  1. Mural in Grove Vale - Girl at a Window by System and Remi Rough

I got a straight 'no'. I think the Dulwich estates might be difficult too. There are a couple of ones by Stik painted last year in Court Lane which they haven't spotted. There will be another mural on the bowling building in Dulwich Park, by Thierry Noir, and one on the back of the tennis practice wall in Belair park (both offered by Southwark council) by MadC. These are being painted on 11/12 May.
  3. Since there is discussion on Street Art on this thread, you may be interested to know that there will be a debate on Street Art as part of Baroque the Streets and the Dulwich Festival on Sunday 12 May upstairs at the EDT at 7.30pm. There are 2 street artists involved, MadC http://madc.tv/ , the only woman in this project, and Shok-1 http://www.flickr.com/photos/shok-1/, and also Garry Hunter, curator and author of 'Street Art From Around the World' http://www.amazon.com/Street-Art-From-Around-World/dp/1848585403/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_0 You can get tickets here. http://www.dulwichfestival.co.uk/node/757

It will be done by Phlegm https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=phlegm+artist&rlz=1C1SKPL_enGB416GB416&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=YgmGUfaFKOmg0QXNtICYDw&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1680&bih=909 on 10/11 May. The condition I was given was that the landlord's 9 year old son could help! Phlegm is fine with this.
  5. Another Baroque the Streets wall is going up on Sunday/Monday. Its on the big 'white' wall in Vale End, opposite East Dulwich Station. It will be painted by Remi Rough and System and is based on 'Girl at a Window' by Rembrandt and 'Triumph of David' by Poussin, both in Dulwich Picture Gallery.
  6. There is another mural going up now on the side of the Paxton pub in Gypsy Hill. The artists is Reka, from Australia.
  7. Yes, he is Conor Harrington. http://conorsaysboom.wordpress.com/ He is the first artist to paint in the Dulwich Street Art Festival. Reka starts tomorrow, painting the Paxton pub at the bottom of Gypsy Hill.
  8. Have any of you seen what is going on at 265 Lordship Lane? The whole house (which is up for demolition) has been taken over by artists and is being painted inside and out. This is part of the upcoming street art festival which runs parallel to the Dulwich Festival in May. There will be a big opening party on 17 May but there is a lot to see before then.
  9. OK. So last year I made friends with Stik and we had this idea that he paint walls around Dulwich Picture Gallery with his versions of some of the DPG permanent collection. We got permission and pretty much everyone was happy (I realise you cant please everyone, especially where art is concerned). We ran a couple of walks during last year's Dulwich Festival which sold out http://dulwichonview.org.uk/2012/06/05/stik-art-walk-dulwich-festival-street-art-in-the-heart-of-surburbia/ and we found ourselves introducing about 100 new people to Dulwich Picture Gallery, as these walks attracted mainly Stik followers rather than locals. DPG is always wanting to attract a younger more diverse audience, and this helped. So this year I teamed up with the guy who runs Street Art London, http://streetartlondon.co.uk/ as he knows lots of street artists and we are continuing the idea but with different artists and interpretations of DPG works. We have about 7 confirmed artists now and are chasing more. Most of the painting is happening during the Dulwich Festival and we are running associated events - a workshop at Dog Kennel Hill adventure playground, a debate at the EDT, more walks, a party,- so it is in essence a street art festival within the Dulwich Festival. If you want to know more about me and why I am doing this, and you have 15 minutes to spare, take a look at this short film made last year with Stik. I think the idea is unique. We are creating a contemporary version of Dulwich Picture Gallery in its locality. So an outdoor, free, 24/7 version of the oldest public art gallery in England. I told Culture 24 (the national online data base of museums) and they loved the idea and said I can register 'Dulwich Street Art Gallery' as an official national museum. News of this will be out soon, I just want to nail a few more artists. But since you asked.... I really, really hope that local people like this. All public art is imposed on communities, but at least this street art costs people (except me!) nothing, and as councils are now selling their art works, perhaps this sort of thing will replace them.
  10. Graf/Street art has become much more mainstream now. Southwark Council has offered us 2 walls! I really hope people like what is planned.
  11. No, Stik isn't going to do the Goodrich/Barry Road wall, an artist called Phlegm is. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=phlegm+street+artist+images&hl=en&rlz=1C1SKPL_enGB416GB416&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=4vRFUfqHEcWsPafMgdgF&sqi=2&ved=0CC0QsAQ&biw=1680&bih=935 He did some of the Bussey Building along with Roa. Those black and white imaginary spidery people. Hope you like him better than Stik, Annette! The landlady is delighted with this and her son more so as Phlegm has agreed to let him help. This is all part of the Dulwich Street Art Festival in May. And Stik wont be participating as he agrees Dulwich has probably had enough of him!
  12. There are plans to paint that wall. There is a street art festival happening during the Dulwich Festival in May when lots of walls around Dulwich will be painted by well known street artists. Its very likely that Conor Harrington will be painting Spurling Road. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=conor+harrington&hl=en&rlz=1C1SKPL_enGB416GB416&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=2K5EUdO5L4z74QSgoYHYDg&ved=0CEUQsAQ&biw=1680&bih=935 He is fantastically skilled and very sought after. He will be basing his mural on a painting from Dulwich Picture Gallery, like Stik did last year.
  13. The Stik piece opposite the carpet shop is based on a picture by Gainsborough at Dulwich Picture Gallery - An Unknown Couple in a Landscape. http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/images/paintings/dpg/large/lse_dpg_dpg588_large.jpg He deliberately subdued his colours to match the painting and blend better with Dulwich. And if you saw him painting it last year he spent ages chatting with everyone who was passing by including our local policeman.
  14. The next film at the EDT is on Thursday - its Moon directed by David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones. More info here http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/#/moon/4571279713 Still tickets available online or at the EDT bar.
  15. The Bigger Picture Film Club http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ is screening RED SORGHUM on Wednesday upstairs at the EDT. It would be great if any of you could come along! It is based on the novel Red Sorghum Clan by Nobel laureate Mo Yan. In 1920?s China a girl is ravished en route to an arranged marriage with an elderly, leprous winemaker. He mysteriously dies, and her ravisher eventually lives with her so that together they may make the red sorghum wine. The tone shifts from light to dark, humour to horror and sacrifice with the arrival of Japanese forces. Zhang fills the screen with rich, sensuous images and uses actors, music and colour in a deeply expressive way. The stuff of legend - a subversive tribute to the vitality and endurance of Chinese peasant culture. 7pm Bar/themed snacks; 7.50 Introduction; 8pm Film Free raffle prizes courtesy of Rye Books, Push Studios Tickets ?7 in person from EDT, Lordship Lane; or online from WeGotTickets http://www.wegottickets.com/event/197861 or on the door.
  16. Thanks for this input Dan. Have you been to any of our screenings? There are big comfy sofas with lots of leg room but not enough for everyone. The experienced ones are coming early to bag them. There are ordinary chairs (with cushions) that you can move around for comfort. There are small tables with candles everywhere so you can eat and drink during the performance as well as before and afterwards. Our tickets are ?7 and we give our profits to local charities which people like to know. Perhaps we should search for more sofas. We found one free one and the EDT were happy to accept it. We have learned about having too many people and have cut our max down from 70 to 50. Keep the suggestions coming, thanks!
  17. Well keep an eye out for what we have planned for the next 6 months. There are fliers all over East Dulwich, always some in the EDT and you can buy tickets there and through our website. The next film is Red Sorghum on 20 Feb. http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/#/red-sorghum/4560557487
  18. Thanks for the comments Jeremy. If you went to films at the EDT in the last 9 months, it is the same group - The Bigger Picture. And we have been sold out on many occasions since we started in May 2012. Perhaps American Beauty is a bad choice. Our others are less well known and more idiosyncratic. http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ We are always open to suggestions. After all we want to put on what people want to see!
  19. It would be fantastic if you lot in this conversation were to come along to our little film club upstairs at the EDT. We havent sold many tickets for this evening. Its so dispiriting when people say they want a local cinema in East Dulwich and then don't come to ours! What can we do to attract you? We put in so much work!
  20. Peckham Plex is great for all the reasons mentioned but they dont show arty films or old or niche films. And there IS a film CLUB in pretty much every postcode. To find out what they are all showing and when, there is one website, South East London Film Club Network that is worth checking out when you fancy a film. 24 film clubs in SE London have got together to promote themselves on one website. http://selondonfilmclubs.wordpress.com/ They are all in very different and quirky venues. Nice to shop local before going off to the supermarket.
  21. Of course, but this was just to let you know of the East Dulwich film club and the events that it runs, in case you might be interested in that too!
  22. The cinema upstairs at the EDT has a huge 5m screen. The atmosphere is informal, you can eat and drink before, during and after the film, sit in comfy sofas... Check out the photos on their facebook: http://www.facebook.com/thebiggerpic Come along on Thursday and check it out.
  23. On Thursday 17 January THE BIGGER PICTURE FILM CLUB http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ is showing AMERICAN BEAUTY upstairs at the EDT. Come along an hear the soundtrack! In addition The Bigger Picture film club gives its profits to local charities. On Thursday EBONY HORSE CLUB in Brixton http://www.ebonyhorseclub.org.uk/ will receive ?200. 24. This coming Thursday, 17 January THE BIGGER PICTURE FILM CLUB http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ is showing AMERICAN BEAUTY upstairs at the EDT directed by Sam Mendes and starring Kevin Spacey. A middle aged office drone finds himself besotted with his daughter?s teenage friend and sets about reinvigorating his life. An incisive, deliriously funny and profound vision of the American Dream hitting meltdown. ?Intelligent, exhilarating, effervescent film-making? Guardian The Bigger Picture gives its profits to local charities. On Thursday EBONY HORSE CLUB in Brixton http://www.ebonyhorseclub.org.uk/ will receive ?200. A rep will be at the screening to say a few words about this extraordinary charity. 7pm bar/themed snacks 7.50 introduction 8pm film Free raffle prizes courtesy of Rye Books and Push Studios Tickets ?7 in person from Push Studios, Blackwater Street; Rye Books, Upland Rd; Locale Restaurant, East Dulwich Rd; EDT, Lordship Lane or online from WeGotTickets http://www.wegottickets.com/event/197858 Upstairs at East Dulwich Tavern, 1 Lordship Lane, SE22 Future films, all screened at the EDT: http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ Go along, they are great evenings!
