Planning on taking our tent to Sandyballs for the early May bank holiday. Anyone been there recently? Is it fun? DD is three an a half. Also, has anyone camped there? We have to pitch the tent on a gravel pitch. I'm slightly concerned it might damage the tent, or be uncomfortable. Any thoughts?

Thread in main section about SAH ED Mum & Nick Clegg
Shaggy replied to Otta's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Could not agree with you more mrs tp. I was told by my employer "to not even ask for flexible working", which is illegal, I know. Clever flexible policies, such the ones gaby hinsliff describes in her book Half a Wife, would not be that onerous on companies. -
We have a Janod one. It is sturdy and has a paper roll. Bit pricey but is made where I grew up in France so I am quite partial to the brand...

We took our litte girl to see it last year. She loved it.

That's very helpful. Thanks. I think I'll leave at 7.30 to ensure I'm in for 8.45.

Thanks for that!

For various reasons I'm going to have to drive to work tomorrow morning. My TomTom (with traffic warnings) says it'll take about 35 mins to go from Dulwich Library to the Gherkin. Does that sound right? Sounds a bit short to me.

Help! 16 month old has leapt out of his cot
Shaggy replied to Ruby-shoes's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Put the grobag on back to front. That'll fox him for a while. Especially if it is one that zips at the front not the side and you make sure to zip it from bottom to top. Then when he has worked that out, inside out. That should sort you out for a couple of months. -
Childcare costs forcing you to give up work?
Shaggy replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Child care costs did not prevent me fom returning to work but definitely preventing me from having a second child. -
....and they can't specify that they want a female locum either.

Any experience of commuting to France for work ..........
Shaggy replied to tllm2's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If he is commuting, and therefore spending more than a negligible amount of time in the uk (I've forgotten the exact amount) he will be subject to UK tax, but won't be double taxed. I suggest getting an accountant to work it out so that you have somebody to sue if there is a stuff up. I suspect the Swiss franc element is because the euro isn't the most attractive currency in the world at the moment, what with default threats and suggestions that the the eurozone might get broken up. -
So many choices!

Great -- thanks!

My little 2 3/4 year-old monkey loves the pool at Centerparcs, I have just bought a car, and it looks like its going to be nasty weather this Easter. This adds up to one thing: Centreparcs being booked up and very expensive anyway, can anyone suggest a good fun pool to go to next week? Something with a pretend beach, waves, that sort of thing. Doesn't have to be in London. Am perfectly happy to drive for an hour or so to get there.

Guess so. P?t? is probably the only thing she's not tried yet.

Do you think it's safe to feed a two year old foie gras? It's not recommended for pregnant women, so maybe it shouldn't be given to the very young either. Any thoughts?

The ?2 million over a career debate is bit of a blind alley. But so too is the ?1.8 million figure. All we know is that the Gupta brothers' personal assets grew by ?1.8 million pounds at last year end (which ain't bad). As they own the company the money is theirs, but it's not in their own bank accounts. The brothers are joint managing directors. Presumably they take a salary for that, and presumably Dr Gupta takes a salary too for treating patients. In terms of whether ?1.8 million is a big profit or not: that question is simply meaningless. Many companies of that size will simply break even because the managing directors take the excess as salary. Others would prefer to keep cash in the business. So in short, the business is in a very healthy state and so is the financial position of the brothers. Even after paying themselves there is a couple of mil left over. They might be awarding themselves salaries of squillions of pounds or, like Steve Jobs, getting paid a dollar a year because they work for the love of it. However, as there is a couple of million quid sloshing about the coffers, if there are genuine patient complaints, then they can only be as a result of management as there isn't a funding shortage.

Anyone able to pick up Freeview HD channels?
Shaggy replied to Keats's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Actially, it depends where you are. The Lordship Lane end of Dunstans Road gets no signal whatsoever in parts as the hill the Ladlands Estate is on blocks out the Crystal Palace transmitter. Leeds or Hever Castle with a 21 Month old?
Shaggy replied to Indiana's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hever is the easiest and fastest to get to via public transport, as long as you don't mind a walk from the station. Best to take a sling unless you don't mind lugging a buggy over a couple of styles though. -
I'm going to leave it after this as its not really related to somebody's horrible work stress. You can't take notes in the public gallery. If you do the judge won't go mad but an usher will often stop you and exclude you from court. Some courts police this more thoroughly than others. At the Bailey they are assiduous. At Southwark Crown Court, where the press tend to use the public gallery, the officials assume that anybody with a notebook is a reporter and don't stop anybody. Journalists can take notes (they are working from within the well of the court, on the press bench,) and participants can takes notes. But there is no way people can "record" proceedings from the public gallery, either on a tape recorder on in a notebook. You say people can record "not very accurately." This is certainly not the case. As I said above, court reporters should have good shorthand. They are under an obligation to the court to ensure their story IS both fair and accurate. Being accurate is the reporter's problem, not the court's. So if a court reporter "records" proceedings "not very accurately" they could end up in trouble if their mistake is relevant or unfair. Defence lawyers are particularly good at highlighting what they call inaccurate reporting to get cases thrown out because of prejudicial reporting. And, many people don't know this, but the court artist isn't even allowed to draw in court. She can't even make preliminary sketches. She has to do her pictures from memory. When you sitting in the public gallery, you are there to SEE justice being done, not to RECORD justice being done. Going beyond this is likely to get you kicked out, although using a recording device or a camera will get you time if you are caught. Even the recent rule allowing tweeting from court (at the Judge's discretion, following an application from the media) is restricted to reporters. Huguenot Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It's a peculiar law - what's the justification? > > With a public gallery and the right to take notes, > it seems that you are allowed to 'record' what > takes place, just not very acccurately. > > Most strange.

Contempt of court isn't like being caught on the motorway doing 71. If a judge catches somebody recording proceedings (especially somebody who should know better,) the judge is likely to be more than a little annoyed and that person WILL get the book thrown at them and will get a prison sentence.
