to clarify - by "invalidate" I don't mean she can't have or shouldn't express that opinion But it does diminish it's value when she is quite so judgemental
-
Marie81's viewpoint was diminished by her extreme judgemental attictude to other people - she not only said they shouldn't be doing it but that those people had actual problems So based on that, people are (rightly IMO) intolerant of what else she has to say, and it is that which invalidates her opinion

Wearing Poppies - A serious question
StraferJack replied to BB100's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I thought this letter from a number of war veterans last year sums up how many people feel about the current state of play -

colville - you seemingly lack the intelligence to appreciate sarcasm and irony employed by penguin and therefore you should be ashamed of yourself I have expressed my own opposition to the CPZ several times - do keep up I am not a member of any party, or an elected member of anything. I do historically tend to vote labour tho -

"those who support this proposal may well to so for whatever reasons they want, those who proposed it have a political agenda - which is why they were elected in the first place -" I really don't think that's true. A political agenda isn't an abstract concept - it's an expression of competing demands and an attempt to find a path that is the least problematic. Even if this was a top-down, revenue-raising policy cooked up by the council, it's only going to see them kicked out IF it's as unpopular as some people claim it will be. The fact is that enough people have said they want to see it for the council to go through this process. So the process isn't perfect, (it would be more expensive if it was more comprehensive) and blah blah blah. But it is still the wishes of enough people affected by a perceived problem and with this as a perceived solution (and you and I agree that it is the wrong one) Not EVERYTHING can ever be laid out in an agenda and voted on every 4 years. But here is where we are now and people are voicing their opinions. Some more truculently than others. But people are seeing foul play where I don't believe there is As -

that's a wilfully emotive phrase if you don't mind me saying, Penguin Not even I am "ideologically opposed to private care ownership" - but any intelligent being can look at the amount of available space, and the numbers of people wanting a car and see that the two don't even come close, so alternatives, including encouraging people to not use a car, must be explored Or do you feel that there is no limit to how many cars can fit into London? -

And nor did he get into trouble with his employer, he got it from some viewers he merely pointed out that it's only recently that wearing them outside Remembrance Sunday (when he himself wears one) has become ubiquitous, and an inflation has set in. because of that inflation he was accused of "dishonouring the dead" which is pretty fatuous and an example of why some people bristle around the poppy Some Irish people (not all) also dislike the link with the British legion and their link with Unionist groups -

I'm pretty sure Snow is more than a spokesperson - otherwise C4 would have sorted out those ties years ago -

MM 1) good question - I think I stuck with "young" after they had been brought up by other people in reference to the school. But your point stands - the question is equally applicable to all 2) It's possible to do both simultaneously, but it's also possible to be hypocritical about it. The point of remembering the suffering should surely be to try and avoid it where possible, which leads to ... 3) We'll have to disagree on much of this 4) I'm not sure I am, but I'll try and avoid doing it again if I have -

you remember how much flak Jon Snow took for not wearing a poppy last year? You don't need to be a petty child to be uncomfortable with that -

what do we think young people feel about the apparent disparity between what the poppy signifies, and politicians wearing them whilst responsible for participation in arguably unnecessary wars ? -
and then decide which of the 3 CPZ threads you should now post in without it getting overlooked by the other threads
-
if it happens to be the last post on teh thread then clicking on the last posters name takes you to that post, with the corresponding URL If that moment has passed, but you can remember a particular phrase unique to the post in question, do a search for that

Halal and Kosher Meat, your thoughts
StraferJack replied to Thomas Micklewright's topic in The Lounge
or, he might just be a vegetarian, H personally, in this instance I'm more inclined to agree with you (Hugenot) about "our Tom", but man, do you ever overstate your case sometimes. (some of my best friends are vegetarians etc etc) I'm not sure I agree that halal is inherently THAT much worse than many "modern" abbatoir practices, but given that many meat eaters couldn't give two hoots how an animan is kept when alive, to give out about how they are killed seems moot I know many other strive to ensure animals aren't abused when alive and killed as humanely as possible as well - and that's as it should be IMO But any modern abbatoir < halal/kosher arguments don't sit well with me -
"i was out with my dog that night by lytcott grove where 2 police officers rode past me on mountain bikes and gave me the once over, then a bit further along the road i was given the evil eye by another 2 officers on foot...i wondered what was going on cos as a resident of melbourne grove its very rare to c 4 officers within the space of 2 minutes.....from the description given of the mugger its pretty obvious that i wasnt the person they were looking for as im white and 6 ft 4..but still they were lookin at me as if i was the person they were looking for....further down the road they had a yourh by the side of the road and were chatting happiliy, and let the youth go on his way..ALL I CAN SUGGEST IS GET A STAF LIKE I HAVE..IF ANYONE TRIES IT ON THEN HE BETTER BE BLOODY BRAVE.... " Not my words, but those of the op, likan.... Oh I see what they have done with their name there Anyway, he/she not averse to doing what he/she complains about. So I leave it to you to note the day and time of their post today and judge how "interesting" their own life is, before giving out about anyone else's

Bojangles / Sure&Firm / My Favourite Nursery
StraferJack replied to srisky's topic in The Family Room Discussion
As part of the "getting her ready for doing this alone" we had to spend time in with our daughter for a couple of days. So it was good to observe the staff dealing with the day to day stuff, and I was more than happy. Early days so I don't want to jinx anything but she seems very happy there and spends the whole journey home nattering away to me about her day I have no idea what she's talking about obviously but I can tell its all good. -
Bojangles / Sure&Firm / My Favourite Nursery
StraferJack replied to srisky's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Our 9 month started there a couple of weeks ago and is loving it so far Staff are friendly and very good at logging meals, activities and so on and when I've picked the little one up and spoken to the other parents they all seem happy. The kids I've met in there are all very well behaved too I think they have spaces because they are fairly new, on the site of an older nursery where people had problems, so some people might have reservations if they think they are connected. -
