  1. Hi All, Calling teachers, trainee teachers, or anybody who can help really. I'm planning on applying to become a primary school teacher under the Schools Direct programme. I had planned to take lots of holiday time out of work during 2014 to shadow teachers etc, and then apply in November 2014 for entry in 2015. However I've very recently discovered that I am going to be out of a job in March, so I am going to apply this November for entry in September 2014. The problem is that I haven't shadowed anybody yet, which strikes me as a bit of a problem in my application. Can anybody please help me out? If any teacher would allow me to spend a day shadowing them, that would be really really great. But also any help and advice about how to prepare for an application quickly, that I had planned on spending a year working on...... Gulp!
  2. Great -- thanks for that.
  3. Hi Everyone, My almost-four year old daughter has said that she wants to go to the cinema, which sounds fun, especially as I haven't been to the movies in about ten years. My question has 2 parts. First of all, Epic seems like the big movie at the moment. Has anyone seen it? Did the kids like it? Secondly, we are off to Bluewater tomorrow. The cinema there seems to be super delux with sofas and stuff like that. While I think I'd prefer somewhere like the Ritzy in Brixton (the sort of place we used to go to years ago) has anyone been to the Bluwater multiplex? Is it a good place for a first-time cinema goer, or is it going to freak her out?
  4. Thanks everyone. Sounds great. I will make sure to book the swimming. Really looking forward to it now!
  5. Planning on taking our tent to Sandyballs for the early May bank holiday. Anyone been there recently? Is it fun? DD is three an a half. Also, has anyone camped there? We have to pitch the tent on a gravel pitch. I'm slightly concerned it might damage the tent, or be uncomfortable. Any thoughts?
  6. Could not agree with you more mrs tp. I was told by my employer "to not even ask for flexible working", which is illegal, I know. Clever flexible policies, such the ones gaby hinsliff describes in her book Half a Wife, would not be that onerous on companies.
  7. We have a Janod one. It is sturdy and has a paper roll. Bit pricey but is made where I grew up in France so I am quite partial to the brand...
  8. We took our litte girl to see it last year. She loved it.
  9. That's very helpful. Thanks. I think I'll leave at 7.30 to ensure I'm in for 8.45.
  10. Thanks for that!
  11. For various reasons I'm going to have to drive to work tomorrow morning. My TomTom (with traffic warnings) says it'll take about 35 mins to go from Dulwich Library to the Gherkin. Does that sound right? Sounds a bit short to me.
  12. Could she have a sore throat perhaps?
  13. My little three-year-old has decided she is afraid of lobsters. Which is fine, as she doesn't tend to encounter lobsters too frequently.
  14. Put the grobag on back to front. That'll fox him for a while. Especially if it is one that zips at the front not the side and you make sure to zip it from bottom to top. Then when he has worked that out, inside out. That should sort you out for a couple of months.
  15. Child care costs did not prevent me fom returning to work but definitely preventing me from having a second child.
  16. ....and they can't specify that they want a female locum either.
  17. Thanks bemusED for your very informative post.
  18. If he is commuting, and therefore spending more than a negligible amount of time in the uk (I've forgotten the exact amount) he will be subject to UK tax, but won't be double taxed. I suggest getting an accountant to work it out so that you have somebody to sue if there is a stuff up. I suspect the Swiss franc element is because the euro isn't the most attractive currency in the world at the moment, what with default threats and suggestions that the the eurozone might get broken up.
  19. So many choices!
  20. Great -- thanks!
  21. My little 2 3/4 year-old monkey loves the pool at Centerparcs, I have just bought a car, and it looks like its going to be nasty weather this Easter. This adds up to one thing: Centreparcs being booked up and very expensive anyway, can anyone suggest a good fun pool to go to next week? Something with a pretend beach, waves, that sort of thing. Doesn't have to be in London. Am perfectly happy to drive for an hour or so to get there.
  22. Guess so. P?t? is probably the only thing she's not tried yet.
  23. Do you think it's safe to feed a two year old foie gras? It's not recommended for pregnant women, so maybe it shouldn't be given to the very young either. Any thoughts?
  24. The ?2 million over a career debate is bit of a blind alley. But so too is the ?1.8 million figure. All we know is that the Gupta brothers' personal assets grew by ?1.8 million pounds at last year end (which ain't bad). As they own the company the money is theirs, but it's not in their own bank accounts. The brothers are joint managing directors. Presumably they take a salary for that, and presumably Dr Gupta takes a salary too for treating patients. In terms of whether ?1.8 million is a big profit or not: that question is simply meaningless. Many companies of that size will simply break even because the managing directors take the excess as salary. Others would prefer to keep cash in the business. So in short, the business is in a very healthy state and so is the financial position of the brothers. Even after paying themselves there is a couple of mil left over. They might be awarding themselves salaries of squillions of pounds or, like Steve Jobs, getting paid a dollar a year because they work for the love of it. However, as there is a couple of million quid sloshing about the coffers, if there are genuine patient complaints, then they can only be as a result of management as there isn't a funding shortage.
  25. Actially, it depends where you are. The Lordship Lane end of Dunstans Road gets no signal whatsoever in parts as the hill the Ladlands Estate is on blocks out the Crystal Palace transmitter.
