves (Walking on Sunshine) coming to answer questions and give tips! Tickets ?7. Hattie, how much are your tickets? Its hard to find this on your website.

I attach an image of the wall and painting side by side. Compare them and you will be able to see the connection. Lady Digby died in suspicious circumstances, illustrated by the beautiful young rose torn apart on her bed. Van Dyck copied her accurately but added that rose as a symbol of the destruction of love and beauty. MadC picked up on that symbolism and painted only the rose realistically. It means more when you know this stuff. Im trying to sort out some sort of little notice to have on the wall showing the original Van Dyck.

And why do it?? Unlike works of art in museums, street art is not guarded or protected. There is a wonderful trust in that and its everybody's art. Grrrr. I may be able to get the artist to do something about it...

Can you see the links between the wall and the painting? The perfectly represented all significant rose while the rest is abstracted on the wall.
  17. Im sorry, you will have to remind me about it and refer to any correspondence we have had. Im a bit snowed under and it has escaped under the wire.

Its explained in the thread here http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1576213,1576213#msg-1576213 It means much more when you know the picture it is based on, see attached image. The old one is of Lady Venetia Digby by Van Dyck, painted in 1633.

  20. Yes of course. Find a suitable wall (very visible and not on a listed building), make sure the owner doesnt mind, and I will organise. 21. Phlegm is painting a wall now, its 155 London Road, Herne Hill. Its right opposite the large entrance to Brockwell Park and that big traffic intersection. He is going far faster than I expected and will probably finish it today. If you want to pop down and speak to him, go this afternoon if possible.
  22. I will let you and others know when it is all completely confirmed and a date arranged for Phlegm to start.
  23. Thank you everyone who has offered walls, all 8 of you! I am so pleased that it seems so popular. So I now have a suitable wall for Phlegm, but if anyone would still like a mural by another artist, please get in touch.
  24. KestonKid Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > How much would we have to cough up for that? no one pays anything for these murals unless. The pubs have all given free food and drink to the artists while they are painting and sometimes paid for the paint. Dulwich Outdoor Gallery funds it all.
