  2. There IS a cinema in East Dulwich, or at any rate a monthly film club upstairs at the EDT. Its called The Bigger Picture http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ and there is a bar, themed EDT snacks, often a speaker and live music before the film. Great atmosphere. The next film they are showing is 'Basquiat' this coming Thursday 20th Its about the 1980s New York street artist who became the prodigy of Andy Warhol (played by David Bowie). The London street artist Stik (who has decorated some ED walls) will be there to talk about street art today. The other films planned until Christmas are on their website. http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ They are just deciding which films to show next year, all suggestions welcome, and help with running the film club welcome too! Fleurdelys the film critic?
  3. Interesting comment, Hannah. The figures on your school wall were in fact designed by some of your students. All Stik did was to enlarge them to a suitable size for the wall, painting in the outlines, and then he taught those same students to use spray cans to complete the mural. Do you know why the mural is unpopular? What would people prefer?
  4. I know Roa's work and think its great. I could ask the landlord what he thought. Might wait a few days to see if anyone has any other suggestions.
  5. Interestingly I approached the landlord of the building earlier in the summer as I thought the same as you, and he was very pleased to have some street art on the wall. I sent him a selection of artists willing to paint it, and he chose Stik! But Stik thinks that Dulwich must be sick of him by now and is reluctant to paint that wall. So that is as far as I have got. Perhaps track down some more street artists that may appeal to the landlord. Any ideas?
  6. Which piece do you look out on? Would it help if you knew about the original in Dulwich Picture Gallery that it is based on? I would be happy to show it to you and explain the connections. Sorry if you know all about this already. Stik's work does not appeal to everyone as does the work of any artist.
  7. Stik had to get permission from Southwark council to paint a wall in Dulwich Park. He got it very quickly and easily. Southwark council obviously draw a distinction between graffiti and street art or murals which they consider Stik's work to be. A 15 minute film has been made of Stik's work in Dulwich and its link to Dulwich Picture Gallery. It is being shown for the first time upstairs at the EDT on 20 Sept at The Bigger Picture Film Club's September screening. More info here http://www.thebiggerpic.co.uk/ Stik will be there if you want to meet him.
  8. Who owns the wall in Spurling Road? Perhaps they can be persuaded to have some 'proper' graffiti reinstated?

Here is where the Stik paintings are: Hansler Road on Property In opposite Lordship Lane Carpets Blackwater Court, off Blackwater Street, on Push Studios Blackwater Street on the side of Mrs Robinsons shop. Beauval Road, 'The Moorings' at junction with Townley Road 150 Court Lane 184 Court Lane Dulwich Park - on the building next to the bowling green, opposite the playground. Some of the walls have laminated postcards of the originals in Dulwich Picture Gallery near them, but I haven't got around to putting them up on all of the walls. Perhaps I shouldn't and people would prefer to guess? Another suggestion is to put up QR codes with the URL of the picture's entry on the DPG website. There is a great piece by Remi Rough on Crawthew Grove and Lordship Lane and there is the whole Goose Green saga of Blake's Vision of Angels painted by Stan Peskett. Read about it here. Anyone know of any more?
  10. Here is a nice blog post from someone who understands what it is all about. http://givemecool.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/stik-art-walk-dulwich-festival-street.html
  11. There are 2 in Court Lane, 184 and 150. There is one in Blackwater Street and one in Blackwater Court (Push Studios) and one in Dulwich Park opposite the children's playground on the bowling building (Murillo's 3 boys).
  12. You can get tickets for the walk today on the 'door' if you turn up at 2.15 at Blackwater Court. Stik and the walk will be at Dulwich Picture Gallery by about 4.15/4.30 where he will be signing any postcards of his Dulwich pieces you may have bought from the shop.

It has been a hard slog to get the 8 pieces up for the Dulwich Festival walks and to persuade Dulwich Picture Gallery of their worth. The DPG shop is now selling postcards of Stik's Dulwich pieces which is praise indeed.
  14. DULWICH FESTIVAL STREET ART WALK - SUNDAY 20 MAY @ 2.30 Stik and Ingrid are taking a walk by Stik's recent street art works on Sunday 20 May beginning at 'The Guardian Angel' at Push Studios, Blackwater Court, Blackwater Street, and ending at Dulwich Picture Gallery where you will be able to see the inspiration for his works. They will be talking about the meeting of street art and classical art on the walls of Dulwich. Come and meet the artist. Tickets (?4/2)on the Dulwich Festival website. Tickets include free entrance to Dulwich Picture Gallery.
  15. The Hamlet kids just loved Stik and helped him with his painting in Dulwich Park this afternoon. Their teacher said they were privileged to have the opportunity of working with such a popular street artist. The Dulwich Picture Gallery has sent out a press release about how delighted they are with Stik's renditions of the classical works in their collection. No, this is not graffiti as many people understand it, it is art in the streets. It is free for everyone to enjoy and open 24 hours a day.
  16. Stik will be painting a wall in Dulwich Park today. The end wall of the building next to the bowling green, opposite the children's playground. A class from the Hamlet school is coming to watch and possibly participate between 2 and 3 if its not pouring with rain. It was surprisingly easy to get permission for this, even Southwark council loves Stik's work!
  17. Try looking at Stik's work really carefully. It is hugely admired and beloved. See below. And he has permission to do these pieces! Extracts from an email I have just received from an academic in Human Geography - research specialty - cultural geography with reference to Urban Art and urban interventions. I am a great admirer of Stik's work. In all the time I was researching urban art practices in Paris I had never felt as personally moved by their creativity as I am by Stik's work. It is extraordinary how his Stik People capture our imaginations, emotions, the unconscious. His Stik People are far from simple, they manifest complexity in themselves, their viewers and in passers by. My staff and students have virtually adopted Stik's People on the wall behind St Giles-In-The-Fields church in Bloomsbury. I am almost certain that Stik is not familiar with the history of this church in terms of the London poor including some horrifying images of nineteenth century poverty in that place. His three Stik People on the wall could almost be a continuation of that history. Two of them gaze down at the pond beneath their feet as if looking for a lost soul although every time we visit there our interpretation changes and we are caught up in multiple narratives! Stik's work is both moving and powerful and meeting him is an absolute privilege. She is bringing some students down to see his work next week.

I'm no expert, but I suspect the > inspiration was The Linley Sisters by Thomas > Gainsborough. I could be wrong. You are not wrong. Have you seen his walls outside Push Studios? That is based on a more obscure one.
  19. come and talk to him this afternoon in Court Lane. He has just been asked to do stuff in Forest Hill. Stik comes South!
  20. Stik will be painting on the wall of 184 Court Lane later this afternoon, and perhaps, if it is dry enough, on 150 Court Lane too. If you come by between 3 and 5 you can catch the Court Lane plant sale/swap outside 142. Neat combination of events, typifies the area.
  21. Have you noticed a couple of stik people outside Push Studios and some fetching blue on the Blackwater Street side of Mrs Robinsons? The well known (in East London) graffiti artist Stik is painting 6 sites for the Dulwich Festival! His compositions are inspired by some of the old master paintings in Dulwich Picture Gallery, and he has adapted his palette accordingly. Evening Standard article about Stik
  22. Sounds like a good idea. Janet Coy is acting chair, see my yesterday's message. She is the obvious person to approach.
  23. What was that story on Dulwich OnView? I think Janet Coy (acting Chair of EDS)is coming to the Dulwich OnView party happening at Dulwich Picture Gallery this Sunday (3-6pm). You could come along to the event (free, music, dance, tea/wine/cakes), have a great afternoon, and find out all you want to know about the EDS at the same time. (shameless plug for the party!)
  24. this is interesting, thanks for alerting me to the thread. I will link to it when I put up the AGM info on Dulwich OnView, as I cant find anything else about the EDS on the web.
